Review: With this tasty four-tracker, Scruscru adds a new name to the Scruniversal roster, sometime DOBRO, Spinnin' and Dusty Editions contributor Selva. He hits the ground running with 'Get Up', a summery, thickset house jam crafted partially from samples of a hazy, horn-heavy old disco-soul gem, before successfully beefing up another Blaxploitation-era disco-funk jam on the similarly peak-time-ready 'Like That'. 'Good Ol' Days' is a deeper and crunchier - but no less sun-soaked - house jam that boasts some rather fine jazz guitar samples, while 'You Got It' loops up and dubs out a heavy funk workout, successfully re-imagining it as an MPC-driven disco-house looper.
Review: Some fine festive fare here from the fast-rising DOBRO imprint, who've used the season of goodwill as an excuse to deliver another fine, 16-rack compilation of previously unreleased material. Kicking off with the emotive, shuffling deep house loveliness of Buzz Compass's 'Hartbit', the collection gleefully skips between sample-rich disco-house (Mutenoise, Leiba, Hotmood), quirky Latin house (Babak, Kostenko Brothers), squelchy late-80s techno revivalism (SIRS and Lovebirds), nu-boogie (Scruscru with label boss Iner), wall-of-sound deep house positivity (Selva, the jaunty vintage late '80s 'garage-house' vibes of Sun Rhythms) and hazy, sunrise-ready wonder (Kerrinis and TonyZzz). Brilliantly programmed, it's a fine compilation of positive, ear-pleasing excellence.
Review: Two tracks here aimed fair and square at floors that like it on the Balearic/leftfield side. 'Floor Shakers' centres around a looped woodwind riff and distorted, indecipherable vocal sample, while crowd noise, shakers and brass stabs and other spoken snatches of vocal float in and out of the mix. The track doesn't go anywhere much, but just trying to decipher the many, densely layered sounds should keep the dancers happy for a while! 'The Move' is a more sedate, dusty affair reminiscent of the likes of Lemon Jelly or Bent, with tinkling ivories, a mournful sax going on in the background and the occasional ringing telephone.
