Shan

Since 2014, Frankfurt producer Shan has long been one of Germany's premier rave revivalists, with a trademark sound - best exemplified by his periodic outings on Running Back - that evokes mental images of turn-of-the-90s warehouse parties and smoke-filled basement bashes.

Review: Second time around for Victor Shan's Candi Staton-sporting 'One Day', which first surfaced - complete with Earth Trax and Litherland remixes - three years ago. This time round the track appears on legendary UK label Hooj Choons in reworked form, with the Frankfurter's original mix nowhere to be seen. That's not a criticism though, because the fresh reworks are undeniably impressive. The headline-grabbing revision (which comes accompanied by an edited version of the rework) comes from sometime Unknown To The Unknown contributor Third Son, who successfully re-imagines it as a super-summery slab of hands-aloft piano house perfection complete with breakbeat blasts and two spine-tingling breakdowns. LMajor provides the other revision, revelling in a piano-sporting, breakbeat-driven revision that recalls the glory days of breakbeat hardcore.

Review: Victor Shan has long been one of Germany's premier rave revivalists, with a trademark sound - best exemplified by his periodic outings on Running Back - that evokes mental images of turn-of-the-90s warehouse parties and smoke-filled basement bashes. His belated return to Gerd Janson's imprint once again pushes this sonic aesthetic to the fore, with the title referencing the Chicago venue of the same name that helped birth house music. It's full-throttle, hands-in-the-air music from the off, where stab-happy, breakbeat-powered stomper 'Abfahrt' is followed by the 'Apache'-sampling excitement of 'Strobe Light' and the surging, Italo-style arpeggiated bass of 'Volume Up'. The fun continues via the moody 'Textura', the lusciously loved-up 'R8000' and the classic Chicago house flex of 'Shifter'.

Review: Hesse native Victor Shan is next on local institution Live At Robert Johnson and if there's ever been a more poignant tribute to the clubbing institution and label - this is it right here. Taking his inspirations from disparate influences such as house, synthpop and balearic, Shan's LARJ debut 'Nordring 131' is named after the club's address in Offenbach. From the hypnotic classic house vibe of the title track which is awash in icy FM synthesis, the sublime ambient journey of "Meta", to the glassy-eyed and bittersweet Italo magic of "M1 Dreams". Finally, we hear him taking inspiration from the second Summer Of Love on the evocative "I Am For Real".

Review: Since 2014, Frankfurt producer Shan has offered up regular missives on Running Back, with each successive EP exploring different sonic territory to its predecessor whilst retaining a strong retro-futurist feel. His latest offering is undeniably eclectic in its dancefloor-focused approach, with Shan variously turning his hand to percussion-heavy jack tracks (the sweat-soaked heaviness of "Schlagzeug"), Italo-disco/80s Euro-house fusion (opener "Stuck 4"), Bobby Orlando-style Hi-NRG ("Valentino"), mix 1980s Shep Pettibone dubs of synth-pop cuts (the rather brilliant "Holzboden") and stylish, synth-laden cosmic disco wildness (EP closing throb-job "Video 83"). As you'd expect, there's a stripped-back authenticity to the sound and production that captures the raw energy and feel of the vintage music that inspired him (albeit with the kind of low-end weight associated with heavily compressed 21st century dance music).

Review: With the same certainty that the leaves will turn brown and fall from the trees, autumn sees the release of Toolroom's closing party album. It's the label's annual state of the (house) nation address and 2018 is no exception. While this year's edition contains a healthy smattering of feel good house - the most impressive exempts being the vocal grooves of Weiss' "Feel My Needs" and Illyus & Barrientos' "MEA" - there are also more adventurous variants on offer. These include Peggy Gou's tweaked acid take on Shakedown's "At Night", the chord heavy Dusky take on KiNK's "Perth" and the cut-up, abstract "Pale Blue Dot" by rising lo-fi house artist Ross From Friends, which demonstrate that this year, Toolroom is thinking outside the box.

Review: The choice of Tony Humphries to mix Running Back's first label compilation is a significant one. Getting his big break in the early '80s as an understudy for the legendary Shep Pettibone's Kiss FM show, Humphries went on to become one of the defining DJs of house music's formative years, with residencies at New Jersey's Club Zanzibar and London's Ministry of Sound. His previous mixes illustrate his continuing ability to bridge dance music's past and present and his new one for Gerd Janson's imprint will mark its fifteenth anniversary. It is a timely reminder of what has made the Frankfurt powerhouse remain on many favourite label lists for over a decade. It's a mix of golden oldies and recent classics alike: from Todd Terje's smash hit from several years ago "Ragysh" and the anthemic "The Voice From Planet Love" by Precious System, through to more recent bombs. Two by Running back alumnus Shan ("Bassline Party"/"Work It") and the legendary Mr G's Motor City ode "Ben & Gerd" (Killin It M Day).

Review: Ever since Gerd Janson snapped up his fine Chord Memories EP back in 2014, Shan has enjoyed a productive relationship with Running Back. City Never Sleeps marks the Frankfurt producer's third outing on the hyped house imprint, and boasts a quartet of retro-futurist treats. He doffs a cap to the melodious analogue deep house of the Burrell Brothers and Larry Heard on the delicious title track, before effortlessly emphasizing his own chunky, cymbal-heavy groove on the subtly acid-flecked "Lin FM". "Caiber" sees him sending shivers down the spine via warehouse-friendly piano riifs and boisterous house breakbeats, while closer "691 Beats" is a pulsating, bass-heavy drum workout with added rave riffs.
