Review: A music-maker since 1993, San Francisco native Shiny Objects is probably best known for his releases on Om Records, Roam Recordings and Rare Wiri. Here he returns to another label he regularly frequents, Strange Attractor, for the first time since April 2023. On 'Lights Down', the Bay Area producer subtly moves away from his trademark deep and techy house sound, delivering a slab of heady, effects-laden dub disco/nu-disco fusion of the sort that frequently emerged from San Fran during the late noughties. Fittingly, a survivor of that scene, Anthony Mansfield, provides the first of two remixes - an even sleazier, more low-slung take that's arguably even better than Shiny Objects' original mix. The producer's own pitched-down 'Shiny Cosmic Rub' - a dark disco chugger with mind-mangling noises aplenty - completes a fine package.

Review: Clocking it at just under 2.5 hours long, you certainly can't fault this Rare Wiri year-end label comp on the value for money front! With 23 tracks on offer there's no room here to go into them all individually, and you probably have a pretty good idea of the label's particular electronic, 80s-leaning flavour of nu-disco anyway. Suffice to say, then, that Rare Wiri's many existing fans will be more than satisfied while newbies - if there are any left! - should start with AINZ's chunky, sleazy 'Hangover', the Italo strut of From Beyond's 'Non Analogue', MR Gee's throbbing 'Gravity', Rune Lindbaek's sci-fi refix of Ilya Santana's 'Cosmos Rising' or, a personal fave, Kelton Prime's 'Disco Arpeggio', wherein nu-disco meets garage vox...

Review: If you like your disco on the deep and spacey side then this EP from San Francisco veteran and Smoke N' Mirrors label boss Shiny Objects is a must, packing three pleasingly varied mixes of the one track. In its Original form, 'Make Your Move' is a hefty little chugger with plenty of bottom-end punch, and should work well in the warm-up or for very late play. Spanish disco don Rayko gives it a slightly more urgent, Moroder-esque makeover that'll be the pick for electronic disco floors, before the EP's completed by a Shiny Basement Mix that pushes into housier, more driving territory.

Review: San Francisco native Christopher Smith has a long relationship with Om offshoot Smoke 'N' Mirrors, though this is his first 'proper' single on the label. It's got a slight Futureboogie Recordings feel about it, with Michael Marshall's excellent vocal soaring above a bubbling, 'future disco' influenced, synth-heavy house groove. It's shiny, heavy, hooky and strangely addictive - the epitome of 21st century house. Of the two accompanying remixes, it's predictably the Maxxi Soundsystem rework that hits home hardest. With its warm pads, shuffling grooves and sun-baked vibe, it sounds like it was created with Croatia's Garden Festival in mind.
