Review: Sometime Shadeleaf and Intimate Friends artist Simba has been responsible for some suitably warm and atmospheric deep house releases over the years, so hopes are naturally high for his latest EP - a first outing on Germany's long-running Quintessentials imprint. The key cut is "Can You Free Me", a jazzy chunk of deep house/bumping U.S garage fusion available in two distinctively different mixes. Singer Maddie Ellerby delivers a suitably distinctive, ear-pleasing vocal on the producer's EP-opening original mix, while the tougher, stripped-back Dub Mix is a bass-heavy delight. Speaking of weighty bass, you'll find plenty underpinning the off-kilter deep house/broken beat fusion of the equally as impressive "True".

Review: The Marcel Vogel-fronted label Intimate Friends has already done sterling work releasing deep house from the likes of Roman Rauch and Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and now it's Simba's turn to step up and strut his stuff. The Goodbye Miss Misanthropy EP is loaded with curveball house music of the highest order, with "Remind Me Of Dancing" particularly standing out thanks to Jyroscope's inspiring vocal turn. There's some off-kilter jazz moods tumbling out of "ITB Jam", while a fractured soul vibe gives "Love Letter" its power. "Last Time" is a honey-coated closer that rides on the laziest of grooves with some added sample power from a titan of RnB.

Review: Surprisingly little information exists online about new Home Taping artist Simba. BY the sounds of "Phase Seq One", though, he's something of a talent. You see, "Phase Seq One" is deep, crackly, woozy and soulful, sounding not unlike the heady productions of Detroit heavyweights Andres and Moodymann - all warm loops, bumpin' beats, classic soul vocal samples and just the right amount of filter tweakery. As debuts go (assuming this is his debut), it's pretty damn hot. The Black Madonna delivers the obligatory remix, stripping back the original and adding a little more drum machine oomph to the beats. The resultant version - blessed with occasional intricate keys and the usual BM Chicago soul - is something of a late night triumph.

Review: Drawing on a vast range of influences, Bejewelled tries and largely succeeds in being all things to all men. The title track is a jacking affair that features the plink plonk of xylophone bells, while on a completely different tack, "Don't Look" is led by a stepping rhythm and a rude UK garage sub-bass. "I'm Tired" uses a similar approach, but on that occasion, the bassy licks are fused with an angelic vocal, ponderous techno chords and a series of rewinds. Rounding off this unusual release is "Resonant", a stripped back techno groove that features the sound of rattling percussion and killer subs.
