Review: There has been a lot of activity from Simon Haydo over the past year or so, largely through the salvo of 12"s released on his self-helmed DEM imprint but also with a brief moonlighting on Studio Barnhus, to whom he returns once more with his ranging and energised take on the Swedish techno format. "Step Inside" rides in on a steadfast kick palpitation which acts as a vessel for dirty swells of synth distortion. "Infiltrate Imagination" is a subtly tempered beast although the day-glo melodic touches are still present, lending a ravey quality to the stern surroundings. "They Keep Calling Me" is more inwardly focused, although the limber thrum of the bass drum keeps things resolutely aimed towards the floor, while "In Silence" signs the EP off on an equally ear-snagging oddball tip.

Review: Until now, Simon Haydo has been largely residing in the shadows, meticulously churning out his own brand of mind-bending techno, a particular cocktail of sounds which veers towards the "intelligent" side of dance music. His releases for DEM have been bountiful, and he's even appeared on Avian, but this time he's up on the excellent Pender Mannerfelt Produktion with The Illusion Of An Alternative Choice, his second LP to date. The album takes a steady course to reach a hypnotic climax, by bending percussion, bass and droned-out synths into an aqueous framework that is a magnificent representation of the times we live in, and of how dance music is now interpreted from the underground masses. Much like the works of Wasserman or Thomas Brinkmann, Haydo's style dips and dives into minimalism, and yet leaves the listener blown back by the smart amalgamation of rich sonics within. A recommended affair.

Peder Mannerfelt - "A Narrow Dome" - (4:29) 159 BPM
Jesse Jakob - "Jaak" - (5:52) 128 BPM Hot
Andre Kronert - "C.O.D.E.1" - (6:43) 125 BPM
Simon Haydo - "Procession" - (5:19) 128 BPM
Review: This split release features producers breathing new life into well-known forms. Jesse Jakob relives the spirit of Chicago house with slamming drums accompanying the trademark acid pirouettes. Andre Kronert's "C.O.D.E. 1" follows a different path as the scuffled dub of Basic Channel is re-lived against a backdrop of distorted drums and tonal squelches, while Simon Haydo's "Procession" is like a more refined version of 90s Drumcode-style techno, its dark thundering beats fused with a growling bass for maximum effect. The one variable on this release is Peder Mannerfelt. The Swedish producer's "A Narrow Dome" avoids the dance floor, its foreboding soundscapes interspersed with the sound of plastic chairs being hurled off a tin roof.

Review: This album for Studio Banhus sees Simon Haydo map out new possibilities for techno. Remaining in dance floor mode throughout, his deft production touch, subtle editing and use of unusual sounds mark him out as a producer with real promise. "The Territories Marked" is all about the combination of resonating bleeps and abstract percussive ticks, while on the pumping rhythm of "The Strain is Too Much", the sound of the wind whistles in the background. Best of all though is the title track, with tripped out, jarring riffs and tonal shifts set to a jerky rhythm. If you're looking for a brave new look for dance floor techno, you've come to the right place.
