Review: Jalapeno bring us their latest V/A collection rounding up the cream of the label's recent releases. The line-up features all the usual suspects (The Allergies, Ivo FitzRoy, Flevans, Smoove & Turrell and label bosses Skeewiff) as well as a handful of newer names, and if you're a fan of the label's trademark blend of funk, soul, breaks and hip-hop - with the emphasis this time out firmly on the soul side - then it's hard to see how you'd end up dissatisfied here. Standouts for yours truly include Wolfgang Valbrun's 'Cyclone', with its big, cavernous production redolent of 60s/northern soul, and Mr Doris & D-Funk's rapped homage to UK childhood 'Back In The Day', but you'll doubtless find your own favourites...

Review: A solo excursion here from Smoove, who you surely don't need reminding is one-half of veteran UK soul and funk faves Smoove & Turrell. 'Take It Easy' is a reworking of Astrud Gilberto's 1969 take on Jorge Ben's 'Take It Easy My Brother Charlie', and is sure to be huge with the likes of Peterson, Snowboy and Scruff, and a dancefloor cert wherever shuffling, lounge-y samba rhythms are played. There's a Dub as well, which will be useful for DJing purposes, but of course that one doesn't have Astrud singing. If you dig this, then we suggest delving into her back catalogue - heaven awaits!

Review: It's 25 years since the release of Main Source's Breaking Atoms album, one of the finest full-lengths of hip-hop's renowned "golden era". To celebrate this fact, Geordie producer Smoove has put together "Main Sourced", a cut-and-paste tribute that incorporates elements from tracks sampled by the group across the celebrated set, alongside carefully selected rap samples. As you'd expect from a man of his talents and experience, it's brilliantly done, achieving a near perfect balance between the needs of the dancefloor, the dustiness of the original album, and the demands of Steinski style cut-and-paste productions. In other words, it's pretty darn good.
