Review: Sheffield scene stalwart Solid State has been releasing records - albeit relatively infrequently - for decades, though 'Seven More Minutes of Funk' marks his first new single for 12 years. In its original 'Strobe Life mix' form, the track is an intoxicating, mind-altering treat whose atmospheric motifs, suspenseful riffs and infectious bassline owe much to mid-80s Cabaret Voltaire. It comes backed with two tidy remixes - a ghostly and heady Richard Sen rub and an acid-flecked slo-mo re-wire courtesy of The Veteran Delinquents - and melodious bonus cut 'Rhodes To Nowhere'. A stellar return to action from the former Toko Recordings contributor.

Review: Chris Massey's Manchester-based Sprechen label serve up a seven-track collection that, taken as a whole, sits somewhere between house, nu-disco and Balearica. If it's moments of spine-tingling euphoria you're after, then allow us to point you in the direction of Ivan Fabra's 'Incursions' or DJ Steevo's 'Heroes Funk' - the latter being a clear standout, as is reflected by the inclusion of both vocal and instrumental passes. For more contemplative pleasures, try Ed Mahon's piano-led, MLK-sampling 'A Brighter Day' or Indigo Jung's soulful 'For Real', while Trudee Nite's bumpin', garage-y 'Dreams Of Revenge' adds some welcome dancefloor bite. Classy stuff.

Review: Paper Disco's Trash The Wax compilation series certainly offers a lot of bang for your buck. This fourth installment continues the trend, serving up 22 tried-and-tested dancefloor jams for disco-loving DJs. As usual, the selected tracks are a mixture of killer edits (Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee, Solid State, Electric Pendergrass, DJ Rocca & Chris Massey), sparkling remixes (a tasty '80s electrofunk rework of Reggie Got Beats' "It's On Tonight" by Norwegian eccentric Ralph Myerz), and stellar original productions (see 2 Billion Beats' "Bob", Daco's Gladys Knight-sampling throb-job "I Heard It", Picotropico's decidedly Balearic "Time Will Tell"). There's possibly a little more Italo-disco on this edition, but that's no bad thing - especially as the arpeggio-heavy cuts showcased here are universally excellent.
