Review: Mexican duo Soul of Hex has released some fine EPs over the last few years, with their sporadic outings on Delusion of Grandeur often boasting their most interesting and cosmic-minded cuts. There's plenty to admire on their latest outing for the Freerange Records offshoot, from the warming, peak-time ready haziness of opener 'Mystic'- a fine fusion of effortlessly Balearic guitar solos, warming disco bass, spacey synth motifs and dreamy chords - and the sparkling breeziness of revivalist piano-house/late '80s NYC garage number 'Love is In Control' (where vocalist Steve Lucas delivers a star turn), to the squelchy nu-disco/Italo-house flex of 'Heliocentrico' and the bumpin' electro vibes of 'Sphynx'.

Review: 18 months after their first Delusions of Grandeur outing - the rather good Disco Permanente EP - Mexican duo Soul of Hex return to the Freerange Records offshoot with another confident and ear-catching EP. Our pick of a very strong bunch is striding opener 'Say It Again', a weighty, percussion-rich slab of late-night dub disco rich in fluid bass guitar, echoing vocal snippets, layered drums and crisp guitar licks (think Trevor Jackson's Playgroup project and you're close). The fun continues on 'Pharoah Machine', a squelchy and sparkling slab of rolling late-night house, while 'Dreams' is a formidably drowsy, warming and saucer-eyed slab of after-hours deep house brilliance.

Review: During their golden patch between 2015 and 2017, Soul of Hex released well-regarded material on Quintessentials, Defected offshoot DFTD and, most notably, Freerange. It seems fitting then that their first new single in two years should appear on the latter label's on-point Delusions of Grandeur offshoot. It's a typically excitable, all-action affair, with the Mexican twosome variously offering up savagely cut-up, low-slung punk-funk/house fusion ("Disco Permanente"), starry, slap-bass-propelled deep house warmth ("Polygon Alpha Funk" featuring Cornelius SA), madcap, off-the-wall disco-house loop-funk ("Drum Fantasy"), heavily percussive nu-disco/Afro-house fusion ("Punch", featuring More Lotion), and tactile, disco-tinged Balearic deep house goodness ("Psychic").

Review: We loved the first instalment of Secret Crunch's compilation style Secret Bunch series (released back in October 2017), so naturally hopes are high for this follow-up. Happily, we can report that it's really rather good. Bavarian studio buff Sam IRL ensures an impressive start via the jazzy electric pianos keys, breakbeat-driven groove and squeezable deep house vibes of "Come Back", before Mexican producer Soul of Hex cleverly wraps '89 style warehouse stabs and piano solos around a bustling drum machine groove on "Solid Nature". Flip to the virtual B-side for Moff and Tarkin's eyes-closed deep jazz-house treat, "Young Val Kilner" and the hot-to-trot, chord-smothered U.S style deep house bump that is Clang83's "Seaside".

Review: Following a high-profile diversion on DFTD earlier in the year, Soul of Hex returns to the welcoming arms of regular home Quintessentials. Surprisingly, the Mexican producer begins with a dash of Jazzamatazz-style instrumental hip-hop beat science ("Far Beyond The Sun") before settling into his usual tactile, jazz-flecked deep house grooves. While the opening head-nodder is quietly impressive, it's these club-ready box jams that stand out. Choose between the warped analogue bass, dusty electric piano stabs and hazy jazz vocal samples of "Helipop", the late '80s, basement bothering Chicago warehouse flavours of "Roundhouse Kick" and the similarly inclined, piano-heavy bounce of "Hardchord", which sounds like Mr Lee's "Get Busy" for the Twitter generation.

Review: Jamie Odell aka Jimpster's London based label Freerange returns with a new compilation series entitled Almanac which showcases this highly regarded deep house imprint's current extended roster and believe us right now when we tell you: there's a who who on offer here! Featuring Aussie Andy Hart, Dutch duo Detroit Swindle and Hamburg's Kollektiv Turmstrasse to name but a few. Our favourites, again, if only we could pick a few, are as follows: We Play House main man from Belgium Red D with the sultry and emotive deepness of "Chez", Montreal's undisputed king of latin-microhouse Guillaume Coutu Dumont with the summery disco sleaze of "You Lost It" and Pittsburgh Track Authority with the dusty MPC jack of "Gold Trim". Oh and one more? It'd have to be Chicago's Chrissy with the sexy late night EBM noir crossover of "Presidential Astrologer" which will also appeal to fans of the Comeme or Correspondant sound of late.

Review: This follow-up to last year's Gentleman Cuts EP is a significant release for Quintessentials. It's their 50th release in total, and contains material from some very familiar faces. There's Nachtbraker, whose "Bronco" is a lesson in fuzzy electro/deep house fusion, and Ponty Mython, who predictably steals the show with a rock solid chunk of funky disco/deep house fusion. Similarly, impressive is the contribution from rising star Soul of Hex, with the Mexican brilliantly joining the dots between punk-funk, dub disco, punk-funk and deep house on the sweaty dancefloor hustle of "Body Shine". Those looking for more straightforward deep house flavours should check the Andres style dusty beats, soulful vocal samples and chiming melodies of Mat Chiavorolo's "Breakfast At Mat's Bar".

Review: Since launching the Soul of Hex project back in 2014, Gerardo Cedillo (arguably better known as Sebastien Vorhaus) has barely put a foot wrong. Like last year's The Muth EP, there's very little to fault on this second Freerange Records outing. He begins with the jazzy, left-of-centre deep house swing of the percussively intricate "The Clapper", before straying into Seven Davis Junior territory on the soulful, bumping and bass-heavy "Nobody (feat Cromie)". E.P standout "Heat" sees him thrillingly blend Todd Edwards style cut-up garage with warehouse-friendly acid house, while "Gas Motaza" is a no-nonsense chunk of giddily positive, life-affirming dancefloor deep house. In other words, you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Review: While Soul of Hex's 2014 debut, Lip Reading, was pretty good (and was accompanied by a tasty Larry Heard remix), it's safe to say that this belated follow-up on Freerange is even better. Deep, jazzy and undulating, much of it sounds like a cross between Moodymann, the smoky fare served up recently on Rhythm Section International, and the disco-tinged, oddball house goodness associated with some Sex Tags Mania output. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the electric bass-driven deep disco-house grooves of "The Muth", and delay-laden sax samples of deep jazz-house shuffler "The Third Eye", to the warm, compressed, hip-wigglin' goodness of "Sly Batique". Rhythm Section man Henry Wu remixes "The Muth", adding a harder edge, sweatier feel, and some decidedly alien synth lines.
