What Remains Vol 1
Review: 18437 Records is a Stockholm based label focused on the outer fringes of house and techno. The first installment in its What Remains series features some legends of deep house representing with previously unreleased material. Detroit veteran Patrice Scott lends his midas touch to Mark E's "Rain" turning it into an absolutely emotive and contemplative twilight groove, plus there's a contribution from the late great Michel Baumann aka Soulphiction on the typically off-kilter deepness of "Innit My Friend" and finally Tooli of Raw Fusion fame gets the late night boogie-down vibes in effect on "One 4 Dust".

OPOLOPO Tweaks
Various
Review: Cast your memories back to 2011 and you'll find it was then that Peter Major, aka OPOLOPO made his debut on Local Talk with a presentation of Actual Proof. Having gone on to work with Toolroom Records, If It Ain't Jazz, G.A.M.M. and Vive La Musique since, Major has been invited back for the first time since 2019 to 'tweak' his personal favourites from the Local Talk back cat. This includes some rare numbers from Soulphiction and Jamie 326 next to some straight up remixes of Urban Sound Lab Presents Miss Yankey and Wil Maddams - alongside OPOLOPO & Actual Proof numbers "Silkworms" and dubby broken beat slice "Hubble".

Talking House Vol 9
Various
Review: Local Talk's packed release schedule means that keeping up with the label's releases can be tough. Happily, founders Mad Mats and Tooli found a solution long ago: the best-of style Talking House compilation series, which here notches up its 11th instalment. Packed to the rafters with high-quality deep, dusty, jazzy and soul-fired house, the collection's highlights are plentiful. Our picks include the hazy gospel-house hustle of Soulphiction's 'Niederbeat Gospel Dub', the jazzy Afro-house warmth of 'One Less (Main Send)' by Urban Sound Lab presents Miss Yankey, the extra-percussive, organic deep house positivity of Vick Lavender's spacey 'Shifting Gears', the bruk-up breeze that is Anthony Nicholson and Mark De Clive-Lowe's 'Another Story', and the sunset-ready, bossa-house breeze of Shaka's'New Relationship'.

From The Vaults (The Remixes Vol 4)
Various
Review: Over the years, Local Talk bosses Mad Mats and Tooli have proved to be shrewd operators when it comes to commissioning remixes. As a result, the label's vaults are full of killer re-rubs, as this fourth collection of reworked highlights proves. Beginning with an inspired Ron Trent jazz-dance revision of Kyoto Jazz Sextet's 'Rising', the set smoothly moves between life-affirming, musically rich Latin house (Anthony Nicholson reworking DASCO), jazz-funk flavoured 4/4 smoothness (Kaidi Tatham tweaking Coflo), soul-fired organic house jazziness (Waajeed remixing Crackazat), analogue-rich late might hypnotism (a show-stopping Jamie 3:26 re-wire of Soulphiction) and sunset-ready tropical house (TRinidadiandeep's inspired re-frame of DASCO's 'African Power').

24/7 Love Affair VIP Edition
Review: Last year Local Talk offered up Soulphiction's latest album (his first for almost ten years), a superb, soul-fired set of bluesy, sample-rich deep house treats. Here they complete the package via a "VIP Edition" single featuring a brand new cut and a previously unheard revision of album highlight "Feelin' Good". The simply titled "Version" mix of that (track two on this digital edition) is delicious, with the Philpot founder layering expansive piano motifs and dizzying solos over skippy, U.S garage-influenced beats and a warm, toasty bassline. Arguably even better though is the fresh cut, "Niederbeat Gospel (Dub)". Living up to its title, the track is a thickset chunk of bluesy gospel house dustiness built around swinging beats, beefy bass and layered vocal samples from a crackly old gospel recording.

Talking House Vol 8

Review: Local Talk's periodic round-up of classic cuts from the label's bulging back catalogue returns for an eighth time, with imprint founders Mad Mats and Tooli gathering together a predictably fine selection of tracks. Most bases are covered - house-wise, at least - from trumpet-laden Afro-house brilliance (Dasco's "African Power"), and ultra-soulful, Atjazz-esque broken house deepness (Wipe The Needle's super-smooth "Enchanted"), to "French Kiss"-inspired house hypnotism (Soulphiction's "Believe"), 21st century jazz-funk/deep house fusion (Crackazat's fine rework of Art of Tones' "The Rainbow Song") and ultra-deep, Nina Simone-sampling dancefloor bliss (Emvee's "Brotherman"). In a word: essential.

24/7 Love Affair
Review: We were rather astonished to discover that "24/7 Love Affair" is Michael Baumann's first album as Soulphiction for 11 years. We were a little less surprised to find that it's superb. In fact, we'd go as far as to say that it could be considered a "best practice" example of the kind of loose, sample-heavy, soul-fired deep house that is all the rage right now. Yet the album's epic length - it comprises no less than 17 tracks - also allows Baumann to mix it up a little too, with a swathe of ocean-deep club jams being joined by search diversions as the morning-fresh broken beat loveliness of "Jus Listen", the stomping disco-funk of "The Mood", the bustling breakbeats of "A Freak" and the blazed instrumental hip-hop of "Good Night Ema".

Review: Germany's Michael Buchanan, AKA Soulphiction, serves up a 'French Kiss'-ish throbber on Mad Mats' Local Talk label. There are three mixes to choose from: the HiPhife and Classic mixes don't vary hugely, except that the former has bigger, boomier drums while the latter has a little more swing in its step. But it's the Jamie 3:26 Windy City Bump Mix that stands out: as the name suggests, the Chicago producer has drawn heavily on his home town's musical heritage, making for a rub that could snuggle up quite comfortably alongside the classics it's worked so hard to emulate.

Poolside Ibiza 2019
Various / Opolopo
Review: Now here is the ultimate playlist for your Ibiza season. Mark Knight and Co. present Poolside Ibiza 2019 mixed by Opolopo. His impressive musical career spans over two decades, with releases on prestigious labels such as Om, Tru Thoughts, Local Talk, Z Records, Especial, and a successful career as a globetrotting DJ. The compilation contains three brand new exclusive productions from the man himself, alongside a hand-selected a range of essential cuts - all in all there's 26 tracks and a beautifully crafted DJ mix. Highlights come from: ascendant Brit Cody Currie on the lo-slung Berlin tribute "Oderberger", Worthy & Option4's "Workin'" (feat Leela D - Kisch remix), UK deep house legend Atjazz on the super soulful "Love Someone" (feat Robert Owens - Atjazz Heads Down mix) and the man Phil Gerus doin' his thing on "Better Think Twice".

Talking House Vol 7

Review: Mad Mats' Swedish label release their seventh annual label compilation, and suffice to say that whatever particular sub-shade of deep house floats your boat, you're unlikely to come away unsatisfied here. Like it soulful? Then check for Trevor Lawrence Jr's 'Tiptoe'. Like it jazzy? Try Prequel's 'Lefty'. Fiending for those old skool Jersey organ jams? Jamie 326 & Masalo's 'Red Light' will thrill you. Or if it's stripped-back 3am tracky shizzle you're after, allow us to point you in the direction of First Floor's 'You Dubn't Know', with its throbbing bass and hauntingly familiar vocal sample. Now you're talking!

Bizzness
Review: Philpot co-founder Soulphiction has been MIA for a while now, making it an utter pleasure to have him back on our charts with some effective new house swingers. He's landed on Local Talk, one of the very best in its class, and "Bizzness" kicks off with a funky-ass bassline and some freaky vocal chops, while "Cart People" lingers at a steadier sort of tempo, filtered through mounds of dubbed-out haze. "Slow Glow" is an experiment in percussion, also meandering its wavy synths on an off-kilter mode, and "Sweet Dreams" works the drum-machine in and out of the groove, ending up with another off-balance house experiment for the deeper minds out there on the floor!

Detroit Love Vol 1 (unmixed tracks)
Stacey Pullen / Various
Review: Recently Planet E founder Carl Craig joined forces with Studio K7 to launch Detroit Love, a new label that takes its name from the techno veteran's touring party. To kick things off, Craig asked Motor City veteran Stacey Pullen to lay down a mix that encapsulated the Detroit spirit. In practice, that means a Michigan-heavy tracklist, with rolling, futurist techno, deep house and tech-tinged house cuts from the likes of Craig Sherrad, Delano Smith, Burning Bridges, Patrice Scott and Gary Martin being joined by similarly-minded cuts from international artists (see Soulphiction's fine opening track and Marcellus Pittman's legendary remix of Motor City Drum Ensemble's "Raw Cuts"). Pullen plays around with tempo and intensity throughout, but it's the inherent rawness and sci-fi feel of Detroit music that shines through.

Parking Lot Blues EP
Review: Philpot Records maestro Soulphiction may not have appeared on Lumberjacks In Hell before, but he's cited as a big influence on the label, and here the Stuttgart-based artist gets four chances to unfurl his deft instinct for dusty, soul and funk-infused house music. "Stick Up" gets the MPC grooves and twisting bass licks rolling beautifully, while "B3B4URD1" injects a little Afro-flavoured funk into the mix with another addictive low end flex. "Acid Test" pours a little more jack into the pot without losing that crooked Soulphiction flavour, and then "Dirty Hot" does a mean job of teaching all newcomers how to really do an edit.

Criticize
Review: SBM is a new collaboration between Philpot co-founder Micahel Baumann (AKA Soulphiction) and the mysterious Blunted Monkz (an artist who has made just a handful of appearances on EPs and compilations since debuting in 2011). Happily, the quality threshold remains high throughout. Opener "Gotta Have It" sets the tone, serving up a rolling deep house cut built around low-slung dub disco bass, echoing vocal samples and layered percussion. "Tripolis Jam" is an even sweatier and more intensely percussive affair, with restless cowbells and heavier drum hits working in unison with a fuzzy, punk-funk bassline. Finally, they unveil the EP's undisputed banger, "Criticize", a woozy but energy-packed, jazzy deep house jam featuring vocal snippets from the Alexander O'Neal classic of the same name.

Live Jamz 2
Review: Giant Cuts' Back To Jack series launches with an EP of revivalist house goodness from Phazon, one of the many aliases of Dirty Funker Paul Glancy. Title track "Freqbox" sets the tone, building slowly via waves of atmospheric chords and jaunty piano riffs, before morphing into an up-all-night assault of wild TB-303 acid lines and scattergun drum machine hits. The mentalist '303' lines come to the fore on the no-nonsense Phuture style jack attack that is "D Minor Experiments (Acid Mix)", before Glancy doffs a cap to Mr Lee, Richard Sen and early Bang The Party releases on EP highlight "This Ain't London".

Sky So High
Review: Two legends of the German scene inaugurate new Pampa sub label Hart & Tief. First up is Philpot main man: Stuttgart's Michel Baumann aka Soulphiction, with the dirty lo-slung minimal funk of "Sky So High" which is a perfect joint for rocking the after-hours with its dusty jacking rhythm and grinding baseline. Secondly, we have Fachwerk head honcho from Berlin Mike Dehnert who presents "Zumwald", another expression in retrained industrial techno with its meticulously detailed machine rhythms accompanying an infectiously buzzing bassline geared for some absolute hands in the air moments.

Riot Party II
Review: Philpot co-founder Michael Baumann last appeared on Musik Krause in 2014 with the slightly overlooked Riot Party 12". Here, he presents a belated sequel, once again showcasing his deft touch and effortless soulfulness. Opener "Misty Roots" is typical of his trademark style, with loosely programmed beats, deep chords and dusty vocal samples combining on an off-kilter deep house treat. The dirt-encrusted sound is emphasized on the booming "Brick", in which booming drums are eventually joined by tipsy horn lines and dreamy, drawn-out chords. Finally, he goes deep into early morning territory with the surging drums, distorted bass, creepy held notes and sweaty build-ups of "Amerika".

Musikkrause Reloaded

Review: Germany's Musik Krause, a Freude Am Tanzen offshoot, has been looming on the back of our minds for quite some time. By that, we mean that we were wondering where the label had gone, and we were dearly missing their grey-scaled strand of teched-out deep house. This Reloaded compilation is a comprehensive collection of some of the label's best stuff from the last ten years, a much-needed revamping of tunes from the likes of Soulphiction, the great Portable, Workshop's Even Tuell, Jay Haze, and Metaboman. Check it out, this stuff is rare on physical format, so this is the place to go.

Obsidian Fields
Review: By his impeccable standards, Michael Baumann has had a pretty quiet year, with EPs on Musik Krause and Circus Company his only releases of note. Here, he finishes the year in style, returning to the Philpot label he co-founded with another impressive pair of tunes. While the heady deep house warmth of "Obsidian Fields" is nominally the lead cut - think soul-flecked Rhodes chords, sun-flecked guitars and unfussy grooves - virtual flipside "Born Again" is arguably a stronger proposition. While it, too, features some typically tactile electric piano motifs, it's built around the kind of raw, distorted, broken techno rhythm he does so well. The track manages to simultaneously be tough and dreamy - a particularly attractive proposition.

Riot Party
Review: Of all the German house producers, Michel Baumann aka Soulphiction is the most heavily influenced by American artists. You can hear it at every bar on this release. Although "Ann Arbor" starts the release unexpectedly with a horror soundtrack and ghoulish vocal rambling on about the US town, the track quickly veers into the raw, loopy sound that has become Baumann's signature. From there on in, the release veers from the jazzy "Bass Jam" and the techno-oriented filtered groove of "With Attitude" into the sleazy groove of "Riot Party" and the disco-led "Detox". It's ideal for fans of Omar S, KDJ and Rick Wade.

Review: There's a raw, sweaty, back-in-the-day feel to this two-track taster of tracks from Philpot boss Soulphiction's live set. "Mind & Body" is built around formidably loose and organic sounding disco drums, complimented by a familiar extended vocal sample from a stone cold disco classic. Yet it also has warm keys and just the right amount of deep house pads. The results are electrifying, offering just the right balance between disco release and contemporary house chops. "Mind & Body", on the other hand, is deep house all the way - think undulating grooves, wide-eyed elecric piano chords, hissing cymbals and the most delicious "wet" electric bassline you'll hear all month. Stellar stuff, all told.
