Review: Gary Beck continues the fine Glasgow techno tradition pioneered by Rubadub and Slam on "Backward", the opening track on this split release. Tribal drums cascade over a rolling rhythm and in the middle of it all, a vocal sample morphs into a hypnotic Afro chant. "Data Flux", Beck's collaboration with techno veteran Mark Broom, is just as rewarding, only on this occasion, the kicks are tougher and more distorted. Bek 022 also gives a platform to new artists - with Hans Bouffmyhre & Kyle Geiger's "Inwards" delivering a flurry of tough kicks and ear-shredding sirens - and to seasoned artists the Space DJz, whose raucous "Double Zero" brings a distorted drum-led end to the release.

Review: Techno's relationship with outer space has been documented at length, but this release suggests that UK act Space DJz are operating in their own dimension. Unlike Detroit techno however, they have found a place where brute force prevails. "Terrestrial Quest" is a slamming, industrial track, its dark, droning riffs suggesting that not all is well in the universe. This is also audible on the title track, a drum-heavy peak-time roller, peppered with analogue yelps and subsonic bleeps. Despite its wacky title, "Wow! 6equj5" confirms that the Space DJz are locked into an interplanetary struggle, with hammering rhythms and building siren riffs signalling that hostilities are ongoing.
