Staffan Linzatti debuts on Balans, the sub-label to Dark Esser's Wolfskuil, with an EP of loopy, chord distorted techno. First up is the frenetic bounce of "Opening" which relentlessly threatens to push too far into the red, while "The Contraption" weaves, wobbles and bleeps like Jeff Mills at the controls of an out of control U.F.O. A reverby title track moves the EP into Frozen Border techno territory, while the ghostly and alien bleeps in "Control" create a spooky and atmospheric tension. Haunted DJ tools.
'Jeff Mills' is a term that has been bandied about a lot in relation to this release from Scandinavian producer Staffan Linzatti. Certainly on the ambient opener "Madness", there is a touch of Mills at his most esoteric. However, many of the tracks on this release, including "Lost" and "Control Room Failure", are built of twitchy, high-octane minimal rhythms, with the latter's analogue groove also housing a frazzled vocal sample. Elsewhere, Linzatti sounds influenced by P.God and Sleeparchive for the resonating bleep techno of "Who Knows Where To Go", while "The Only Thing Greater Is Simpler" is a dreamy, windswept ambient track.
Staffan Linzatti follows up his 2015 EP on Dutch label Field with this incredible debut album. Featuring an eerie, menacing undercurrent throughout, it sees the Swedish producer alternate between two extremes. At one end, there's the dark ambience of "Beyond Our Control" and "The Smallest Voice" and the piano-tinkling "The Life of Life", while in the other corner, there are spacey but dance floor primed techno tracks like the acidic, P.God-esque "Engineering(The Impossible)", the predatory bass-led "Intelligence, Rival" and the cold bleeping "Energy Absoring Energy", which sounds like Sleeparchive in reflective mode. Expertly executed, brilliantly realised and as sharp as a Mach-3 razor, Dispatch is a purist techno tour de force.
