Review: Making an impact in the world of footwork and juke across labels like Modern Ruin, Iberian Juke and Vandal LTD, Stayhigh's most demanding output of late has come through Ditto Music, with this quick-fire Muscle Trax EP following up two albums already in 2020. Drawing on something more soulful here, tracks like "2 Fast" and "Vibration" play on pitched R&B vocals and UKG elements, with instrumental hip hop inspirations making it into "Burn Up". Deeper club vibes come through the synths and staccato rave stabs of "Don't Ya Hurt Me No More" and the amen-infused breaks of "Da Chord Trak" that flex, glisten and gleam.
Review: France's Vandal Ltd are never limited to one genre or style, that's just not the way they operate. Instead, they like to experiment across all corners of the bass spectrum and, from tripped-out d&b to militant dubstep, they always seem to call the shots. This right here is the third instalment of the Grand Royal series, and the cast is clearly up for causing a bit of damage through the lower end of the hertz range. Our picks from the bunch are Signs' gnarly bass stepper "Bluntwraps", Hast's neo-grime escapade called "Badder Than Dem", and Stayhigh's closing tune "Don't Leave Me", a futuristic jungle bullet wrapped in an r&b flow. Another fine Vandal release.
Review: London's Modern Ruin hadn't been messing around since their first release, and now the label are back with a hot collaboration between Slime's BSN Posse, and newcomer Stayhigh in what could possibly be one of the label's most soulful and seductive slice of bass weight, as of yet. The opener by BSN Posse, "All My Dreams" is a gorgeous bit of sliding drums and placid vocals, and the follower by Stayhigh, "You're Not Alone", follows in a similar vein except there is more energy and more of a rise in momentum. Check all these cuts out; the moral of the story is that these guys are just simply good at making sidewalk bass music with an elegant, maybe eve jazzy edge.
