Review: Nu Elementz and Majistrate's Bites imprint hits the big five-oh right here with this heavyweight four-tracker from jump-up rising star Steryx. Following his 'Gas Pedal' EP on the label late last year, once again it's an all-out stamp session as he flings out some premium uncut grot. High frequency funk can be found on 'Self Destruct', weirdo wobbles and trippy twists are lurking in the shaows of 'Warmed Up' while absolute tear-up lunacy is coded into the heart of 'Twisted'. As for 'Witch Hunt'? Well buy it, download it, burn it to CD and chuck it in lake and find out. If it drowns, you'll get done for littering so be careful.
Review: Long time collaborators Steryx and Breakout link up once again, this time on Subway Soundz. Taking off where they left us on releases such as their Bullets EP on Good 4 Nothing and their Rules EP on Serial Killaz, here we find them in a particularly spicy mindset with two of their grizzliest razz-ups to date. 'Unnecessary' is most definitely necessary with its old school early noughties Bristol style riffage while 'Run It' goes for more of a laser firing affair, all sheet metal slaps and alien textures. Keep it running.
Review: Who let the dogs out? Steryx did of course, and he's not even carrying a leash or any treats to keep them under control. This is the sound of the canine furore; 'Mad Dogs' barks with grotty laser sounds, 'Contact' is foaming at the mouth with its high freq bassline twists, 'Shook' chases rabbits in its sleep with its springy energy while 'Submerged' is so powerful with its hefty kicks and bellowing bass it'll have you chasing sticks for days. Finally 'Sleeper Hold' cracks a tin of Pedigree Chum on your head and downs it in one. Who's a good boi?
Review: Following the inaugural release of Heist's next-gen focused Proteges collection in December 21, 'Proteges Volume 02' maintains the message and continues to fly the future flag for D&B. Some names you might recognise, like Blckhry, DJ Zent and Steryx, while others are much earlier on their release journey but still already hitting levels high enough for Heist to put his name to. Highlights across the 18 track set include the space-bound cosmic soul of Entropy's 'This Moment', the lucid ragga-splattered dark funk of Jack Spencer's 'Bad Boys' and Lash Lams' high energy buzzy jump-up stinker 'Ill Shit'. And that barely the tip of the iceberg of this powerful new talent showcase. A Co-Lab co-sign has a lot of currency.
Review: Good 4 Nothing remains good for everything as they catapult themselves into 2023 with pure dubplate intention, teasing us with brand new heat from across their family of artists. 14 cuts in total, each one tickling a different underbelly of the D&B psyche, highlights range from Filthy Habits' loose-limbed grizzly opener 'In The Dark' to the final battle charge reese bass of Phadix's closing 'Forest Calls'. In between we have startling savage moments such as Fanatics' horn-melting wonky-leg 'Bebop', early 2000s flavoured riff gold on Breakbout's 'Over And Out' and pure wobble science on Lundy's 'Ride With Me'. And that's just the tip of this mighty iceberg.
Review: Hot on the heels of their soft launch with a free download in the summer, Dispute's new label Undisputed Audio kicks off with gusto now with one of the most prolific and on-point newcomers in D&B this year - Steryx. Setting the scene with raw energy and dark funk, across four tracks Steryx leaves us under no uncertain terms - shots are being fired and they're hitting the bullseye. Essential vibes include the anthemic synths on 'Sky High', the mischievous mid range bassline on 'Unconscious' and the pure energy and venom on the title track. Bang bang!
Review: No strangers to Good 4 Nothing, Breakout and Steryx link up for some brash bassline behaviour on the long-standing label. As you'd expect from such a tag-team, it's tear-up after tear-up as they pair go in with stripped back dynamics, grotty textures and high energy bass. 'Bullets' fires off deadly shots with big harmonics, 'Cell Activity' plays Q&A with unknown aliens, 'No Expense' hits with bouncy old school early 2000s jump up charm while 'Malevolent' hums with pure menace. Shots fired!
Review: Both bubbling away on labels like Good 4 Nothing and Eternal Muzic, Breakout and Steryx collide for four addictive contemporary jump-up bangers. 'Rules' sets the scene with a monstrous bounce and widescreen harmonics on the bassline, 'Listen' gets sharper and more streamlined in its pace and focus while 'Torture' is much darker and tense. Finally Jay Jay joins the fray for the old school funk-up 'Mystic', a cut that licks up with classic 2000 jump-up cheekiness. Killa.
Review: Errors are lessons waiting to be taught... Or just straight up bangers in the case of young Steryx who seems to be rising a mile a minute with his epic, high energy output in recent months. Following his meaty Tin Pan Sound EP last month comes this badman package. 'Error' is all about the angular funk and grizzled groove while 'Pay Attention' takes on more of a Belgian flavour with its high pitched harmonic tweaks and ball-kicking drums. 10/10 - no errors here.
Review: Having established himself with a heavyweight collab EP last year featuring the likes of Blckhry, Amplify and Stillz, Steryx has continued to level up with every release so far. 'Headshot' could well be his biggest, though. Four cuts, each one hitting harder than hammers with crisp, heavy mixdowns, the vibe is relentless and widescreen; the title track is the peaktime smash-em-up drama and it's backed by tense nuggets. 'Perception' is all about that taut aggy bass stab, 'Get Down' swaggers with a little early 2000s style flavour all bleepy and switchy while 'Comeback' seals with the deal with its mischievous Q&A and bright breaksy fills. For the heads(hot).
