Review: Yours and my hero Steve Bug teams up with Hamburg producer Speckman who's known for records on Zissou and Pudel Produkte. Lead cut "Danger" offers something percussive, minimal and straight-laced with that undeniable arpeggiator stopping for no one. It's like you can almost taste 2000s once again. "Turn On" delivers something a little more staccato and abstract in sound that's almost Kompakt-like, even Four Tet inspired, through its musical yet overt dancefloor design.

Review: German Steve Bug returns to his own label, Poker Flat Recordings, with his latest release. With recent outings on Aus Music, Rejected, and Knee Deep In Sound, it's been quite some time since we've been treated to a pure, unadulterated Steve Bug original on Poker Flat. This two-track release is a fantastic deep dive into Steve Bug's signature sound. Patient and meticulous, "Alto Adige" is a slow-burner that gradually builds up to a deeply satisfying crescendo in the break. "Trentino" is similarly-minded but with the addition of rising strings and a beautifully epic synth lead that adds even more drama to the mix.

Review: Over a 30-year career, Steve Bug has released an incredible amount of club-focused music, much of it genuinely brilliant. Given that he's successfully turned his hand to deep house, tech-house, hip-house and techno, it's always a bad idea to and guess what he'll serve up next. So, what's on offer on 'Piano FM', his second EP for Aus Music? A real mixture of peak-time ready cuts, that's what. For proof, compare, and contrast the foreboding bass, glassy-eyed female vocal snippets, bouncy pianos and snappy beats of 'Piano FM', with the deeper but no less weighty 'The Moment', where raw analogue bass and jazzy stabs catch the ear. To complete a fine EP, the long-serving German producer opts for a classic US deep house vibe on the warming and loved-up 'Use Me'.

Review: A Poker Flat compilation to rule them all? 20 Years Of Poker Flat (Remixes) is a contender to say the least. With a bunch of sleeper hits by Steve Bug, Trentemoller, Argy and John Tejeda getting remix treatments from producers like Quarion, Butch, Guti and Acid Pauli - to name a few - Mihai Popoviciu's remix kicks off a tip with his sultry deep house makeover of "A Night Like This". Taking it back to 2007 is Greg Gow bringing a tougher sound to the fore once again in his remix to "Seven Hills", while delving deeper into the history books even more is Acid Pauli's 303 techno remake of Steve Bug's "Lover Boy" - and killer Queen sample - from 1999. From the same era is Mathias Kaden's 'Biox Ultra' remix of Martini Bros "Babyhaze" and Trentemoller's legendary "Moan" makes the cut of course in a reserved, tension-filled Tim Engelhardt version. Going full steam ahead into 2021, their next release comes from label chief Steve Bug, who teams up with industry veteran (and fellow Berliner) Cle on "Gentle Push". The duo have worked together countless times, both being veterans of the German rave scene going far back to its early days, yet their output remains as fresh as ever. Those early influences are abundant on the track, with its epic Reese bassline roaring throughout its pumping and ecstatic groove, with a strong nod to The Motor City sound. Review: Legendary German imprint Poker Flat continues into 2021 with the latest in their B Sides compilation series. As it says on the tin, Chapter Six presents the best of their back catalogue between releases numbered 126 to 150 - which were around 2012 - 2013. Starting off with label boss Steve Bug's 'Tell Me Why" taken from his album Noir, Alex Niggemann's expressive piece of mood music entitled 'Tangram" (The Deep End) from back in 2013, the sexy late night shuffle of Mihai Popoviciu's "Here", Carlos Sanchez getting deep down and dirty on the afterhours bounce of "Conclution", Hamburg heroes Kollektiv Turmstrasse lending a typically emotive and bittersweet vibe to their rework of Daniel Dexter's "Birds" and who could forget the low slung swagger of "Facebook" by Diynamic chief HOSH.

Tracks come Boris Dlugosch, Marco Resmann and Steve Bug to Vince Watson, TJ Kong and Alex Niggemann all deliver the goods, be burning italo basslines, techier dub techno and 80s synth to percussive melodies and other minimal actions. Simon Garcia goes deeper into tripper arpeggio mode with "Cavern" while the words of Theo Parrish feature in the Juno-106 house sounds of "Lectures". Get some extended minimal players from Mihai Popoviciu in "Call Me", with Detroit and Chichagoan sounds further permeating the compilation in "My Side". Dope.

Review: Industry veteran Steve 'Bug' Bruegesch has been more productive than ever in recent years. The Poker Flat chief returns to his beloved imprint for his eighth full length, which was produced during months of enforced isolation during 2020's coronavirus pandemic. As Bruegesch obviously didn't have to tour during this time, he could instead focus completely on producing without having the dancefloor as a constant influence. With that in mind, there certainly is a wide variety of moods and grooves explored on Never Ending Winding Roads: from the slinky and hypnotic minimalism of "Ludic Loops", to the sci-fi electro beats of "A Conscious Machine", the sensual and dub-laden mood music of "The Awakening" (calling to mind the sound of his sister imprint Dessous) or the knackered downbeat experience of "Raindance 101" - contemplation and reflection is more evident in his work than ever here.

Review: There is no doubt that Steve Bug is one of house and techno's most respected artists, and the second volume of this compilation demonstrates why he is such an essential part of the underground. It contains Bug standards like the seductive melodies of "Chordwalk Empire" and the deeper than deep house of "Different in Detroit", which sit alongside more tripped out tracks like the 303-soaked, moody bass of "Tweaky Blinders" and the low-slung jacking house of his Traffic Signs project, represented here with the vocal-led "Cookie Jar". It's a fitting tribute to one of electronic music's most talented producers.

Review: Poker Flat celebrates its twentieth anniversary by releasing the remixes that won the contest to reinterpret label owner Steve Bug's "Chordwalk Empire". Theobald Ringer's take on Bug's 2018 track is a heady dance floor affair, with dramatic strings and sweeping chords calling to mind the kind of deep techno that Slam made during the 90s. Next up is Facundo Sosa, whose version focuses on a slower groove while utilising a brooding low end that supports dubbed out chords. The third winning version comes from Esteban Howell El Bicho. Drawing on Detroit influences, beautiful electronic melodies unravel over a lean, wiry rhythm that calls to mind a mellow version of Los Hermanos.

Review: Riva Starr's Snatch! celebrate 10 years in the game in 2020, and this collection rounds up the best of their output over the latter half of that first decade. Tuff, chuggy tech-house is, unsurprisingly, the dominant sound here, but it's by no means all that's on offer - Rogue D flirts with 80s boogie on 'Take It Easy', for instance, while Soul Speech loops up Heatwave's 'Boogie Nights' on 'Soul Speech'. With tracks from the heavy-hitting likes of Max Chapman, Darius Syrossian, Steve Bug, Groove Armada, Wade and Denis Cruz, and cheeky reworks of classics like 'My Beat' and 'Pride (A Deeper Love)', there's useful ammunition here for house jocks of many different micro-persuasions.

Review: German power duo Steve Bug and Max 'Langenberg' Heesen collaborate again for the former's esteemed Poker Flat imprint, following up such modern classics like "NGC 6240", "Chord Cluster" and 2018's magnificent full length 'Paradise Sold'. Be prepared for some big time trance induction on the spellbinding "Emphasizer" - this is one of the most euphoric sonic journeys we have heard thus far in 2020. This is followed by good vibes and sonic positivity on the punchy tech house groove of "Thierry Moogler" - at once a dedication to the synth in its melodic bassline and, of sorts, to the French legend of high fashion.

Review: A stone cold tech house classic, Steve Bug's 'Loverboy' was first released on his Hamburg-based Poker Flat label back in 1999. Coincidentally, it was their first ever release too. Exclusive reworks have been few and far between, with legends such as Josh Wink and Guido Schneider only having the privilege thus far. Now as part of the label's 20 year celebrations, more names are added to that remix list that are equally worthy of your attention. First up, esteemed Polish duo Catz 'n Dogz give the track a tough bounce for the main room, complete with exotic steel drum sounds for added measure. This is followed by Berlin veteran Acid Pauli's Retouch, which goes for a trippy, minimalist and psychedelic journey that will sound a treat under the strobelights and the smoke machine.

Review: It has certainly been a big year for German veteran Steve Bug, who celebrated 20 years of his famed Poker Flat label and the recent release of "Mantis On The Moon" with UNER. Collaboration is clearly his thing, and once again he's made the right choice of studio partner, this time in the form of Koelsch wunderkind Tim Engelhardt - himself a Poker Flat staple - they both stare directly into the "Eyes Of The Python" here for Sasha's ever reliable Last Night On Earth. From the slinky and hypnotic sensuality of "River Of Babylon" which offers up something more uplifting, to the sinister atmospherics of the title track which is perfect for those heads down moment during the warm up set - or the end of the night alike.

Review: Steve Bug's first release of 2018 sees him worship at the Motor City altar. While the title track's percussive rhythm is typical for the Poker Flat owner's approach to house music, it's the other elements that really shine here. A ponderous vocal, like something from a Mike Huckaby production, intones that everything is 'different in Detroit', while expansive dub chords play out in the background. Ornaments regular Rhauder delivers a more uptempo, rolling take on the original track, while on Marko Furstenberg's version, reflective, frosty chords unravel over a slower, dubbed out arrangement. It concludes an unexpected release from one of house music's leading producers.

Review: Knee Deep In Sound have tapped two of Germany's true veterans of tech house for a killer collaboration here. Poker Flat head honcho Steve Bug teams up with Berlin staple Cle of Martini Bros fame, for the moody dancefloor drama of "Voodoo" which is perfect late night mood lighting. With its pounding drums, hypnotic chime melody and druggy vocals: this one has the main room at pre-peak time in mind! On a deeper and more sensual tip, we have the lush progressive house atmospherics of "Rise & Shine" which is perfect to create some more spiritual and introspective moments on the dancefloor - earlier in the evening or before the lights come on in the morning. Finally we get some heavy artillery for when the tough gets going courtesy of Drumcode's Reset Robot, who turns in an absolutely roaring rendition of "Voodoo" complete with doom laden dub chords and steely rhythms galore: this will have you surrendering to the void via a long trail of reverb.
