Review: Here's something of a pleasant surprise: a Steve Lawler record on Hot Creations that finds artist and label eschewing their typical sound in favour of something a bit different. The plainly titled "House Record" comes on like a long lost Tyree or Fast Eddie production - all "This Is Acid" stabs, thickset bass and lolloping hip-house rhythms. Flipside "City Nights" continues on a similar theme, with spitting drum machine percussion, jack-tracks style handclaps and an undulating bassline stirring long repressed memories of sketchy warehouse parties sometime around 1988. As a package, this is easily Lawler's - and Hot Creations' - best release for some time.

Review: According to Turbo, the label thought that Steve Lawler had written "Crazy Dream" with it specifically in mind. It's not hard to understand why - over a gritty drum track, the UK DJ lays down a murky bass and a robotic male vocal. It's exactly the kind of music that Tiga's label has continued to release despite it being unfashionable. Turbo has also commissioned an impressive list of remixers; Jori Hulkkonen delivers an acid-heavy jack track, while Charlotte de Witte, who has already released on the label, turns it into a firing techno affair. DJs Pareja from Argentina favour a similar approach, with snare rolls and an old school bass doing all the damage.

And it goes out all guns blazing this time around with a massive compilation with some great tracks, new and old, by the likes of Robert Babicz, Guy Mantzur, Wehbba and Stephan Bodzin. Review: Wherein Kaiserdisco gets to grips with music from some of house music's biggest names and emerge smiling. The take on Steve Lawler's "Distrait" is classic Kaiserdisco, with heavy bongo drums leading into shaking percussion and later on a dramatic, string-led breakdown. Meanwhile, the take on Dualton's "Face Off" is slightly more understated, with stripped back, minimal rhythms underpinning insistent vocal sampling and an infectious disco filter. But the killer remix here is the re-rub of Booka Shade and label owner Marc Romboy's "Every Day In My Life". Over tribal beats and a huge filter, an unnamed woman sings the catchy refrain "I got something for your mind, your body and your soul /every day of my life". It's the kind of vocal refrain that will seduce even the most hardened purist.

Review: UK tech house legend Steve Lawler last appeared for Adam Beyer on his Drumcode label back in 2008. For this new one on Truesoul, Lawler explains that it is a reaction to the current state of the world, mired in a current state of emergency and turmoil. He had to write something, but never knew how to do it (without making a depressing record) but here is an attempt to make something beautiful, yet carrying the message he wanted to get across. The result is a riveting hi-tech soul anthem in the form of "People" featuring Lisbon's MC Johnny Def, which also comes with a funky and bass-driven Dub Mix and a handy accapella.

Review: Last time we heard from Steve Lawler, he was celebrating "People Having Sex" via a storming chunk of Chicago-style acid-jack. On this swift follow-up for Robsoul Recordings, he's back celebrating muscular percussion tracks, chunky basslines and sweaty, late night hedonism. Opener "Feelin" sees him match metallic, brilliantly programmed drums with rave sirens, cut-up old school vocal samples and a tactile, Tenaglia style bassline. Flip to the virtual B-side for "Take Me There", an even more percussive outing where bongo hits and sturdy machine drums provide suitably heavyweight backing for manipulated vocal loops and a pleasingly foreboding bassline.
