Review: Lock down your aerials (literally, he'll half inch them otherwise), Nick The Lot is back with his cronies, the conquistadors of contraband, dishing out some serious naughties like 'Crystal', a sci-fi take on jump-up that's artfully restrained, or 'Bubbling'. A rattlesnake banger from NTL himself - it's a springy sledgehammer of energy. There's some proper backdoor action going down elsewhere, too... Metal Work's on some next level space invader riffage, Pengo & Shifu get groovy with a nicely funky/ euphoric build-up, StillZ brings some super chubby 4x4 pumpage (and a really cool switch) and Jenks and SKPY bring some 23rd century sleaze into the mix. Next level business, the real crime here would be to sleep on these.

Review: Whether he's on Pick The Lot, Gradient or his most consistent home Serial Killaz, StillZ is fizzing all over the place right now, and he has been for quite some time. 'All I Need' is a vibrant, energetic reminder of this as he charges into 2023 with serious momentum. The title track sets the scene with raw fusion while 'Power Cut' (with Alphaze) kicks like a drunken donkey AND makes a statement about the current energy crisis. Elsewhere '95 Steppin' is the ultimate ear worm that wriggles and kicks infectiously in your brain for days and 'Ain't Got' (also with Alphaze) closes the EP with a lesson in pure wholesome build-up tension.

Review: This line up acts are all people who you've probably been seeing more and more of recently, as their own distinct brand of jump-up inflected sounds are starting to garner attention and turn heads. Stillz is at the helm of this particular journey, a six-tracker that hits hard and doesn't any prisoners - not even useful ones. This is exemplified best by the 'Way Out', which just goes, any time you think it's going to break down it just comes back bigger and better. 'Twisted' will certainly make you want to take some, a grating mash of pure energy that's matched in the subtlety of 'Business Hours', which takes things down in terms of loudness but up in terms of sophistication and production value. It finishes things off with 'Space Boy' and boy, what a finish, as glitching, techy stabs rattle all over the place and shove you along with them. Sick EP.

Review: Informal are rapidly picking up speed with their releases, and this week they're following up their previously successful compilation with a third edition, this one equally packed to the rafters with both new and old school talent. It's a tour-de-force of the tough side of the genre and it's exemplified by 'Lava Cake', courtesy of Dutta and T>I, producers who know their way around the controls and who prove it once more, as stabbing bass notes and hypnotic vocal samples cut across its snapping, rolling arrangement with all the force and subtlety of an underground train. Jenks and Acp maks an appearance on the superbly gruff 'Big', whilst Dutta gets deeper than usual on 'If You Never'. Quintessential drum & bass that makes for essential listening.

Review: Encrypted Sound haven't been around for that long and this is their fourth release, but the maturity is already evident in their selection and what better way to show that off than with a twelve-track VA LP. Joining the fray is a range of artists including Able,Teej and Toby Ross, the latter of whom has smashed it out the park with 'Sinister', a stripped back and infectiously bouncy tune that nonetheless hits beautifully hard, it's kick drum perfectly placed to add that extra lift off. Teej has been killing it on labels like Co-Lab recently and he does so once more again, with 'Erasure' resting on an inch-perfect snare drum that provides the base for its choppy main bass. Review: Over on Bulletproof, things are getting heated as Stillz lands on the label for a rambunctious four-tracker with more attitude than a bull in heat. The title tune takes the cake for us as the standout, with a moody yet simple arrangement carved from an iceberg synth dripping in both tech and jump-up aesthetics. 'Looking for an Idea' takes things down a more foghorn route, with warped out sonics that bend into devastating low frequency oscillations. What an EP.

Review: Dunk & StillZ have teamed up over on Pick The Lock and they're gaining access not through a key, but by kicking in the door with their approach to crafting the low frequencies. 'Killers on the Loose' is a joint track from them both and it's fiercely minimal, sudden spasms being the only distrractions from an otherwise purely rolling sub bass. Dunk kills it on 'Who Are You, which is reminiscient of Jam Thieves in its production, whilst StillZ blends the minimal sound with a whopper of a foghorn that just rolls and rolls. Unreal.

Review: This release is big. Not in a super fancy or sophisticated way but in the ways that matter, the ways that mean you'll be going hard on a dancefloor at 5am somewhere when one of these tracks comes on. Stillz is responsible and he's over on Latch Recordings Recordings this time around, Tell Me is the name of the release and it's fitting. 'Right Never Wrong' is straight up roller business, with a towering intro that cuts away on the drop, leaving a pure line of energy and rattling percussion in its wake. 'Tell Me', 'Refined' and 'Eastern Flavours' step up the craziness even more and are where this extended EP really gets going. Top work.

Radical's Sound Killah is equally as naughty and rests on a potent set of drum hits, giving it an extra oomph that you can certainly hear. The others are just as good - check them.

Review: Brighton badmen from Within The Woods creep out with a straight-up remix swapsie situation as Bomber Man and Stillz go toe-to-toe on their recent wounders. Bomber Man adds a dark squelsh and technoid twist to Stillz' "Ready To Hang" while Stillz deeps-up "Chuck" with a dustier, hazy texture and more of a purr to the bassline. Nice display of remixcraft right here; the originals are paid full respect but just nudged in different directions. Within The Woods have been smashing it lately, don't sleep on them.

Review: Virtuous is a relatively new record label who have jumped into the scene all guns blazing, having released a string of singles over the past few months. Now, they're launching their first ever VA LP and it's top quality, with sounds that span a wide variety of styles, from rolling liquid to dirty naughtiness. 'Damage' by Code Lost is definitely in the latter category and it's definitely one of the best on the release, with a cavernous bassline of spinning twirls and a pulsating epicentre that pushes out the rest of the track in a slick fashion. One to cop, this.
