Review: Canadian label Westwood was formed by Nick Middleton with the sole purpose of keeping the funk alive. He's done a good job so far too, none more so than with new signing SugarBeats. This Oregon duo have been preaching a similar vision for years and it's no wonder that Middleton picked up on them. They recently dropped their debut album, Fly High, on Westwood to great acclaim. Now we get a different take on the LP - a purely instrumental version that allows the music to breathe over the course of these nine tracks of funk, hip-hop, glitch, and future bass.
Settle The Score (feat Ruby Red - Teminite remix) - (4:27) 55 BPM
Groove City Romance (feat Veronica RockStar & JP - Love & Light remix) - (5:15) 55 BPM
Review: Super-sweet synth boogie; Sugarbeats took us on a wild ride to Groove City last winter... Now it's time for a return trip as Adapted have commissioned a wealth of equally scrumptious remixes. The ever-talented Culprate applies the breaks for an uptempo take on "Riding Through The Darkness", Teminite gets all Kill Paris with his stupendously funky take on "Settle The Score" while the Zebbler Encanti Experience adds an overwhelming sense of cosmic funk to "Pretty Young Things" by way of a really cool slo-mo amen. Finally Love & Light strip back "Groove City" with a glitch-flecked, piano-slapping facelift. Tasty.
Review: With glitch and funk being two crucial ingredients in Adapted's bass-baked cake, it's kind of surprising that they haven't curated a set like this before. 15 tracks, each one focusing on the more laidback, groove-heavy side of the dance, the title really does say it all. You want highlights? Of course you do... Check the shimmering, soaking wet guitar lines and Bootsy-busting P-funk of Beat Fatigue's "Funk Tube", the 80s synths and LA vision of Farfectch D's "The Fever" and the grizzly gurgles and short, sharp horn stabs of Spekrfreks' "Juke Joint". Job done.
