Review: If dancefloor-oriented soulful/disco house and nu disco are what float your boat then this latest V/A from Midnight Riot is one you'll want to check for sure. Volume 6 opens with the beefed-up 70s groove that is Yam Who?, Jaegerossa & Suki Soul's rework of Stargard's 'Wear It Out' (as sampled on Pete Heller's 'Big Love') and closes with some pure boogie sweetness from SequenceProgram & Mishell Ivon, while in-between you'll find the hazy, lazy Balearic pianos of Luca V1's 'Take Me On', peaktime disco stompery from Natasha Kitty Katt, uptempo flute-fuelled funk from C Da Afro, the marriage of Caron Wheeler's tonsils and some killer disco stabs on 'Keep On Shining' and, well, you get the idea! Essential stuff for glittered-up groovers on mirrorball manoeuvres.

Review: Conan The Selector teams up with New Master Sounds, Brand New Heavies and Mother Earth vocalist Sulene Fleming on this release for Midnight Riot, which is a must for any self-respecting fan of soulful disco house.There are essentially two mixes to choose from: the Original rides a rolling backbeat and has more of an "authentic," 70s-inspired vibe about it, with saxophone liberally applied, while the Yam Who & Jaegerossa Partytyme mixes (plural because there are vocal and instrumental passes to choose from) opt for straight-ahead 4/4s and a more driving, energetic feel. Review: Hot Gorilla's latest must-check missive brings together two rising stars of the nu-disco and edit scenes: label regular Conan The Selector and sometime Tropical Disco, Super Spicy and Disco Balls contributor Toby O'Connor. In its' original form, 'Starlight' is a sparkling slab of anthemic nu-disco that combines 21st century synths and classic disco instrumentation with a stellar lead vocal from guest singer Sulene Fleming. Bold, celebratory and exciting, we expect to hear it lots when British clubs reopen later in the year. Also impressive are the solo dub mixes offered up by each of the producers. First Conan The Selector delivers a deliciously low-slung disco revision rich in rubbery bass, tipsy trumpet solos and Chic style guitar licks, before O'Connor smartly emphasises the beats and bass.

Review: With a growing rep on the UK funk scene, and BBC support from Mark Lamarr and Craig Charles, The Fantastics are on the grow. With new singer Sulene Fleming also on board, they sound magisterial on "Somewhere Finally" - a slow and classically soulful funk song which makes great use of the interplay between Mark Norton's sax and Fleming's warm and swooping delivery. On a more Meters/Jimmy Smith tip, "Up Yours" on the flipside is a Hammond-led slinker, while "Mushroom Strut" goes all out on a 90s Acid Jazz groove. Look out for their second album which should be hitting the stores soon.
