Review: German label Ressort describes itself as providing techno that is the soundtrack for "dark nights filled with stroboscopic flashes, fog and frenzy". Listening to Documents, it's hard not to understand why they make this claim. Ekserd's "Hidden Document 1" is an insanely heavy groove, its gained drums and pounding groove nonetheless shot through by a swinging sensibility. The second "Document" instalment is deeper and more musical, but the drums are still robust and teem with power. There are no such elements on I/Y's version of "Hidden Document", where a growling bass prevails over a pacy groove, while the Svreca take on "Document II" is a synth-heavy techno workout. Working with Array Access, Ekserd brings the release to a close with the broken drums and swirling melodies of "Wons".

Review: Danny Tenaglia is a stone cold legend, but his profile has waned significantly over recent years. Given that it's 25 years since the release of his first production, this first contribution to the Balance series - is well timed. Pleasingly, it seems Tengalia still "has it it". Throughout the collection, the veteran NYC DJ maintains a fearsome energy level, mixing things up via a track list that spans chunky tech-house, darkroom tribal, heavily percussive fare (see Michel Cleis' dub of Basement Jaxx's "Mermaid of Salinas") and intelligent techno revivalism (Dax J's brilliant "Dreamscape" and Ho's "Deletion 3"). It is, of course, an impeccable selection, as you'd expect from a man with Tengalia's undoubted pedigree.

Review: Having released on Semantica, Mulero returns the favour by remixing Svreca's "AvergAng". There are three versions to choose from; the first is a pulsing, tunnelling groove which grows in intensity as it builds. The other two versions, Mulero's "digital edits", are more intense, with pumping rhythms and niggling percussion prevailing. But Svreca's original material impresses most here. "Disorder" is a foreboding, slice of cavernous techno, while the title track is even more impressive. "AvergAng" dispels the myth that the Semantica boss is a DJ first and foremost, its bleak, stepping rhythm and singular, relentless approach rivalling the Warm Up boss man's own productions.

Review: Parisian publishers Unknown Precept mark their impressive first steps into the musical realm with a compilation of crepuscular techno rather aptly called The Black Ideal. This eight track release houses new material from a dark body of both well established and emerging techno acts and forms an intriguing bond with the debut issue of The Monograph, a new magazine dedicated to electronic music. Ancient Methods and Shifted strip their productions of beats, opting instead for overdriven sound design, while Violetshaped, Svreca, and hard hitting Manchester duo AnD push their drums and compressors to the limit. The emerging Casual Violence blend strings with a cluster of horrific ambient-noise, while last year's prolific ambient and drone pairing Saaad team up with fellow Frenchman Mondkopf for the cavernous "Last Love". Parisian producer Polar Inertia weighs in with the rest of the French contingent on the slow-burning "Antimatter".
