Review: Sub-titled 'Late Night Cruisin' Classics', Midnight Riot's first compilation dedicated to Yacht Rock & Disco is a loved-up saunter through colourful hybrids of blue-eyed soul, revivalist disco and the kind of slick and soulful nu-disco that sounds like it should be sound-tracking a sea-bound party put on by millionaire playboys. Across the compilation you'll find shiny cover versions of blue-eyed soul classics (Change Request's 'Lowdown' and DJ Mark Brickman's 'I Keep Forgettin'), deliciously downtempo excursions of the Balearic kind (the sugary street soul flex of Saucy Lady & U-Key's 'What You Won't Do For Love', Sweetooth's simply superb 'So Into You', the Ned Doheny-ish excellence of JIM's 'Whisper In The Wind'), and a really quite remarkable Sade cover (Samma's 'Sweetest Taboo'). In a word: lovely.

Review: Since first pitching up on ISM Records in 2017, Sweetooth twosome Paul Withey and Sarah Lazenby have offered up some the most soulful and floor-friendly revivalist disco-boogie cuts around. "Play My Heart" is another future classic: a Italo-influenced romp through kaleidoscopic nu-disco territory that boasts another superb, Danielle Moore style vocal from Lazenby. Ali Renault delivers the most potent remix, layering glacial synthesizer lines and bittersweet chords atop a hustling, arpeggio-driven groove. Eslewhere, Cuz Electric re-invents the cut as a swirling slab of Balearic electro-pop, Groovement Inc. gives it a low-slung and hypnotic disco-house feel and Rob Jam Web transforms it into a cheery chunk of nu-disco/80s electrofunk fusion.

Review: ISM's tenth anniversary celebrations tend towards the epic, with the Yam Who-helmed label serving up a series of bulging retrospective compilations stacked to the rafters with imprint highlights, dancefloor hits and overlooked gems. This second selection boasts 24 more tried-and-tested ISM classics, from the rubbery disco-funk bounce of Birdee's "Chemistry" and the synth-laden electrofunk revivalism of Qwestlife's D-Train style revision of "Streetlife" by Natasha Watts, to the spiraling Balearic disco throb of Pete Herbert's killer remix of Gemini Brothers' "Jeckermich" and the piano-powered nu-disco-soul of Rocco Raimundo's "Higher Lovin", featuring the smooth vocals of Stee Downes. Other highlights include the boogie-soul revivalism of Sweetooth's "Make Believe" and the hypnotic deep house/electrofunk fusion that is Mark E's fine revision of Heion's "Follow Me".
Review: Three months on from their last appearance on the label, Paul Withey and Sarah Lazenby bring their Sweetooth project back to Situationism. In its original form, "All You Gotta Give Is Love" is their deepest and most seductive cut to date; a sugary, glassy-eyed chunk of modern soul/R&B fusion that amply demonstrates their ability to craft memorable music that's more suited to home listening than peak-time dancefloors (we already know they can deliver killer club cuts). The accompanying remixes are, of course, more floor-friendly in nature. Groovement Inc step up first with a shuffling, 105 BPM nu-disco revision rich in swirling strings and Crazy P style musicality, before Dubai-based producer Don Dayglow re-imagines "All You Gotta Give Is Love" as a stab-happy retro-futurist house roller.

Review: Contemporary disco/boogie fusionists Sweetooth continue to serve up scintillating sounds. "Midnight Kiss", their latest missive for Danny Worrall's Masterworks Music label, is a bounding, P-funk-inspired romp rich in fuzzy synth bass, swirling new wave electronics, spacey riffs and the kind of smooth, ear-catching female vocals that were once the preserve of Crazy P's Danielle Moore. The headline remix comes from Glitterbox regular Dr Packer, whose sprightly, loved-up take sits somewhere between chunky Italo-disco, piano-laden classic house and tactile nu-disco. Elsewhere, Cuz Electric re-casts the cut as a classic chunk of rubbery disco-boogie, before Dubai-based producer Don Dayglow wraps squelchy electronics, colourful synths and elastic slap bass around a snappy nu-disco groove.
Review: The UK duo of Paul Withey and Sarah Lazenby follow up last year's Disco Fantasy EP with a single release that comes in a range of mixes. In its Original form, 'Vicious' opens with a familiar-sounding filtered piano riff, then settles down into a boogilicious affair sitting somewhere between nu-disco and Hed Kandi-style funky house, topped with a vaguely Roisin Murphy-esque vocal from Lazenby that's sure to inspire some singalong action on the dancefloor. HP Vince supplies a more overtly housey remix while Limpodisco's rub is the one for nu-disco lovers, with an Instrumental completing the package.

Review: Producer Paul Withey and regular muse Sarah Lazenby pitch up on ISM with their highest profile release to date. Disco Fantasy is little less than a sparkling, thrill-a-minute showcase for their unique brand of boogie-influenced disco hedonism. There are three original tracks to enjoy: the Sure Thing-goes-P-Funk warmth of "Disco Fantasy", a cheery electrofunk-goes-'80s soul sing-along entitled "Make Believe" and the slick and groovy boogie soulfulness of "Lose Control". While all three standalone as dancefloor-friendly workouts, the accompanying remixes from Yam Who and Don Dayglow are arguably even stronger. The latter's swirling nu-disco-soul revision of "Lose Control" is warm and loved-up, while the former steals the show with a rework of "Make Believe" that turns it into an breezy, boogie-soul anthem.
