Review: What an absolute treat we have here from the Smoking Sessions team, as they team up to deliver the highly anticipated third edition of their flagship 'The Sessions' compilation project. The great and the good have gathered for this latest runout, with the likes of Synkro, Rowl, Mercy, Audialist and Synpal being just some of the heavyweights we see getting involved. Across the vast 14 track-long listing, we have picked out three immediate standouts, those being the spacious synth work of 'Open Case' from The Nice Planet, the stunning drum crunches of Lewis B's 'Dark Clouds' and Escapism Refuge's synth-heavy sweeper in 'Nightmares'. Top stuff from all involved.

Review: Manchester based producer Joe McBride has incorporated disparate influences across the spectrum of bass culture and electronica over recent years for respected imprints such as Apollo, Exit Records and his own Synkro Music. His latest outing, the Information EP, comes courtesy of the mighty R&S Records and features four tracks with a distinctly UK underground feel; the half-time grey area beats of the title track call to mind the Autonomic sound the late noughties, leading into the ominous atmosphere of the seething slow burner "Signal" and ending with the celestial, immersive ambient journey "Last Breath".

Review: The Smoking Sessions team have always had a knack for putting top quality compilation projects together, with this latest selection being another fantastic addition to their already outstanding catalogue. This second V/A project under 'The Session' title sees the likes of Occult, Synkro, Versa, Sunpal and many more make their return, all delivering sonic-masterclasses across UKG, bass and dubstep themes. The whole project oozes class, from the glittering arpeggios of 'Deeper Future' from Teefreqs to Escapism Refuge's stunning 'Dust' original. The project sets a very high standard, but our highlights including the spacy pad textures and stunning melodic twists of Lews B's 'Hush' and of course Geode's gorgeous 'Some Friday Flavour' original, channeling smooth squarewaves into a fantastic harmonic masterpiece.

Review: From 'Connected' way back in 2009 to 'Collected' right now in 2021, musical maverick Synkro has always played in a league of his own and sculpted his own unique and disarming sound. Here we find in a reflective mode, looking back over past compositions, but also handing over the controls to like-minded spirits for some serious remix justice. Across the extensive collection you've find the likes of pioneer Paradox giving 'Luminous' a fresh coat of Alaskan paint, Akuratyde adding a whole new set of beat wheels to 'Weakness' and DYL flipping 'Agate' into one of the darkest perspectives Synkro's ever enjoyed. Full flavour, full feels - stay collected.

Review: Well following on from a number of impressive dubstep events across the full spectrum of the scene, The Deep Heads team have matched that all with this incredible new compilation as they deliver the third edition of their incredible 'Deep Heads' series. This star-studded lineup is pretty breath-taking, with the likes of Kromestar, Biome, Om Unit, Sukh Knight, Synkro & more all delivering some serious bassweight. The tracklisting is made up of 24 wicked originals, with our favourites actually coming from some of the lesser established faces on the project. These include the likes of Mystic State's sumptuous 'Society' original alongside Astrid, which boasts serious 'Anti-Social' vibes. As well as this, the more stripped back, garage influenced drums of Clubroot's 'Harmony' and dancing percussion of 'Traps' from Escapism Refuge also sit as highlight picks for us!

Review: Over the years, Synkro has become pretty synonymous with the more experimental side of dubstep music, often infusing numerous different elements of garage and techno into his sounds to create an incredible array of exciting rhythmic designs. This brand new album project is the perfect way to showcase what we mean, featuring 19 tracks of pure creative bliss. From the bouncing drum grooves of 'Get Down' and punching synth kicks of 'Angels', through to the dubwise delights of 'Dub Specialist, we see Synkro explore so many different avenues of sound with this project, it's a genuine pleasure to behold, and that's before we even get into the fantastic selection of remixes. For us, highlights include the stunning percussive mastery of 'Lost For Words', alongside the beautiful vocal edits of 'Tell Me' and introspective pad textures of 'If Only'. Incredible stuff.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a first collaborative EP from underground electronica veterans Arovane (AKA German producer Uwe Zahn) and Synkro (Brit studio don Joe McBride). Fittingly, showcased tracks sound like they could have been featured on an Apollo release from the mid-1990s, rather than late 2018. Check, for example, opener "New Dawn", where Manna-ish ambient chords and twinkling melodies rise above a hybrid IDM/experimental D&B groove, or the classic, Selected Ambient Works-era Aphex Twin loveliness of "Facing North". Some may hear echoes of Boards of Canada is the blissfully melodious and rhythmically jaunty "Rhizome", while "AspenA" would not have felt out of place on an early Biosphere album. In other words, this is a superb EP of retro-futurist electronica.

Review: Who says smoking stunts your growth? Look at Smoking Sessions; 10 years in the game and never been bigger. Inhabiting that fertile axis between dub, garage, electronica and dubstep, its roster features some of the most innovative names in bass music such as Djrum, Geode, Synkro. Here we hit some selected cuts from the full 14-track anniversary album. Ranging from beautiful new moments such as Geode's mystic string-melting stepper "Ishikari" to out-and-out cult label anthems such as Synkro's perennial "Don't Know" and Djrum's measured and meditative "Plead With Me", this immaculate collection represents the label's distinctive and striking remit and sets us up for the next 10 smoky years. Spark up.

That Girl - (5:29) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Pretty dope two tracker from Manchester based producer Synkro on fledgling imprint Pushing Red, which has already brought us some next level business from Jus Wan, ASC and Ruckspin featuring Jack Sparrow. "Viewpoint" is dripping with the kind of soul and emotion that brings to mind the work of Sepalcure, with garagey beats drowning beneath deftly clipped vocal elements and the most delicate of chiming sonic touches. "That Girl" is more beautiful still - with what sounds like a pitched down R&B vocal cut buried deep under a crackling half step beat. Bliss.

Review: Kicking off with a VIP of one of the killer 90s jungle nostalgia anthems of 2010 - Bladerunner's "Back To The Jungle" - it's a great start to the next Critical compilation. Moving through the tough, percussive sounds of Break, soulful dub tinged efforts of Breakage, the blissed out Calibre in "Rockafella" to the sounds of man-of-the-moment, hotly tipped Enei with his fantastic "Forgive Me" around the halfway point, it's immediately apparent why Kasra's label has garnered such respect from his peers. Lomax - one half of Loadstar - provides a deeper incarnation to his Ram bangers in "Innocent X" and elsewhere, Rockwell's "Underpass" makes a re-emergence as does ubiquitous anthem "Redlines" which closes this utterly superb compilation.
