Review: Hailing from the Midwest, Berlin's Minneapolis transplant Jon Hester teams up with Spanish techno legend Tadeo. It marks the third release from Hester's newly founded Participation label that following its inaugural Hester debut welcomed a Cassy collaboration in 002, that now rolls over into 003. Kicking off with some sidewinding phase-action in "Cycling Taps" it's a track that progressively develops with its staccato, stuttering and percussive stabs before giving way to uplifting rays of lights simmering above its dubby tones of void. "Matching Claps" then beats down with some industrial, warehouse force, before moving into some classic groove techno territory that at some points in its percussion section almost inspires a Mike Huckaby classic "Sandcastle". Add some epic clap sequencing and you're ready to boot.

Review: Tadeo has enjoyed a long relationship with Non-Series, but this is probably his most high-profile release yet. Featuring tracks culled from his 2016 album, Chronicles of the Future, the label has commissioned a remix package that features the creme de la creme of contemporary techno. Abdulla Rashim turns "The Net" into a deep, textured affair, Silent Servant delivers a dark, acid-heavy take on "The Need of Development" and Efdemin adds his signature bells to his mysterious take on "The Motivation". There is also a rare remix from former Sandwell District operative Function, who mixes Millsian depth with driving minimalism for his take on "The Big Step". Pris closes out this hugely impressive remix package with a dense, percussive version of "The Cyborg".

Review: Unlike most of the releases on this label, Tadeo aka Miguel Sar opts to open his latest release on Token with chilling, orchestral strings that comprise "On The Way To Reykjavik". The Spanish producer then proceeds to the dance floor, but again, delivers some surprises. There's the firing percussion and cold bleeps of "Long Time Ago" and "The Labyrinth", a drum-heavy, loopy affair, both of which are redolent of Jeff Mills rather than the grainy, knotted rhythms that Kr!z label is known for. On "The Globular Ray", Sar takes a leaf from Mike Parker's bass-heavy, tonal sound, while on parting shot "Ascension", he returns to abstract mode, drawing on the chilling shapes thrown by Jeff Mills.

Review: So many techno producers try to emulate Jeff Mills, but so few come close to his level. Cyclical Tracks boss Miguel 'Tadeo' Sar is one exception, and on this four-track release, he delivers a master-class in Millsian space techno. Opening track "El Caracter Exponencial" is a wonderfully expansive affair, its tonal bleeps underpinned by a lithe rhythm. "099" follows a similar trajectory, but sees Sar add in rasping percussion. He is also adept at delivering on Mills' harder vision and both "Checking Controls" and the final track, "Apollo 01" are led by discordant riffing, militaristic drums and machine gun-like bursts of steely percussion.

Review: And so the Token juggernaut continues, slaying all before it with some of the best club techno you are likely to find right now. Terra Incognita sees Spanish producer Tadeo debut on the label after a fine succession of releases in 2014 and at six tracks long Miguel Sar takes the chance to really explore his range. "Requiem" offers a foreboding beatless opener that is rife with tension, whilst "Deep Space" explores similar territory to the Something from the Sky series by Jeff Mills. From here Tadeo runs through various shades of dancefloor techno with the mind bending "Apollo 7" our pick!

Review: Oscar Mulero's Pole Group closes out the year with a collection from some of techno's most respected producers. While the overall tone on Unknown Landscapes is dark and at times unsettling, it never strays into the plodding furrowed-brow seriousness that often besets contemporary techno. DVS1's "Strobe" sees the US DJ deliver churning chords over a grinding, metallic rhythm, while Reeko's "Enlightenment Process" shifts from pounding broken beats into a spacey, filtered segue. That's not to suggest that the label or its owner have gone soft either; the squelchy acid and stinging riffs of Jonas Kopp's "M31" is as intense as it gets, but at the same time, contributions from Adam X and Forward Strategy Group tingle and pulse in a dubby, fuzzy afterglow.
