Review: Oscar Mulero's Polegroup label closes the year with a mammoth compilation that defines the current state of the techno nation. As Unknown Landscapes shows, it is a diverse place. There's droning ambience from Daphne RXX, while Reeko, Reggy Van Oers and Mike Parker deliver bleep-heavy, hypnotic groove that draw on the influence of F.U.S.E and Sandwell District. Heads-down loopy fare is also catered for - with the spiky percussion and bleak filters of Jonas Koop's "Fu Factor" standing out - and the form also revisits the rough, analogue sound of the 90s thanks to Karl Bult and American scene veteran DJ Hyperactive's contributions.

Collective Amnesia - (5:44) 135 BPM Hot
Inhospitable - (5:29) 140 BPM
Redemption - (4:45) 150 BPM
Review: On Collective Amnesia, Hector Sandoval aka Tensal continues to push techno into new shapes and forms. "Scourge of the Oppressors" is based on tough, metallic drums and jagged percussion, with filters sweeping in against this backdrop. It's an expertly executed, functional techno track. "Collective Amnesia" sees Tensal opt for a stripped back approach; centred on a steely, jacking rhythm, it's characterised by splurging tones and drums pushed to the limits. "Inhospitable" is a high-paced visceral groove. Powered by rickety drums, it leads the listener through a series of builds and drops. Changing tact again, "Redemption" is based on broken beats, shot through with tweaked acid tones

Review: Hector Sandoval keeps the hard techno flame burning brightly as his Tensal alias reaches the letter K in this alphabet-themed series. "KA1" resounds to scorched earth acid, supported by robust kicks and razor-sharp percussion. On "KA2", he delivers a looped workout, led by creaky, one-note samples, thundering drums and insistent, nagging hi hats. "KB1" represents a ramping up in intensity, with a pulsating, throbbing bass at the heart of the galloping rhythm, while
"KB2" sounds influenced by classic Jeff Mills, as bells crash in over visceral kick drums. It serves as a reminder that when it comes to club-primed, hard-edged techno, Sandoval has few peers.

Review: Hector Sandoval slips into Tensal mode to deliver this club-friendly release for ARTS. "Recall Damage" gets the EP off to an intense start, with pummelling kicks and a searing analogue rhythm recalling the more visceral end of the loop techno sound. In contrast, "Back to Birmingham" is a hypnotic affair, with Sandoval layering cavernous filters over dense kicks, while on "Emperor of Senses", he weaves niggling tonal blips into a rolling, percussive workout. Returning to the intense aesthetic that opened the release, "Huracan" sees the revered techno producer drop a peak-time, industrial banger, led by grimy, pounding drums and peppered with incessant riffs.

Review: Hector Sandoval's Tensal project is more linear and singular than his work as Exium, and on Archives G, he delivers a series of blistering club tracks. "G1" is a rough and rocky ride, with a metallic tribal drum pattern setting the tone of the release. "G2" is less abrasive, but still sees Sandoval drop a steely, percussive rhythm track. The Spanish producer uses it as a backdrop to unravel a twisting, rolling filter against. By the time he reaches "G3", the mood has darkened further and a predatory bass underpins the approach of grey filtered clouds. Sandoval ends the release in an unexpected manner, with the loopy "G4" drawing on Rob Hood's visceral minimalism for inspiration.

Proton 2 - (5:40) 127 BPM
Proton 3 - (5:45) 127 BPM
Review: Hector Sandoval's second EP for Soma finds him in impressive form. Favouring the kind of heads-down dance floor approach that has become the Tensal project's signature, the three instalments of "Proton" are tailor-made for dark, sweaty basements. "Proton 1" is a pulsing, tunnelling groove that has echoes of Sandwell District at their most linear, while on "Proton 2", the Spanish producer draws on the influence of late 90s techno to create a dense, loopy roller. The most intense track is left till last - inspired in equal measures by the white noise whooshes of late stage mmml and the wiry acid of Uwe Schmidt, Sandoval takes these seemingly incompatible elements and unites them over an abrasive rhythm.

Development 1 - (5:53) 127 BPM
Development 2 - (5:36) 127 BPM Hot
Development 3 - (5:52) 127 BPM
Review: When he's not dropping hypnotic techno as part of Exium, Hector Sandoval likes to make tougher club tracks under the Tensal banner. This side project has already yielded an artist album in 2015 as well as a brace of EPs for Pole and Modularz. Now the Spanish producer brings the project to Soma. "Development 1" sounds like an update on 90s Surgeon and Space DJz, with abrasive, acid-soaked kicks and a relentless, nosy riff prevailing. The occasional blasts of filtered noise give the track some added energy. On "Development 2", Sandoval opts for a more streamlined approach, with a linear rhythm unfolding over jackhammer kicks. The third and final "Development" isn't as intense as the others, but is a loopy, hypnotic tool set at a relentless pace.

Review: Hector Sandoval's Tensal has been brewing the brood since 2014 and he's played a significant role in shaping the current aesthetic of Developer's Modularz label in recent years. Closely aligned with Modularz is Oscar Mulero's formidable Pole Group, and now Tensal brings his aggression to the label for the first time. The EP provides two "Cause" and two "Effects" tracks with both halves definable by their sound; "Cause 1" is cold and bleepy, Cause 2" a little warmer and electronic, while "Effect 1" is some serious heat for the Tresor vault. But for us all roads lead to "Effect 2", a bombastic wave of techno terror with a deathly arpeggio of staccato synths. Bomb.

Review: Tensal is the side-project of Hector Sandoval, who is better known for his work as Exium. On F-Forma, he refines his sound to deliver four solid, heads-down DJ tools. There isn't a huge difference between these arrangements - the first and second are loopy, tracky affairs, the fourth is somewhat heavier - but "3" is the most impressive as Sandoval uses heavy tribal drums and hand-raising filters to maintain his audience's attention. The only divergence from this script comes on the fifth and final "Forma". Instead of pounding, loopy beats, the Spanish producer delivers a subtle, mysterious-sounding broken beat arrangement that showcases his diversity.

Review: Hector Sandoval is one half of Exium, and he also makes music as Tensal. Following a series of releases on the self-titled label, he now spreads the project's wings with this four-tracker for Float. "Achievement 1" starts the release with the kind of drum-heavy, gloomy techno that Mulero specializes in, while the third "Achievement" goes farther down this route as hammering kicks and a sleek, pulsing rhythm prevail. The second installment is the most unexpected track and follows the Sleeparchive / Sahko school of bleepy minimalism, but Sandoval ends the release in visceral mode with the grating Lost/ Hood-style looped groove that is "Achievement 4".

Review: Hector Sandoval is one half of Spanish duo Exium and clearly, he is using Tensal as a platform for more a visceral approach. While Exium releases are based on clean, hypnotic structures, the opposite is true here; "Eco 1" is built on a rolling rhythm and splintered riffing, while "Eco 2" is a grubby, rough groove in the style of Mills and Lost Recordings, the odd filter breaking through the acrid sound. "Eco 3" sees the Spanish producer make a return of sorts to the panning, tunnelling sound of Exium, but it seems like Sandoval can't keep away from gritty sources, audible on the noisy, looped "Eco 4".

Review: Produced by Hector Sandoval, one half of Exium, Atlanticas is a hard-hitting techno affair. The first four tracks on this release - four installments of "Transmisiones" - follow a relatively similar route. Panning effects, acidic bleeps and churning filters all sweep and soar over distorted beats and hammering rhythms. It's intense, mesmerising material and on the first and third "Atlanticas", the Spanish producer goes even heavier and harder, as industrial drums, panel beating rhythms and nightmarish filters prevail. There is a more restrained side to Tensal's sound, and this is audible on the insistent pulses of "Atlanticas 2" and the deeper "Atlanticas 4", but at both of these tracks' core is the same relentlessness that defines the rest of the release.

Review: Since first appearing on our radar last year, Spanish machine abuser Tensal (an alias for Exium man Hector Sandoval) has largely forged his own path, self-released singles that bristle with the twin attractions of Industrial-minded analogue synthesizers and the bowel-worrying throb of stripped-back loop techno. For this EP, he's been tempted to join Armaud Le Texier and Emmaniel Ternois's Children of Tomorrow stable, whose discography reads like a who's who of techno. Aside from the deep and sensuous "Thesis 4", the EP continues Tensal's obsession with robust rhythms and mind-altering electronics, with the ragged "Thesis 1" and metallic "Thesis 3" providing the greatest dancefloor attractions.

Review: Tensal is the personal project of Hector Sandoval, one half of legendary Spanish techno duo Exium. This is the third release for his burgeoning alias and label and it's as greyscale and no-nonsense as you would hope. This seven-track release, inclusive of a digital bonus, is designed to fuel the long-winded club night somewhere in Europe, and each track throbs with maximum four-to-the floor force. If techno from the likes of Token and Modularz, and of course Pole Group, is your thing, you know what to do.
