Review: No one but no one does piano-led house like the mighty Terrence Parker, and this writer will fight anyone who says otherwise! Here, he returns on his own Intangible Soundworks with a track that's served up in simple Original and Radio Edit versions. 'She Always Makes Me Dance' centres, unsurprisingly, on a nagging piano riff that's augmented by a matching organ line, underpinned by an understated bassline and simple 4/4 kicks, and topped with a jazz-funk guitar line and a chanted "something about me, she always makes me dance" vocal. File under "simple but effective".

Review: Local Talk has always been good at offering up themed compilations showcasing different aspects of the label's output. The latest, as the title suggests, offers up some seriously good nuggets - mostly made in recent times - that draw huge inspiration from house music of the 1990s. There's much to admire throughout the 12 tracks on show, from the undulating TB-303 bass, sparkling piano motifs and glassy-eyed pads of Deymare's '1990' and Gerd's terrific 'Deep Mix' of Mateo & Matos's Masters at Work tribute 'Maw Basics', to the organ-rich roll of Terrence Parker's 'Unconditional' and the breakbeat-driven deep house funkiness of Kiko Navarro's 'Dope High'. Kyodai's 'Breaking (90s Dub)', a mid-90s NYC meets New Jersey style gem, and S3A's breathless 'Sleepness 909', are also superb.

Review: The joy of the digital download editions of the DJ Kicks series is not so much the included DJ mix - which, of course, is invariably excellent - but the accompanying full-length, DJ friendly tracks gathered by that edition's selector, in this case Elevate Berlin record store owner (and fine producer) Cinthie Christl. Her mostly club-friendly selections are little less than superb, moving from driving, organ-and-bass-rich U.S-style house (Terrence Parker, Niles Cooper, Sandil, her own exclusive 'Organ (DJ Kicks)') and life-affirming piano-house (Ruff Stuff), to deep two-step (Camion Bazar), slamming techno-funk (Anil Aras), dusty techno (Adriyano), deep breakbeat wooziness (Ben Hauke) and deep, dreamy acid jack ('Anna Wall'). In other words, it's a blindingly good selection - and Cinthie's DJ mix is wildly entertaining, too.

Review: It's quite a coup for any producer to release their first record on Rekids: the fact that Necessary also features remixes from Detroit legends Scan 7, Terrence Parker and DJ Bone makes this release all the more impressive. In its original format, "Necessary" is a deep, swirling groove, featuring plaintive vocals and a bumping low end. Bone's version retains the vocal but beefs up the rhythm, while Terrence Parker's take sees him deliver a organ-led house groove with a truly celebratory feeling. Rounding off this exemplary release is Scan 7's remix: led by a snaking bass and clanking, metallic percussion, it progresses to reveal mesmerising synths.

Review: Detroit's own house legend Terrence Parker drops his eighth studio album in a production career that dates all the way back to the early 90s. Opener 'Glorious' (feat Damaged Goods) sets the tone: replete with Parker's trademark piano and a top-drawer female vocal, it's clear from the outset that we're in pretty traditional house territory. But few do this kind of tackle better than Mr P (especially in this day and age), and from the sultry, sax-tastic 'So Beautiful' and 'Naturally' (both feat Giani Bellio) to the stomping tech of closer 'Bad Company' with its preacher vocal, via the laidback 'Bestie' and the gospel-inspired, Seven Grand Housing Authority vibes of 'Shine On', the house lover's only complaint is likely to be that there are just eight tracks. Absolutely masterful.

Review: The latest volume in Local Talk's occasional reworks series comes from label regular Crackazat, who duly serves up a fine collection of mostly fresh remixes of back catalogue tracks. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the rubbery electrofunk bass, drowsy piano riffs and cut-up vocal samples of the producer's revision of Art of Tones classic "The Rainbow Song" and a sparkling, riff-driven peak-time tweak of HNNY's loved-up "Tears", to wonderfully retro-futurist reworks of Deymare's "1990" and "Unconditional" by Terrence Parker, a re-imagining that's the epitome of feelgood deep house. Throw in a string of slightly jazzier revisions and you have a rock solid collection of cuts.

Review: Intangible Records & Soundworks is a Detroit based label run by the legendary Terrence Parker. In operation since the mid '90s, the imprint has brought out some great music in the last year (in particular) with tracks by the likes of label staple DJ MoReese plus Gunbee & Merachka. Parker serves up one of his most powerful and poignant anthems yet, in the form of "Rejection" with its important message conveyed via powerful and jacked up diva vocals over all the the trademarks of his sound: funky basslines, shimmering synths and ultra tight rhythms.

Review: As the title suggests, Terrence's Parker's first album since 2014 was inspired by the two constants in the experienced producer's life: his Christian faith, and the ongoing struggles of Detroit. Musically, it's an unashamedly retro-futurist affair, with Parker largely delivering a range of feel good tunes that draw heavily on techno, gospel, New Jersey garage and Chicago house. Highlights are plentiful, from the warm sci-fi ambience of "The Sabbath" and rich, late '80s soulfulness of "Transition", to the bubbly techno shuffle of "Let's Go" and the rush-inducing piano house stomp that is "Don't Waste Another Minute". "Latter Rain", which is served up in two distinctive versions - the beat-less, string-drenched soul of the "Hearing The Rain Mix" and the classic US garage skip of the "After The Storm Mix" - is also superb.

Gratiot Avenue Piano/Unconditional
Gratiot Avenue Piano - (6:39) 124 BPM Hot
Unconditional - (7:19) 120 BPM
Review: Local Talk has pulled off something of a coup here, somehow persuading legendary Detroit house producer Terrence Parker to contribute a predictably hot two-tracker. "Gratiot Avenue Piano" is a thrillingly celebratory workout, all told, with Parker layering bold, hammered-out piano riffs and rich gospel organs atop a punchy, cymbal-heavy drum machine groove. It feels like the kind of track that will inspire spontaneous acts of clothes removal - tops off, boys - when dropped at the right time. Parker continues the stab-heavy approach on slightly deeper, groovier B-side "Unconditional", which wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Strictly Rhythm 12" from 1993.

Review: Detroit producer Terrence Parker delivers a sound that is darker than his much-loved garage/soulful house sound. In its original format, "Alarm the Sound" resounds to churning chords and dramatic sirens unfolding over tough, slamming beats. Parker's house sound moves in an even farther direction with the Dirty Channels remix; there, a stepping rhythm and a pitch bent vocal unravel in unison and lend Parker's sound a distinctly European flavour. John Tejada adds his own futuristic interpretation, with a techy undercurrent, insistent horns and dark bass tones. Finally, the version by Francesco Bonora and Marcello Arletti moves back towards the sound of the original, with tough claps supporting the dark chord sequence.

Sean Brosnan's Future Disco series has always delivered the goods and can always be used as a benchmark for where the nu-disco world is at any one time. This time, it's (perhaps unsurprisingly) all about the vintage house vibes so not so disco then, but still a thrilling listen. Highlights include the slinky DJ T-esque "You're The One", the ever-brilliant DJ Koze's remix of hot newcomers Mount Kimble and the deeply enchanting Axel Boman remix of "Naughty".

Love's Got Me High (Marc Romboy Systematic Soul dub) - (6:00) 118 BPM
Review: Originally released in 2011, but even more relevant today, Systematic revisit Detroit legend Parker as he dusts off the organs for a swinging homage to Seven Grand Housing Authority. With a timeless, strutting funk and perfect vocal pilfered from Jamie Foxx, if you look up 'classic house music' in the dictionary this tune will be listed. For a deeper, more contemporary (but still utterly soulful) remix then head for Romboy's take. Both are amazing. Let's get high...

Love's Got Me High (Jimpster remix) - (6:34) 123 BPM
Review: The prevailing wisdom in music is 'if it ain't broke don't fix it', and we had some trepidation when we learned that there were reworks planned of Terrence Parker's "Love's Got Me High". Despite these reservations, it's clear that Romboy and Jimpster have delivered versions that are respectful of the original and certainly meet its high standards. Romboy's take centres on loose, organic drums and soulful keys, filtered subtly. These elements provide the basis for a sensuous male vocal to intone the track's title. Jimpster's take is trackier and more suited to DJ usage, its hissing, rasping percussion combined expertly with an insistent rhythm, but here too rhodsey keys and crowd screams and yells ensure it has a high soul quota. Check it!
