Review: Back in 2009, Hot Chip's Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell came up with the idea of becoming a house-influenced duo called The Two Bears. All these years and two albums later its fairly safe to say that it was a good idea. Another good idea of theirs was to have their recent album, The Night Is Young, reworked by a host of hot producers. Highlights across the 12 impressive cuts here include the percussively apocalyptic Fluida remix of "See You", the malfunctioning electro-house of "Unbuild It (Naum Gabo mix)" and Patrick Baumel's trance-goth epic rework of the title track.
Review: Damn, Southern Fried are on a roll! We know these guys pack enough heat to bombard the dancehall but this EP is a real treat, especially seeing as it contains some of the hottest names ever to grace the house scene. It's a remix affair, all 4/4 and bouncy, starting with DJ Sneak's refix of "Work It Out" by The 2 Bears and shifting proudly to don Armand Van Helden's re-interpretation of "Crazy Talk" by Space Cowboy - a veritable club anthem and an immediate catch. Even Claude Von Stroke puts in an appearance along with Diplo and Alex Shelby, but it's Derrick Carter's rework of "I Jack U" by Riva Starr that really puts things into perspective and places Southern Fried in the big leagues - Unmissable!
Review: Doorly steps up to compile Souther Fried's fourth instalment of the Southern Fried & Tested series. There's over forty-five tracks on here so it should keep you moving and warm for the entire duration of the summer, not to mention Doorly's ingenious mixing and mash-up style. The compilation also spans many different sub-genres of house, from booty, electro, tech and more dancehall-inspired tunes, creating one hell of a party and one beauty of an addition to Southern Fried's catalogue! Check the "Big Booya" acappella!
Crookers - "That Laughing Track" (feat Style Of Eye & Carli - Sona Vabos remix) - (5:53) 122 BPM
Review: This collection highlights the many different approaches that Vabos applies to remixing. On one hand there's the bass-heavy, forceful techno of the remix of The Black Ghost's "Forgetfulness", while at the other end of the spectrum, Sona Vabos adds some spaced out, dubby beats to The Mighty Dub Katz classic "Magic Carpet Ride" and adds house suss to the 2 Bears' tongue in cheek pop ditty "Work". In between these polar opposites, there's the scary vocals, dank acid licks and belching bass of the rework of Chicken Lips' "Dromp" and the pulsing 303s and eerie synths on the reshape of His Majesty Andre's "Hymn".
Review: Bristol-based rising stars Jaymo and Andy George are regular collaborators. Here, they join forces again to launch Moda Music offshoot Moda Black with a compilation of previously unreleased material. For those interested in the new wave of British and European house, it should be an essential purchase. Some of the duo's own Bristol pals make an appearance, with strong contributions from Lukas (the darting "Best In Show") and Eats Everything & Idiotproof (an excellent, peaktime-friendly remix of The 2 Bears). Elsewhere, highlights include a grandiose new cut from the duo themselves, an organ-heavy garage-meets-cocaine house banger from Disclosure, and a cacophonous rinse-out from Hot Since 82.
