Review: When they were asked to put together the latest volume in the "DJ Kicks" series, Mount Kimbie boys Dominic Maker and Kai Campos drew influence from a recent six-date run supporting Actress. As a result, the 22 tracks they have chosen - here presented in DJ friendly, unmixed form - tend towards the experimental and off-kilter, touching on a myriad of styles (ambient, industrial-era experimentalism, South American influenced tropical drum jams, spacey modular techno, raw-edged peak-time jams, mind-altering acid weirdness and intergalactic electro all feature) in the process. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the hypnotic dancefloor intensity of Stanislav Tolkachev and bleeping body-jack of A Sagittariun, to the skewed warmth of Severed Heads and the dream-like weirdness of their own exclusive contribution, "Southgate".

Review: The Abstract Eye is Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, a producer who releases music mainly using the monikers GB, The Reflektor, Frankie Reyes and Julian Abelar. Five prolific, soulful/melodic tracks originally released in 2011 on Valentine Connexion, are now available again courtesy of Amsterdam's always reliable Rush Hour. The extraordinarily gifted Los Angeleno creates striking electronic songs here, which integrate the technological with the spiritual and ancestral. There's respectful nods on here to Motor City greats like Japanese Telecom ("Cool Warm Divine") and John Beltran ("Nobody Else"). Might we also mention "Nobody Else Pt. 2" which channels the cyclical/minimal soul of Internal Empire era Robert Hood: absolutely sublime!

Egypt/Reflexes
Funkineven - "Egypt" - (5:24) Hot
The Abstract Eye - "Reflexes" - (6:46)
Review: Although Funkineven's been an Eglozoid from the label's early days, recent times have seen the producer and DJ develop an independent streak, establishing his own Apron label and laying down collaborative roots with like-minded stateside artists Kyle Hall and Delroy Edwards. The bond is still strong however, and Funkineven makes a superb return to Eglo colours here with "Egypt" a cut described quite aptly by the label as a "Sakamoto-esque journey over the pyramids," combining throbbing sub bass with pulsating synth buzz. On the virtual flip is Gifted & Blessed's "Reflexes", a highlight amongst highlights of the Eglo Records Vol 1 compilation issued earlier this year and here committed to wax for the very first time. The track's fractured analogue nature is a fine accompaniment to Funkineven's A-side.
