Review: Well, thank God for the Tru Funk label, because without them pushing their collaborative mini-comps we'd be living in a world without the sample-heavy side of breakbeat. This is all strictly mash-up material, blending everything from soul to disco and hip-hop in the process. BadboE's "Get Ready Shorty", for example, has got Busta Rhymes' inimitable roar riding over an intricate bundle of funk samples, while "Where's The Party" from Chudy manages to create a deliciously vintage cocktail out of early-era rap and nu-school breaks. Whatever the flavor, you know Tru Funk will deliver. Party-starters, the lot of them!
Review: As you can imagine, Breakbeat Paradise Recordings specializes in the sort of house music that's carried by chunky blockade of beats and bass, all rounded off by a distinctive electro swing. This is the second chapter of the Big Fat Mama Beats series and, once again, the imprint have gone to extreme measures to secure a supremely effective line-up for both them and us. There's not a dull moment in here, or anything remotely beatless, so be sure to cop yourself this super-charged, super floor-minded collection of new-school breaks for the masses.
Review: The Funk Fury has been known to deliver a whole range of production styles, but on party breaks label Bomb Strikes, he presents three mainly slow retro groovers. "Keep On Lovin' Me" begins the show with a buzzy, humming bassline and a laid back breaky groove before being fleshed with familiar and catchy vintage 'baa-bah-bah-baah-bah-baaaah' vocal samples. Next, "That's The Funk" is bouncier, with clap-along drums and a whole patchwork of interwoven classic funk samples. "Tribe Of Disco" is the black sheep here, shaking things up with a speedy 70s disco-rock hybrid that is guaranteed to get everybody up on their feet!
Review: The Funky Fury steps out of the pan and dive straight into the fire with this new three-tracker for MustBeat. What you see is what you get here, and what you get is a trio of dance-friendly, DJ tools that span house, two-step, and pure breakbeats. "Like" rolls forwards with its easy, house-fuelled groove and hummable bass tones, while "Birdy" is deeper, more sensual, and something of an r&b crossover, and "Baw Baw" makes use of a placid, psyched-out synth to tie its chunky breaks together into a tight groove.
