Review: Awakenings is the second album from Lilly Phoenix aka The Subdermic, and delivers an uncompromising, raw take on techno. From the bass-heavy turmoil of "The Theme From The Triangle" into the acid-tinged, pumping "Forty Days and One Week" to the wonky, rave-themed "The Passion" and the robotic but slightly detuned "Armies of One", this is a heady rush through the mind of one of the UK's most underrated techno producers. Phoenix deserves extra praise for including wild, left of centre jams, like the malfunctioning machines and rave breaks on the title track and her uniquely garbled take on electronic disco on "Playboy's Delight". No wonder Dave Clarke and Claude Young are massive fans.
