Review: The Occupants series is a split release project from Science Cult, the label that artists like Carl Finlow, Cygnus and Umek's Zeta Reticula project all call home. This first volume covers electro, but in the broadest sense. Thee J Johanz' "Woodpecker" is an acid-fried break beat track. At the other end of the spectrum, Aura Nox's "Mutiny On The Voyage To Azimut" sees the Science Cult artist voyage to the sound's outer limits. Remaining in that space is Blixaboy's dub-tinged "Bushido Initiative". St. Theodore presents a more ominous sound on "No Future", an arrangement that is led by a punishing sub-bass, and for a pure futuristic hit, it is hard to better the skeletal rhythms of Arsonist Recorder's "Heat Seek".

Review: If you know your dance music history, you'll no doubt already have recognised this EP's artwork... for those that haven't, it's a pastiche of the cover of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love', and never has the phrase "wears its musical influences on its sleeve" been more apt! Inside you'll find four slices of hi-octane electronic disco in the classic Moroder/Cowley mode, with 'More Love!' itself blurring the lines between homage, re-edit and cover, 'Kicking In (Patrick Cowley)' continuing the theme and the surging, euphoric 'Warped Minds' sporting a gloriously cheesy vocodered vocal and coming accompanied by a FIERCE dub/beats pass from Johanz himself.

Review: Johanz Westerman is back! The Ballyhoo! boss presents another fine serving of oddball/Italo referencing techno jams that he's now quite renowned for. Opening track "R U There" calls to mind fellow local retroverts such as I-F or pretty much anything on Bunker, really. With its warbling analogue melody, rusty vintage drum patterns and cutesy/catchy melody: no one quite does it like the Dutch! On the flip "K Clap West" gives us a taste for the acid life on this stripped back groove that really works that little silver Roland box like a you know what. Finally "More Cowbell!" certainly leaves little to the imagination, but good gosh this is total dancefloor devastation that creates so much, amazingly, with so little: hands up!
