Review: The title's very apt here, as Record Kicks serve up a collection of (more or less) contemporary jazz cuts to inspire your inner auteur. Third Coast Kings, for instance, bring us 'Errol Flynns', which conjures Blaxploitation-esque images of a late-night cab ride through 70s Harlem, while Moonbrow & Paolo Apollo Negri's 'Project Gemini' could easily soundtrack a 60s spy caper in which our hero, in his sharp Italian suit and trench coat, wanders into a wigged-out Chelsea happening complete lava lamps, oil projectors and heavily mascara'd girls in geometric-patterned Mary Quant mini-dresses. You get the idea: think 'Library Music (The Extended Remix)', but in the best possible way.

Review: A pleasant surprise, this album. Normally, when a collection of 'new old' funk of this ilk lands in the inbox, the talent roster comes replete with all the usual suspects, but of the 12 artists featured here, only Tanika Charles's name has previously registered on this reviewer's radar - which makes the dozen authentically sleazy, cinematic and Blaxploitation-esque funkers contained herein all the more of an achievement! With the quality meter showing 'Max' throughout, picking highlights is a bit superfluous - just sit back and enjoy, ideally while sipping coffee and brandy in a 3am East Village diner as you wait for the sting to go down...

Review: Here we see the eagerly awaited debut album from Third Coast Kings, an eight-piece deep funk and soul outfit from Detroit/Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their eponymously titled debut set is packed tight with a dozen deep funk nuggets brimming with soul, with tracks like "Give Me Your Love" and "Roughneck" showcasing the band's outrageously good horn and rhythm section. Expect highly-charged lashings of drums, trombone, bass, saxophone and trumpet to seep into every pore upon listening to this album. Highly recommended.
