Review: Third Ear deserves kudos for putting together this massive, 28-track compilation of Thomas Brinkmann's released and rare material. It serves as a reminder that the veteran German producer has been one of the most influential - but sometimes overlooked - names in European house and techno. From the wild cut-ups and rolling snares of disposable "Sur Ace" and the noisy, ebm-style "2 Sun" to the lopsided, melancholy grooves of "Crazy" and "Souls", the scope and range of Retrospektiv is impressive. The compilation also succeeds in providing a reminder that Brinkmann's dance floor credentials are impeccable and the quirky "What You're Doin" and the toy town synths and gentle white noise of "Isch" are as impressive as anything that Akufen produced.

Review: On his newest release for avant electronic powerhouse Editions Mego, German minimal techno legend Thomas Brinkmann. Brinkmann digitally recreated the timbre of a grand piano and then subjected the synthetic sound to a brutal MIDI workout. Also of inspiration were airport terminals, or as he named them 'no-places', and their sterile surroundings devoid of any personality or soul which informed the track titles. The album sits somewhere between mystique concrete, glitch and death metal drumming, if you can imagine such a thing.

Guy Martin EP
Tt - (8:29) 128 BPM Hot
On Edge - (6:40) 120 BPM
Blackhill - (5:40)
Review: The first Brinkmann release in three years under his own name finds him in decidedly playful form. Opening track "Tt" has a jittery rhythm and a sense of urgency thanks to its grinding bassline and trancey chord sequences. "On Edge" is even clubbier; behind a buzz saw bass that grinds, builds and drops there lurks a stop-start, abstract rhythm. Guy Martin also shows what happens when Brinkmann gives full vent to his melodic side. "Blackhill" is a gloriously mellow, melodic arrangement, its kooky hooks unfolding over gentle broken beats, but with the kind of processed clicks and whirrs that defines every Brinkmann release.
