Review: Center is Tobias Freund's third studio album for Ostgut and its title provides a good indication of where its author is at. It veers in style from the dense electro of "Cr 24" to the experimental abstractions of "Autopoiesis" and "Single Minded" and ominous dark ambient compositions like "In Between". There is more dance floor friendly techno tracks such as "Blind Mass", but it is not like Freund makes conventional music and both "Mass" and "Syndrome" resound to stepping rhythms, layered textures and insistent percussion. This has a lot to do with Freund's background as a studio engineer and his perfectionist approach, and it feels like every note, tone and frequency on Center has been carefully, expertly calculated.

Review: This is the first material from Tobias Freund in two years, but it has been worth the wait. It starts in understated form with the downtempo drones of "Lageos 1". "Nucleon" picks up the pace somewhat with its jittery, clicky rhythm and bleary bass tones, like a black hawk helicopter landing in slow motion. By the time he gets to "Helios", the atmosphere has become frostier as razor blade percussion provides the backdrop for a world of icy textures and snow-capped soundscapes. Closing track "Spectrum V" raises the prospect of the dance floor, but only if disconnected stepping rhythms and muffled robot vocals are your thing.

Review: If the Acht release accommodates Panorama Bar's house sensibilities, then Sieben is sure to be played out on Berghain's main floor. That said, the seventh release in Ostgut's 10-strong series starts with Martyn in reflective mood. With its loose, tribal drums, ponderous vocal and dubby chords, "Jah Bedouin" could be the Dutch producer's own version of Bandulu's distinctive techno. Tobias and Atoma soon pick up the pace though, and their "Physik E7532" fuses steely claps and clanging rhythms with grimy acid lines. Luke Slater ramps up the intensity levels further with Planetary Assault System's "Hama Static", a bleep-heavy banger that will drill its way into your cranium.

Review: The eighth installment in Ostgut's ten-vinyl strong release series is sure to be a desirable item not just for fans of the Berlin label. All of the tracks on Acht take the listener down a disco-fied route. First up is Berghain resident Marcel Fengler and Efdemin as DIN; the pair's "Mono" is a crackling, pulsating groove that hints at industrial and noise influences. Fiedel's "Probe 806" goes farther in this direction with an electronic rhythm underscoring detuned rave sirens. Finally, there's Tobias' "Like A Drug". Its cut-up vocal sample and tracky backing, coupled with some buzzing acid, is tailor made for the shutter-opening ritual that is central to the Panorama Bar experience.

Review: You have to admire Ostgut Ton's ambition. While celebrating a decade in dance music with a compilation of exclusive, previously unheard music is now standard practice amongst leading underground labels, few would have the balls to release it with such a killer tracklisting as Zehn. Across the 30 tracks (count 'em!) you get a who's who of Berghain and Panorama Bar associates delivering a quite outstanding selection of left-of-centre techno and deep European house, with Marcel Dettmann, Boris, Virginia, Steffi, DVS1, Martyn, Tobias and Ben Klock all featuring. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the spacey electronics, heady textures and hypnotic rhythms of Function's "DX3 Analog Bass Seq", and the rush-inducing, string-laden house warmth of Matthew Styles' remix of Dinky's "Planes", to the picturesque intelligent techno of Doms & Deykers.

Review: There's a definite "no-nonsense" feel about this latest Tobias EP on Ostgut Ton. Simply titled Remixes, it sees a quartet of producers turn in typically locked-in re-interpretations of classic Tobias tracks. Matthew Jonson and The Mole join forces to turn "If" into a ten-minute chunk of broken tech-house - all bubbling electronic rhythms, relentlessly bumpy acid lines and crackly late night textures. Peter Van Hoesen takes a trip back to the early '90s with his spiraling, acid-flecked rework of "Cursor Item Only" (think Brown Album era Orbital, with a little more 4/4 techno grunt), before Blue Hour deliver a pulverizing version of "He Said" that's by far and away the EP's most bowel-bothering moment. It's no-holds-barred techno and then some, with one almighty sub-heavy bassline.

Review: Given his relatively high productivity, it's something of a surprise to find that A Series of Shocks is Tobias Freund's first solo album since 2011. Happily, this return to longtime home Ostgut Ton is impressive. Beginning with the beatless melodic pulse of the Steve Reich-influenced "Entire", Freund works his way through a range of clandestine techno compositions, touching on claustrophobic acid and intense late night thump ("Testcard", "Ya Po"), scratchy Chicago jack ("Instant"), deeper moods ("The Scheme of Things") and, most thrillingly, early '90s influenced intelligent techno. It's in these moments - "If" and tactile ambient breaks of "Cursor Item Only" - that A Series of Shocks really flies.

Review: When two of techno's most respected names collaborate, it's no surprise that the outcome is a trip through a primal, experimental landscape. "Physik 44A" is an abrasive, slamming track, its grimy acid bleeps and stop-start metallic rhythm pushing the listener down a punishing path. "Physik G321V" isn't quite as harsh, but it still sees Freund and Schmidt mess with conventions. A double bass rumbles away and gradually, the duo introduces a series of tones that get more and more intense as the arrangement progresses. Even the presence of a vocal buried deep in the mix cannot detract from "Physik G321V" being on a par with Schmidt's Acid Evolution album.

Review: Ostgut Ton ain't just house, techno and concrete, they're ambient, experimental, electro and musique concrete. This is the biggest compilation the label has released since they let Emika run wild in a closed Berghain and Panorama Bar to capture sounds of the humming club for 2010's Funf compilation. Barker & Baumecker and Fiedel saw releases on that compilation and now they contribute a track each to Ostgut Ton's abstract Various LP. B&B offer up some dubby frenetics in "Meiose" while Fiedel supplies some melodica and two step rhythms in "Grunewald2". Tobias' "Dark & Troubling Things" share a similar beatless murk to music from Canadian ambient artist Loscil, while Rolando's track "Neglected" is a stand out. DIN adds some minimally-charged Chicago house to the LP, while Virginia and new name Crushed Soul opt for something more electro. Dave Sumner then seals Various with a primitive "Golden Dawn" featuring Stefanie Parnow for something totally different to what Function fans are usually accustomed to.

Review: Moving between subtle alias variations, Tobias Freund has remained one of Berlin's lesser-celebrated house and techno craftsmen, beyond the inner circle of artists he advises on sound design at least. With this new two-tracker for Ostgut, you get treated to his no-nonsense approach to techno construction, not least on the wonderfully restrained "Freeze", which revolves around a looping bass synth phrase pitched at the dark heart of the night. "Perfect Sence" is a little sunnier in its disposition, with a lightly popping jack to the rhythm and cheery techno chords that lap out in a soothing contrast to the coy intensity of the flip.

Review: Backwards is the album that veteran producer and former Boney M studio bod Tobias Freund has been threatening to make for many years and the work that so many of his peers aspire to but will never reach. It is clear that a huge amount of thought has gone into this album. From the static crackle of album opener "Girts" to the trippy, Eno-esque ambience of "Voices Told Me To Do That", the devil is in the detail as new ideas and nuances loom at every bar. From the insistent stabby techno of "Party Town" and "Skippy" to the glorious Drexciyan electro of "The Key", Backwards is steeped in 30 years of electronic music history but never sounds dated.
