Review: For as long as any of us can remember, the Editorial label has led the way in multi-artist re-edit EPs. Their latest missive is, unsurprisingly, a bit of a Christmas cracker. Tomas Malo kicks things off with "Welcome Distraction", a filter disco-house revision of Escort's 2006 revivalist disco gem "Starlight", before label regulars Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee drop the ultra-positive, disco-with-bells-on fun of "Your House Tonite". Pontchatrain gets "Nasty" with a chunk of righteous, floor-friendly disco-rock/house fusion, Sunner Soul delivers some horn-totin' disco-funk brilliance, and P-Sol confirms a "Luv 2 Dance" by cutting up a familiar old disco staple. As for Mars, he heads for the end-of-night close dance via sensual R&B vocals, nods to P-funk and some superbly sumptuous synths.
Review: When quizzed about his debut full-length before a Juno Plus party last year, John Talabot paused for a minute. "It's not really house, more electronica - like a proper album," he finally remarked. It's an apt description. Fin is clearly rooted in house - and the kind of melody-driven, atmospheric tackle that the Barcelona-based producer excels at - but it's certainly not a dancefloor-focused set. There are off-kilter downtempo moments, slo-mo compositions and twisted beatscapes that recall the impossible-to-pigeonhole antics of Hyetal (circa "Broadcast"), Sepalcure and Instra:Mental. Then there's closer "So Will Be Now" (one of two collaborations with Pional), a near-genius chunk of future garage/deep acid house fusion that's so beautiful it almost hurts. As transformations go, Fin is stunning.
Review: Having previously appeared on Masterworks Music, Outernational and Whiskey Disco, Tomas Malo should be a familiar name to those who closely follow the house-centric side of the disco re-edit scene. Here, he pops up on Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint with a quartet of tasty treats. While the more '80s soul inclined loop jams "Like The Sun" and "Talk of Love" - the latter giving an aural nod to Tiger and Woods - are fine dancefloor cuts, it's the EP's other two tracks that really sparkle. "Slave" is a killer, metronomic rework of the band of the same name featuring a killer bassline, while opener "Body Magick" - our pick - boasts an attractive filter-heavy, French touch style disco-house swagger.
Review: Mexico's Tomas Malos has steadily risen amongst the ranks of the nu-disco scene thanks to a consistent string of warm and textured tunes. Here he's back with The Sunken Boat Party on Whiskey Disco. "Life Vest" features the distant refrains of a man overboard, swept away by deep, looping waves of slo-mo disco. Next, the saucy, string-laden grooves of "Castaway Three-Way" implies that he's survived the ordeal...and then some! Finally "Tuesday Booty" is a jovial beach party jam, implying he's been either rescued or enjoying no being found. Also Leftside Wobble thrown a 303 into the mix for a clubbier rework.
Review: Tomas Malo seems to be something of a rising star on the edits-not-edits scene. Here he brings his Tiger & Woods style cut-up goodness to '80s Child's Masterworks Music imprint. After delivering a deliciously tactile, loved-up interpretation of a wide-eyed '80s soul gem ("After The Rain"), he proceeds to turn Billy Ocean's "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)" into a hypnotic, filter-heavy chugger, and turns a synth boogie jam into a head-nodding house treat ("We All Love A Fair"). "Pay Cut" does the same with a low-slung disco-funk smasher, while the filtered breakdowns and massive drops on "Reachin' Out" should cause a commotion on the dancefloor.
Review: It's all about the future for Whiskey Disco, with the label presenting a selection of tunes by new talent on the "Future Lovers EP". It's an impressive selection too, featuring the electro-funk loops of Tomas Maio, electronica reworks of Brandi & Monica ("The Boy") and the arpeggiated electro-disco-funk of "Love Coming On".
Review: Having recently notched up a sixth year in business, Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint is in a celebratory mood - hence this all-action round-up of recent delights and unheard treats from the disco-loving label. Encompassing no less than 30 tunes, the collection giddily skips between warming beatdown disco (P-Sol's "Walter"), Mark E style slo-mo loop jams (Vigi's "I'll Be There") and glassy-eyed Balearic nu-disco (Picklejam's "Untitled Love"), before raising its hands skywards as the peak-time party-starters begin to appear thick and fast. Highights in this category include the vibrant jazz-house flex of Dexter Jones' "Swing Thing", the bustling boogie re-edit business of Monsieur Von Pratt's "Let's Dance" and the hearty disco-funk heaviness of Chewy Rubs' "Funky Bee Bop".
Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!
Review: Every 12 months, Fingerman's prolific Hot Digits imprint serves up an epic compilation entirely made up of exclusive, previously unheard re-edits, reworks and original productions. They're invariably excellent and this year's edition - the fifth in total - is even more epic than usual. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing amongst the dancefloor focused 32-track selection, from the throbbing Italo-disco style electronic sleaziness of Peza's "I Gotta Little Love" and the bouncy, acid-flecked cheeriness of Limpdisco's "Rush Hour", to the angular nu-disco heaviness of Andy Kidd's "The Dope Cube", the sparkling 80s boogie goodness of LUP INO's "Don't Stop Fooling" and and disco-funk-goes-house pump of Fingerman's "Family Ties". Keep an eye out too for rock solid rubs by Dr Packer, Chuggin Edits, Rayko and Andy Buchan.
Review: The first "Masterworks Legends" compilation saw label boss Danny Worrall giving digital debuts to a whole host of previously vinyl-only cuts. We're not sure whether he's taken the same approach this time round, but the quality of the material remains pleasingly high. Beginning with Dr Packer's hot-to-trot revision of Kiu D's Blaxploitation disco workout "Dynamite", Worrall offers up a swathe of hypnotic, disco-tinged house head-nodders (Ooft's "I Am Love" being a glassy-eyed standout), tasty '80s electrofunk revisions (Woodhead, The Silver Rider, Coutel, his own '80s Child project), thumping disco club cuts (Natasha Kitty Kat, Kiu D, James Rod, Ponchartrain) and sparkling nu-disco box jams (Gradient Logic). If you're looking for more tried-and-tested treats to pep up your sets, you should add this to your cart right now.
Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits label has now notched up 50 releases. To celebrate this landmark occasion, the man himself has selected 25 of his favourite cuts from the label's rapidly expanding back catalogue. As a showcase for everything that's good about the imprint, it does a bang up job, gleefully jogging between exotic mid-tempo disco and disco-funk (Frank Virgilio, Dr Packer, The funk District), slo-mo disco-acid (Fingerman's tremendous rework of B-Jam's "Sundog"), kaleidoscopic, reworked '80s boogie business (Casual Connection, Melon Bomb, the hard-tweaked filters and heady loop business of Chewy Rubs), tried-and-tested party-starters (Smashed Atoms, Get Down Edits remixing Stephen Richards) and giddy peak-time workouts (Shit Hot Soundsystem, Dave Gerrard, Thomas Maslo, Kiu D). As the old saying goes, this is all killer, no filler.
Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint has packed in a lot of releases over the past 12 months, as this expansive roundup of the label's second year in business proves. Featuring 27 tracks and a bonus mix by the South Coast dwelling label boss, there's naturally plenty to admire. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the rolling, head-nodding grooves of Eyeco M's "Keeping It To Myself", the killer proto-house throb of "Tonight" by Bad Barbie vs Evil Smarty, the sexy, string-drenched disco loveliness of P-Sol's "Can't You See", LTJ's trumpet-boasting funk bumper "Fat Thing", and the hard-wired, bass-heavy rework of Julia & Company's "Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba)" by Melon Bomb. It is, though, all pretty darn hot.
Review: The first installment of the Masterworks' Bag Of Tricks series went down a treat upon its summer release. Now it's the autumn and they've rustled up some more edits, 15 in fact, again featuring some big names on the nu-disco scene. This new comp will one and all swinging from the rafters from fireworks parties to Christmas knees-ups. Highlights include the Cathy Dennis-sound-alike cowbell jam "You Know How" by RobJamWeb, the swaggering guitar strut of "The Walk" by Silver Rider and Rabo & Snob's quirky, perky hiNRG pumper "Harry Rama".
Review: Having already carved a decent name for himself in the nu-disco universe, 80s Child (aka Danny Worrall), now turns his hand to running labels. Masterworks is his new imprint, and this eponymous compilation is its debut release. It's a total all-you-can-eat buffet of contemporary disco, featuring a whole host of familiar names. There are a whopping 23 tracks on here, some of the best include Tomas Malo's sultry grinder, "After The Rain", Yam Who?'s bouncy sunkissed disco joint "Find Out" and the digi-freestyle breaks of TV's "Love Situation".
