Review: As always with the Breakbeat Paradise Recordings crew, we are in for a treat as they unleash the full version of the second 'Badass Funk' compilation, jam-packed with colourful originals and vibrant sampling displays. Featuring eight exciting creations, the vibes stretch from the soulful sample slicing of 'Step Up' from The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP and disco-infused melodic switches of 'Dancing Mood' from Turntill, Merlin & Crosby, to the the more euphoric synth tops and bubbling drums of Ewan Hoozami's 'Rock More' and more relaxed grooves of BadboE's 'The Suicide Thing'. We also hear some tidy work from Morlack on 'Hydraulic Roof', alongside some oldschool finesse on Tosses' 'Same Old Funk'. The whole project oozes class, but our highlights have to include the scatty percussive switches and signalong melodies of B-Side and Kurnal MC's 'Each & Every Day', next to the funkadelic bass twangs of 'Funky Weekend' from Roast Beatz. Awesome stuff!
Review: When it comes to coming up trumps in the party-breaks scene Italy's Tosses wins the er, toss, every time. Here though he takes a little bit of break from the norm, presenting four less recognisable jams rather than the instant -hits he usually provides. "Adderall" may be generally used to treat hyperactivity, but here it's an utterly electro-boogie wild child. Elsewhere "Funky Fresh" riffs off classic 70s funk grooves, "To The River' is a bluesy, gospel-breaks reverie, and "Work Song" closes with some baddass vintage swing-samples.
Review: Italian maverick, Tosses, has graced many labels such as Tru Funk, Pig Balls and er, Total Wipes. Here he's sticking to what's done him well lately - the stability of Electric Cave. Here he provides three more of what he does best- funked-up mash-ups. The eponymous title track takes vintage James Brown and adds some tough go-go style drums underneath. Elsewhere the party vibes keep coming on the cheeky keyboard-pop of the breakbeat Doors hybrid "East Soul Project" and last but not least, the bluesy, hand-waver "Hand Clappin". Party music central.
Review: Chubby, glitch-riddled bass funk from Italian upstart Tosses: we kick off with RHCP-nodding "Instamind" where attention is paid to the stereo effects of the bass to great effect. "Humeboshi" continues the slinky bass feels while throwing in some well-known classic hip-hop hype shouts. Deeper into the collection we dive as the title track sees gutsy soul vocals gracing a gutter-minded bassline and heavily swung groove (and enjoying a glitch-powered remix from Sharmelfunk) Finally, as a rather generous free download, we get a Led Zep-frazzled twist on the Fugees classic remix of Cypress Hill. Boom biddy badman!
Review: Unhappy with the amount of re-edits and mash-ups in the nu-disco scene, Timewarp are doing something about it! That 'something' is the Lemon Sorbet series of mixes curated by the one and only Quincy Jointz. Featuring some of the finest original compositions, many until now unreleased, from leading nu funk artists. Highlights of volume 5 include the retro new jack urban beats of Jointz own Flashbaxx remix, Ashley Slater (Freak Power)'s low-slung and slinky Al Green cover "Stay Together" and the cool, slap-bass heavy, Latino disco jam "New York To Brasil" by DJ Colour C2. Who said originality was dead.
Review: As one half of dynamic duo Tosses & Varvez, Italian producer Alessandro Tosses has established himself as one of breakbeat's funkiest exponents. Here, he pops up on Breakbeat Paradise with his debut solo EP. Tosses' formula - chunky but swinging breakbeats, nuggety bass, hip-hop vocal samples and delicious funk guitars - is tailor-made for dancefloors, suggesting the four tracks here are rapidly going to become staples in breakbeat sets. Highlights include the '80s electro-influenced disco-breaks bounce of "Drop The Beat" and "3 Percent Of My Skills", a scratch-happy romp through growling electronic basslines and hustlin' funk breaks.
Review: Taken from his album The Plugger, "Don't Stop" comes with a clutch of remixes, each one guaranteed to set a different stage of your party alight. The McTwist remix is for that moment when warm up becomes the show down... The tempo is still low but the energy certainly isn't. Tosses & Varvez's remix is for about an hour later; the dancefloor is filling and you need a reliable groove that doesn't go too over the top, but keeps peeps bubbling. Naturally Jazz K Lippa's remix is for the peak time; upbeat and sprung with a rude bass undertone, this will raise more than a few whoops. Finally the Time To Funky remix. A conga-fuelled freakout, you could drop this at any point of the night and watch the chaos ensue. Listen to the man: do not stop!
Review: There are 16 different words to mean "Vengeance" according to this Italian duo. Funny that; all you need is one; damn funky! Sorry, that's two. Here are a whole load more... A deep, throbbing bass-driven rock/break hybrid, this addictive hip-swinger has got that an almost Laid Back feel but with heaps of added guitar. With a steady, head-nodding groove this struts with European class. For a slightly wonkier, more bass-addled version, head for the equally satisfying remix from Sharmelfunk. Fans of Adam Freeland's later work will definitely identify with this.
