Review: 19 releases and running since 2013... Mean Streets have always kept us on our toes with releases. But less is most definitely more as each dispatch has been a vital check-in. This walloping VA is no exception as bossman Trends and bestie Boylan are joined by the likes of Silas, Ironsoul, P Jam and J Beatz for a series of gully gutter chompers. Highlights include the operatic synthetics of Trends theatrical 'Mouth Shaker', the swampy stamps and swagger of Ironsoul's 'Mothra' and the eastern string hurricane of J Beatz 'Time Machine Riddim'. And that's the tip of the trilogy. Treating us mean, keeping us keen.

Review: Following on from a short hiatus away from releasing, we are super excited to see the return of Trends' Mean Streets label project, who unveil the second edition of their 'Trilogy' release series. If you are a fan of grime music in general, this isn't a tracklisting you can ignore as the likes of Boylan, D.O.K, P.Jam, and more all join Trends for eight tracks of grimey flavour. As always with Mean Streets drops, these aren't light and fluffy creations, these are instrumentals designed to cause a ruckus in the rave. Our particular favourites include the super skippy drum manoeuvres and colourful bass arrangements of 'Source' from Silas, alongside the raucous horn arrangements and lethal synthesis of Kromestar's 'Dancehall'. Amazing work from an incredible label!

Review: Project Allout are well known within both the grime and bass scenes for their outstanding compilation work, including their highly respected 'Krampus' series, which here enters its third season. We see a line up absolutely bristling with power as PAR regulars such as Deadbeat UK, Juzlo, Mr Dubz, JG, Dubzta and more all return with some seriously weighty contributions, along with newer faces such as Smodi, Rollsie and more. For us, the highlights include LJ & G1's super skippy 'Bullseye' original, alongside Sir Pixalot's corking melodic composition named 'Transparency'.

Review: Some thought the Devil walked into town to the theme tune of Eastenders. Others believe his theme was more like Nightrider. Turns out we were all wrong and Trends is here to correct us with the official "Devils Theme"; a rolling slab of theatrical gloom all bulbous and funky in the bottom end department. It's backed up by two more blood shedders... The stepper-slapped carnival banger "Wenty's Riddim" and the string-soaked rifle riddim "Submarine". Trust; this one goes deep.

Review: First and foremost, Trends should be introduced in relation to his Mean Streets label. He's running a tight operation there and, if you're into your bad-tempered dubstep, it's certainly a label to be tuned into. He makes frequent appearances elsewhere, however, and this new EP for the Hardrive imprint is him all over. "Blood Shed", for instance, is a natural creeper, the sort of big, bad and stomping bass machine-gun with a menacing injection of low hertz; "Red Stripe Riddim" is similarly twisted and cavernous in its approach, but the tempo is much speedier here, and it's as if the entire tune has been given a shot of adrenaline and, well, a few Red Stripes. "Oxygen" takes things down a peg, offering a sleazy, liquid-like bass rhythm that manages to fuse bass, strings and beats together with the upmost ease and flair.

Review: Bristol's bass supremacy is under threat from Sheffield's formidable Project Allout, who have literally gone all out by rounding up 21 heavyweight jams to prove it. With such heavy ammo who is foolish enough to try and resist? Not us, and if we really had to pick, some of our favourites would be Adam Mac's doomy, empty rainy street vibes on the haunting "Cold Side", the accelerated, pinged up, soulful 4 x 4 banger "Deep" by Deadbeat UK and the percussive dancehall infused synth bass monster, "Likkie Vibez" by Juzlo. The Allout revolution, don't fight it, feel it!

Review: Mean Street bossman Trends lays down two contrasting examples of his abilities with precision: "Pump It Up" is a straight up nod to UKG's boldest era with vicious two-steps and a powerful funk sample that will unite everyone in a five mile radius. "Virus", meanwhile, is an all-out emotional affair with rich strings, touching chord changes and a smoky halftime beat all tied together with a waspy acid sine. Stunning.

Uniting their many lengmen for a deep exploration of the pastures between bassline house, instrumental grime and the broader realms of bass music, every area is covered. Highlights include the eski angst of Chemist RNS' "Stare", the violin-snapping, post-dubstep darkness of Deadbeat UK's "Graveyard", the outrageous VIP muscles of Hoax and Dubzta's "Twilight Zone" and the sassy vocal flexery of Pavv's "You Got Me". This is just the tip of the bassline iceberg, though. Dig deep and grab your own lenger; there are enough here for everyone.

Review: An absolute leviathan of a compilation from Project Allout here, and it's just in time for some Christmas cheer from one of the fastest growing UK bass hubs in the game! A tad packed for us to go through it all, but this is guaranteed quality, especially given the fact that the release features plenty of label regulars, new faces and even some pretty incredible cameo appearances from the likes of Caspa, Deadbeat and Dubzta. Each puts in a fine performance, particularly Deadbeat with his "Street Life" cut, a glorious mashup of funky house breaks and wobbled low-end. Be sure to check the licks from Spooky, Mr Dubzta and Tuff Culture, too. Badman vibes and another stunner from Project Allout.

Review: Dark vibes abound as Trends and JLSXND7RS hook up with Flirta D for a sizzling slab of authentic grime. Leaning back on a savage bed of early 2000s bass and breakbeats, we switch and flick between halfsteps and full bodied drums as Flirta fires off a demonstrative don't-mess sermon. For added DJ creativity Oi! have also included a vocal-free narrative version. Nasty business.
