Badass Funk Vol 2
Various
Ewan Hoozami - "Rock More" - (3:48) 120 BPM
Review: As always with the Breakbeat Paradise Recordings crew, we are in for a treat as they unleash the full version of the second 'Badass Funk' compilation, jam-packed with colourful originals and vibrant sampling displays. Featuring eight exciting creations, the vibes stretch from the soulful sample slicing of 'Step Up' from The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP and disco-infused melodic switches of 'Dancing Mood' from Turntill, Merlin & Crosby, to the the more euphoric synth tops and bubbling drums of Ewan Hoozami's 'Rock More' and more relaxed grooves of BadboE's 'The Suicide Thing'. We also hear some tidy work from Morlack on 'Hydraulic Roof', alongside some oldschool finesse on Tosses' 'Same Old Funk'. The whole project oozes class, but our highlights have to include the scatty percussive switches and signalong melodies of B-Side and Kurnal MC's 'Each & Every Day', next to the funkadelic bass twangs of 'Funky Weekend' from Roast Beatz. Awesome stuff!

Lime Sorbet Vol 4 (Selected By Quincy Jointz)
Various
Tobe Tronic - "Breathe & Rock" - (5:28) 120 BPM
Globe By DJ Max & Gabb - "Lagos 1970" - (6:36) 120 BPM
Valique - "Morning Salad" - (5:54) 120 BPM
Timewarp Inc - "Hungry Funksters" - (5:02) 120 BPM
Review: German DJ/producer Quincy Jointz has been strutting his funky stuff behind the decks since 2003. He's struck up a close bond with Greece's Timewarp in particular, so much so in fact that he's back with his fourth mix album for them! "Lime Sorbet Vol IV" sees the guy condense 18 tracks into an hour-long mix, which is quite a journey indeed. The individual tracks are also included here in full, highlights of which include the Junkie XL-ish "Pray", the bouncy electro-pop meets retro rap of "Summertime (remix)" and the electro-funk-breaks of "Do You Want More Ah".

Wizard
Wizard - (3:40) 121 BPM Hot
Wizard (PulpFusion remix) - (4:13) 120 BPM
Wizard (Essex Groove remix) - (4:08) 120 BPM
Review: Seen Pig Balls' logo? They ain't talking about traditional footballs! They're rude, they're crude and they batter out serious funk gems. Like this selection from Swiss label natives Turntill & Merlin. "Wizard" pokes and jokes with a squelchy organ riff that's so cosy and embracing, it could be used for a kids TV show. Throw in an epic sorcerer's vocal sample midway and you've got yourself an authentic nu funk composition. Remix-wise Tosses & Varvez up the bass rudeness and stomp factor, PulpFusion goes for a swampier, Death In Vegas style breaker and Essex Groove end on a sweet n' shufflesome filtered disco flavour. One really ought to describe Wizard as 'spellbinding'.
