Step Change/Get Close
Step Change - (4:29) 57 BPM
Get Close - (5:27) 172 BPM Hot
Played by: Sikka
Review: It's been a few years since Ulterior Motive last delivered original material on Headz but these two ageless designs more than make up for lost time. "Step Change" is the assassin of the two: one click head shot business, this is a run for cover brock out with all the grit and aggression we need in these dark, paranoid times. "Get Close", meanwhile, proceeds to soften our edges. An unnerving, droning stepper that's restrained, but gradually built with measured menace, it's quintessential Ulterior Motive.

Chapters (feat Meyhem Lauren & Brotherman - Icicle remix) - (4:32) 57 BPM

Longshot (Xtrah remix) - (5:18) 172 BPM
Muted (feat James Sunderland - Mark System remix) - (6:39) 170 BPM
Review: Ulterior Motive make tracks that are built to last so it makes sense that the parts lend themselves to equally solid remixes. Every single version is a blinder here; Break takes "keep it Moving" to leaner, funkier pastures, Icicle technofies "Chapter" with steppy, halftime hurtism while Lenzman highlights the already soulful "Stay" with his own cosmic touch. Elsewhere Xtrah turns "Longshot" inside out (while paying respect to its instantly distinctive riff) Mark System turns in a seriously unique, clipped-bass twist on "Muted" and the guys themselves demolish "Inta-National" and rebuild it with nothing but melted gully. Masterful.

You're Next
You're Next - (6:04) 176 BPM
Music City - (5:02) 172 BPM Hot
Review: "You're Next" is one you can't afford to sleep on. Taking charge is a filthy, majorly minimal bassline that's hard and loose, while natural-sounding breaks roll with ease - and the crack of that snare! On the other side of the Ulterior Motive agenda is "Music City", a raunchy roller tacked into place by a big ol' funky bassline and a ton of cheeky attitude. If "You're Next" is a badman, "Music City" is the pair of streetwise '70s cops on its tail.

Review: Since signing Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive to his Metalheadz imprint last year, Goldie has acted as a kind of mentor, supervising the recording of this debut album. In many ways, it makes a lot of sense; Ulterior Motive's brand of jungle-influenced drum and bass no doubt appeals to the producer-turned-celebrity's rave sensibilities. The Fourth Wall is a confident and engaging debut, with spangling, piano-laden rave moments - see the early '90s revivalism of "Tape Pack" - nestling side by side with dark, twisted rollers and deeper, more experimental fare. It's this latter strand - and most particularly the James Sutherland collaboration "Muted" - that makes The Fourth Wall such an impressive debut.

The Fourth Wall (Album Sampler)
Tape Pack - (5:49) 172 BPM Hot
Muted (feat James Sunderland) - (5:09) 170 BPM
Review: Metalheadz South Coast correspondents Ulterior Motive are gearing up to unleash their debut LP The Fourth Wall, and it's about time too! Despite being only two tracks deep, this sampler does well to show the forthcoming album's broadest range and will whet appetites for The Fourth Wall. "Tape Pak" is an instant love letter to the early 90s rave foundations, but written by pen and paper from 2039. "Muted", meanwhile, is wholly contemporary with its deep spacious groove, techno-like attitude and dBridge-style vocals from James Sutherland.

MIR
MIR - (5:13) 172 BPM Hot
Given Contact - (5:51) 172 BPM
Review: And now for something completely different. Ulterior Motive offer up the goods for Metalheadz, picking apart the bones of the D&B releases that have gone before them this year to create the noisiest, most industrial minimal track in existence. Paring back the instrumentation leaves "MIR" with just killer drums, and rolling bass holding together nightmarishly stressy pads and a punchy sample repeating our only instruction: "Let it roll." For a fix of ungodly heaviness, "Given Contact" is the ultimate combination of on-point production with behemoth-shaped bass, destroying speakers in its wake.

Right Here/The Elephant Tune
Right Here - (6:01) 172 BPM Hot
The Elephant Tune - (5:36) 188 BPM
Review: The unstoppable Ulterior Motive boys bring the UK scene to the forefront again with two dangerously dark releases from the Mr Hyde side of their repertoire. "Right Here" twins sweet female vocals with erratic breaks on the verge of complete incomprehension, but never falling over that mark, instead rolling hard and fast with nasty bass providing the melody and the backbone. "Elephant Tune" on the other hand is large and loping, sawing through tinny hi-hats with chunky bass and a formidable dubstep swagger that belies their drum and bass preferences. Why the Elephant? We presume because it's big, heavy and you'll never forget it.

The Genesis EP
Data - "Compassion" - (6:23) 175 BPM Hot
Ulterior Motive & FD - "All That We Are" - (7:14) 172 BPM
Kiat - "Feeder" - (6:08) 172 BPM
Mikal - "Say Nothing" - (5:57)
Review: A tidy three track EP from the Metalheadz camp, The Genesis EP kicks off with Horizon's regular Data going in on the deep, minimal vibes with ticking beats, impassioned breathy vocal and tense, metallic chimes. Bournemouth duo Ulterior Motive team up with old friend and Critical hot shot FD for "All That We Are", combining their considerable skills for this stripped back, minimal/tech roller, with crisp breaks and a foreboding undertone. Finishing up with "Feeder" - incidentally Kiat's debut on Metalheadz - it's over and out on an experimental tip, with a bleepy melody bubbling over curious SFX and deep, murmuring b-line below. One for the headz.
