Disco Funkin' Vol 1 (Curated By Shaka Loves You)
Various / Shaka Loves You
Shaka Loves You - "Livin' For Tonight" (feat NattySpeaks & Profit - VIP club dub) - (3:42) 108 BPM
Review: Glasgow's Shaka Loves You has rightly earned a reputation as disco-centric duo on the rise. Because of this, it's little surprise to see them at the controls on Bomb Strikes' first foray into the disco-focused compilation market. The Scottish pair have naturally pulled out all the stops for the occasion, selecting 20 hot-to-trot cuts that aptly blur the boundaries between disco, funk, nu-disco, electro and boogie. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, the hazy, sun-kissed soul of Lack of Afro's "Back To The Day", the thickset P-funk revivalism of Kraak & Smaak's "Dynamite" and the rubbery disco-house-meets-UK soul flex of the Reflex's remix of Omar's "Vicky's Tune". Throw in a tasty selection of the pair's productions and you have a suitably strong collection.

Review: French funk fanatics Soulab Records released the first instalment of this comp series back in March. Since then we've been doing some serious cold soul turkey, so we're ecstatic to have a new instalment. Again they've kept it in the musical family with all their regular artists present and correct. There's disco funk from Uptown Funk Empire, some familiar retro grooves from Slow Motion Replay and acoustic realness from Weeland & The Urban Soul Collective.

Review: French label Soulab are always bestowing us with some variant of funk and in some guise or other, not least with their plethora of excellent compilations. However, we haven't had an installment in this particular series for a year and a half. Thankfully that's now been addressed and a whole host of label regulars like Uraz Kurt, Dan Electro, Slow Motion Replay and Uptown Funk Empire have all contributed more mellow productions from their vaults to Volume 3.

Review: France's Soulab Records are back with yet another compilation of soul-heavy grooves, and considering that these types of comps are exactly what they do best, it ain't no bad thing either. All the usual label affiliated suspects are here and over the course of the 13-strong tracklist we get acoustic ragtime (Weeland & The Urban Soul Collective's "Josephine's Lament"), retro 60s organ wig-outs (Slow Motion Replay's "Ragged Mustang"), barbershop harmonising (Allen Hoist's "The Closer I Get To You") and raw, thundering gospel (Dan Electro's "Let Them Come").

Leroy Burgess - "It's The Weekend" - (5:04) 107 BPM
Review: France's Soulab label is largely known for it's jazzy, soulful sounds. Here though, it's all about the lazy, hazy sounds of the 70s & 80s. Over 13 tracks we get taken on an analogue party heavily indebted to the likes of Roger Troutman & Shalamar. The mellow g-funk of Uptown Funk Empire's "Take You Out" starts things lying down, before the electro-soul of Fatback 4Way's "Sweet Summer Daze" livens things up. From then on we get classic boogie (Cool Million "Lift Me Up") , retro pop (Confection "Lift Me Up") and even flute-core (Uptown Funk Empire "Boogie").
