5 Years Of Masterworks Music

Coutel - "This Is Love" - (6:41) 95 BPM
Rare Cuts - "Holding On" - (5:16) 94 BPM
Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!

The Remix Sessions Vol 1
AUditors DOmination - "Dreaming Of Zion" (Timewarp Inc remix) - (4:53) 90 BPM
Fab Samperi - "Everyman" (feat John Turrell - Timewarp Inc remix) - (4:51) 95 BPM
Review: Here we have Timewarp Inc, the in-house production team at Athenian funk/nu-disco label Timewarp, and they've decided to delve into their mighty back catalogue and well, remix it. Hence, "The Remix Session Vol 1" - a collection boasting 14 prime cuts including the moodily hypnotic funk loops of "Anti Pop Song" by Ancient Astronauts, the forlorn Two Tone vibes of "Smile On Your Face" and the machine-like breaky funk goes synthy disco sizzler "Da Gypsy Groove" by Leon.

Champa & Calagad 13 - "Mal Final" (rare version) - (3:29) 95 BPM
JazzKlipa - "Music Is Mine & Yours" (feat Manina) - (4:30) 95 BPM
Review: German DJ/producer Quincy Jointz has been strutting his funky stuff behind the decks since 2003. He's struck up a close bond with Greece's Timewarp in particular, so much so in fact that he's back with his fourth mix album for them! "Lime Sorbet Vol IV" sees the guy condense 18 tracks into an hour-long mix, which is quite a journey indeed. The individual tracks are also included here in full, highlights of which include the Junkie XL-ish "Pray", the bouncy electro-pop meets retro rap of "Summertime (remix)" and the electro-funk-breaks of "Do You Want More Ah".

Fresh Out The Box
Various
The Snugs - "Trying" (Tal M Klein remix) - (3:20) 90 BPM
Review: Compiled by one of the lynchpins of the British funk scene, Fresh Out The Box is a 13 track collection of some original and remixed rarities. As well as being in charge of the Jazz Cafe, Adrian Gibson also runs his Freestyle label in order to break new talent in the world of jazz, funk, soul and Latin music. This latest collection is stuffed to the gills with quality spanning all those genres and more.

Funk fans will immediately revel in the cover of The Blackbyrds classic "Rock Creek Park" by Beggar & Co which stays faithful to the glorious original whilst also adding some club-friendly kicks and percussion. On a more organic live funk tip, Lack of Afro's "I Can?t Dance With You" delivers plenty of Hammond-driven thrills and some huge drums to boot. The Jezebel Sextet's "Mr Hot Pants" is another nu-funk bomb, with brass spilling out all over the track yet all held together with some precision bass and drums.

Bennson's remix of "No I Can Do" however is more produced and sounds like prime 80's boogie, in a similar vein to Junior or Jocelyn Brown. The Mo? Horizons mix of "Life Is A Trip" also shows off their studio skills, looping parts of Gypsy Brown?s original and adding some bouncy broken beats into the fun. Mop Mop also does wonders with Valique's "Where Is The Love", building an intriguing mood with some vibes and thumb-pianos before dropping the beats and vocals for maximum impact.
