Review: Midnight Riot do their bit to address the much-discussed gender imbalance in dance music with a 25-track collection featuring an almost entirely female line-up (though a few possessors of Y-chromosomes do sneak in as collaborators). With big names like Kathy Brown, DJ Paulette, Rowetta, Caron Wheeler, Sulene Fleming and Natasha Kitty Katt nestling up alongside a host of more up-and-coming artists, the quality standard is high throughout, with the musical emphasis largely on good-time, Saturday night house and disco vibes, though there a few more gently paced moments - notably in the form of covers of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' and Sade's 'Sweetest Taboo' - while Paulette & Massey serve up a pleasing dose of acid on 'Sheroes'.

Review: Laurent Garnier, Scan X, and Oliver Way's COD3 QR label remains fresh as ever with a new various artist release that brings eleven hand picked cuts from the likes of Bel Air Ltd., Tal Fussman and Jules Wells to Alex Troniq, Fanu, Voltaire, Carlos Nilmmns and Inner Ray! Lead cut "City Lights" kicks off with some deep and melancholic bassline house next to some moody techno reminiscent of early Ben Klock in "10247". "The Clap" delivers some footwork inspirations next to some spookier electro wares in "Neophile" - banging. "Pisecean" gets all breakbeat and new age in the mix alongside some warehouse techno in "Regular Disturbances" alongside some melodic 'Mathew Johnson' inspired sounds in "Old Paris". Closing out the EP is "What" - a British Murder Boys-esque slice of Middle Eastern themed gothic EBM.

Review: Following the release of a fine solo EP from Lovanda, Iner's DOBRO label returns to the multi-artist EP blueprint on which it built its' reputation. It's a typically strong offering all told, with no less than six cuts on offer. Check first Classonix's 'Samba Collective', a brilliantly jaunty, percussive, and sun-soaked slab of Summery excellence, before turning your attention to the sample-heavy Afro-house of Anton Mo ('African Mania'), and the low-slung, low-tempo headiness of 'Son 3' by Lavrutz. Elsewhere, classic US deep house vibes are provided by Redgz Franklin and UC Beatz ('For The Music'), Tiptoes reaches for driving beats, woozy chords and weighty sub-bass ('Baby Ting'), and Triem re-invents 'French Touch' house for the 21st century ('Saghalian Love').

Review: IRMA are among the longest-running labels in the game - there was a time, in the early 90s, when this writer would buy any vinyl bearing their logo without even hearing it first - but they've excelled even their own high standards with this superb collection, which embraces a range of jazz- and funk-informed styles and is programmed to perfection. The album starts out in dancefloor-friendly jazz-funk territory, gets closer and closer to straight-up jazz and jazz-fusion in the mid-section, then ventures into slightly more experimental and/or electronic pastures as it nears its close. The quality meter's in the red throughout, making picking standouts almost redundant, but if pushed then opener 'P-Lainz' and Papik & Fly Bruna's 'Don't Ever Let It Go' are particularly deserving of your attention.

Review: Spanish label Play Pal Music continues to deliver rock-solid, compilation style outings via the excellent 'Pals' series, which here reaches its eighth instalment via an eight-track blend of "robotic, exotic, hypnotic and sinister grooves". Rising star Thomass Jackson kicks things off via the guttural, eccentric house throb of 'Sexual Camel', before AckerMan delivers the acid-smothered peak-time dark disco exotica of 'Natura', and Martin Martin & Cali Burton join forces on Arabic-influenced new wave workout 'Weyno'. Elsewhere, we get more pulsating, arpeggio-driven dancefloor moodiness courtesy of Mmylo ('The Curve'), Hardway Brothers style psychedelic chug (Gunce Aci), Balearic niceness (Manner of Speaking), EBM-inspired melancholic muscularity (Sid Le Rock) and lo-fi, synth-laden melodiousness (Beartrax).

Review: Over the course of 2023, there is no denying that Incurzion Audio were one of the most impressive imprints out there, with a fantastic focus on unveiling a wide range of new dubstep talent. This time around, they commence the year with a heavyweight compilation drop, inviting 30 artists inside for the fourth edition of their 'We Are Incurzion' series. From the epic soundscaping of Gendo's 'Marble Elephant' to the emotive synth melodies of Lokal's 'Flatline' and more minimal percussive clicks of 'Ballistic' from Undercentrum & UMBRA, we get a fantastic array of electronic sounds to enjoy. For us, the two standouts include both the stomach-turning sub crunches of RWB's 'Vask Des Na' and of course the mind-melting acidity of Eth:er's monstrous 'Requiem' original. Awesome work across the board!

Review: Jalapeno bring us their latest V/A collection rounding up the cream of the label's recent releases. The line-up features all the usual suspects (The Allergies, Ivo FitzRoy, Flevans, Smoove & Turrell and label bosses Skeewiff) as well as a handful of newer names, and if you're a fan of the label's trademark blend of funk, soul, breaks and hip-hop - with the emphasis this time out firmly on the soul side - then it's hard to see how you'd end up dissatisfied here. Standouts for yours truly include Wolfgang Valbrun's 'Cyclone', with its big, cavernous production redolent of 60s/northern soul, and Mr Doris & D-Funk's rapped homage to UK childhood 'Back In The Day', but you'll doubtless find your own favourites...

OK, so the 'classics' in question all come from the archives of his sun-soaked, chill out-inspired DSPPR label, but there's no denying the quality of the warming, mostly slow-motion music on show. Check first the gorgeous slow-motion Balearic boogie of Antonio Prosper's 'Electro Balear', before admiring the dubbed-out Balearic pop exotica of Coyoye & Florecer's 'The Biggest', the dubby Balearic house shuffle of Coco Steel & Lovebomb's 'La Isla', the head-nodding Mediterranean hip-hop of Sadeedo's 'Asafeer Portixol' and the almost overwhelming beauty of LOVA's 'Madre Padre (To The End Edit)'.

Review: It's a First World Problem, but pity the poor reviewer who has to find something new to say about a Music For Dreams compilation: with Bager's label now in the game for well over 20 years, and with the 'Music For Mindfulness' series itself reaching its seventh instalment, you really should know what you're getting by now! Still, it's a formula that works - clearly, or they wouldn't be into their third decade - and if you're a fan of the label's mix of ambient, Balearic and downtempo vibes then 'Music For Mindfulness Vol 7' should more than satisfy, with some of the more notable tracks including the fragile beauty of Valentin Huedo's 'Wonderful Piano', Hess Is More's haunting, indie/psych-tinged 'You & Me & Them' and Willie Graff & Darren Eboli's dubby 'Pink Hotel'.

Review: Platform 23 reunites once more with Vox Man Records to dig deep into their archives and shine a new light on. In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.

This is the #tropicaldub selection, for which you can essentially read 'reggae and dub' as label regulars like Prosper & Stabfinger, DJ Laurel, Vito Lalinga, Funky Destination and of course head honcho Timewarp Inc step up to pay tribute to the sound of JA - while still allowing, as with the #funk volume, plenty of scope for fusions with other styles, be they Latin (see DJ Laurel's 'Sambafunk'), Afro (see Lalinga's 'Vrye Denke') or hip-hop and breaks (see P&S's 'Popping The Clutch'), not to mention one fine slab of straight-up funk (Zamali's 'Kings & Queens') and, in the form of 'Simoon', the obligatory weirded-out closer...

Review: Twenty-five years is a long time in any field. In the fast-moving world of electronic music, it's practically an eternity. That Turbo has managed not just to last that long but also to remain fresh says a lot about Tiga's immaculate A&Ring. On Turbo 25, we see the form this takes. There's "You So Pretty", his cheeky electro collaboration with long-time Turbo collaborator Jori Hulkkonen. Audion and Seth Troxler also celebrate the landmark anniversary with the searing techno of "Hate", while The Hacker goes down the industrial route with the slamming "Forcefield". Tiga continues to flirt with pop with the Soulwax edit of "Woke". However, the fact that he has commissioned Gesloten Cirkel of Murder Capital fame to rework "Easy" means he remains as connected as ever with techno and electro's underground. Here's to the next quarter century.

For the uninitiated, it's perhaps worth stressing the 'freestyle' part of the title: no mere slavish pastiches of 70s-style funk, the 16 tracks here expand that original blueprint to encompass influences from hip-hop, house, breaks, Afrobeat, reggae and jazz. Highlights for this reviewer include the stuttered jazz-hop of Djazz.OrgOnite's 'Yo Sco', Umbo's fast and furious 'Foolin' Around' and label boss Timewarp Inc's own 'Not Bad Disco' - ironically one the album's most trad-style offerings - but you'll find your own for sure.

Review: Italian label Mondo Groove (part of the Cinedelic family) bring us a six-track collection of obscure female-vocalled cuts from early 80s Italy, with tracks ranging from the gloriously camp Italo-disco of Gioia's "No Secrets" to the straight-up synth-pop of Patrizia Pellegrino's "Bandito" via the cod calypso of Laura Bitto?s "Trinidad" and the Laura Branningan/Pat Benatar-isms of Virna Anderson's "Life Sound". Those with a strong aversion to gorgonzola and mozzarella should probably steer clear but if you can handle the Eurovision-ish aftertaste then Simona Gay's "This Night" has a certain wry charm.

Review: Taking their name from a 1957 Sun-Ra album, Super-Sonic Jazz are an Amsterdam-based record label and events organisation, built to support "exciting and innovative artists who move within the universe of jazz". Closely linked with the city's legendary Paradiso venue, here they present the latest in a series of EPs showcasing the work of associated artists. Cuts range from the moody, cinematic "June Hill" by Radiohop, via melancholy soul-jazz from Tallulah Rose, to abstract bruk-isms from Sitkamer and Quanza, before the EP's completed by what to these ears is the clear stand-out, fast and furious jazz-dancer "Dragons Dance" by Imaginarium.

Review: It's no secret that the team at Exit have a legendary catalogue, which they have decided to celebrate for their 100th official drop. This Part One of the "EXIT100" compilation series features some serious heavyweights, including Itoa, Dolenz, Sertone & Addison Groove to name a few. The pure range that we get is also awesome to take in, from Fixate's stunning drum production work in "Dead End", to the skippy, juke-inspired skips of "Tell Me Something" from Sun People and the acidic adventure we are taken on in Borderlandstate_the Best Kisser In L.a.'s "Minimal Input". We couldn?t round off without discussing "Wasted" however, as Dub Phizix dive down a truly unique avenue for them, unveiling a mind-melting soundscape that would leave a tear in the eye of the staunchest electronic music fan. Top quality stuff!

Review: For a full 20 years, Tobias Kirmayer's Tramp label have been serving up a mix of reissues and fresh material spanning the worlds of funk, soul, jazz, Afrobeat and folk, with much of their output coming on ultra-limited seven-inch vinyl. Thankfully, though, much of it also gets gathered up on digital collections such as this latest offering, which brings together gems as diverse as The Echomen's 'Talk Is Cheap' (a cert for the Mod floors), Dianne Elliott's Dusty-esque 'The Ring', the soulful blues of Van Buren's 'Bronco Queen' from 1983 ,the wigged-out soul-jazz of Frederic Raboid Crew's 'Open House', Earl Turner's late 70s funk-meets-boogie jam 'S'Port City Rock', the brass-tastic jazz of New Lucky Seven's 'Woodhead' and, last but not least, a couple of doses of Afrobeat courtesy of contemporary torch-bearers The KutiMangoes.

Review: Dave Lee's Z Records bring us a 15-track, Ibiza-themed collection that, just like last year's offering, features a mixture of recent releases (such as recent Akabu single 'Highways', presented here in Cody Currie Remix form) and favourites from days gone by. In the latter camp, Raven Maize's 'The Real Life' gets a 2023 reworking courtesy of David Penn and The Sunburst Band's classic 'Until The End Of Time' is also treated to a 2023 Remaster, while Micky More & Andy Tee's Piano Mix of Doug Willis's 'Music Than Speaks Louder Than Words' from 2011 dropped late last year and Z Factor's 'Gotta Keep Pushing' returns in the less-played Salt City Orchestra Remix, which featured on the 1998 FFRR 12-inch but not the original 1996 Z release.

Review: Arriving just in time for the summer season, Hot Digits delivers a compilation that is tailor made to soundtrack lazy, hazy days. Even Funkier's "Feel So Good Inside" is an irresistible, funk-fuelled disco groove, while Ben Jamin's "Handle" inhabits a similar space. Soaked in wailing guitar and soulful vocals, it's a wonderfully infectious track. Both Andy Buchan and P-Sol raise the tempo with string-filled disco workouts, while Fray Bentos' "Danced To Death" offers a more electronic take on this sound. The compilation does veer towards house on occasion - most impressively with the subtle drum builds and chord progressions on Down Under Disco's "On My Mind". In the main though, Year Nine impresses most when it draws on disco and funk influences, such as the raucous party jam that is label owner Fingerman's collaboration with Chewy Rubs, "Block Party Bad Boy".

Review: After 13 years, Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990's Night Slugs label has amassed a vast catalogue of classic cuts. It's ripe for remixing, and they've duly delivered - with a little help from a whole heap of talented artists - on a 23-track set that may turn out to be one of the compilations of 2023. In keeping with the label's forward-thinking, hard-to-pigeonhole approach, there are all sorts of fine fusions and genre-bending revisions on show, as well as plenty of bona fide peak-time killers. Highlights include DJ Polo and NKC's bouncy, bass-heavy and stab-happy revision of 'Melba's Call' by Bok Bok, Scratcha DVA's punishing, speaker-bothering rework of Girl Unit's 'IRL', a redlined, percussion-heavy OSSX tweak of L-Vis 1990's 'Video Drone' and a thrillingly hectic, sweat-soaked, rave-igniting Bored Lord version of Helix's 'Drum Track'.

Review: Next Level Dubstep have delivered a delightful box of weaponry with this latest compilation, unloading seven original steppers from some of the seasons heaviest hitters. We open up with the crunchy reverberations of 'Tribez', a dizzying display from Noclu, which then gives way to both the squelching supremacy of Bukez Finezt's 'French Hideaway' and the system-busting sub bulges of 'Infinity Chamber' from the ever-ready Roklem & Sebalo. Next up, the choppy synth slaps of Mikrodot's 'Unconscious Mind' then awaken, followed in their slumberous state by 'Chatter' a convulsing box of distorted rhythm and urgent string work. Finally, 3WA arrives with a typically dizzying design on 'Consciousness', with the lethal synthetics and breaks-like drum crunches of Wolf'd's 'Run!' closing off the project with a serious smash.

The latest release emphasises the importance of eclecticism, open-mindedness, and non-conformity in the genre, featuring tracks across a variety of sub-genres. The focus is solely on the music, free from any biases or expectations. We were really feeling Artist Code 414C4D's slinky and hypnotic "El Dia De La Pantera", the moody and epic dancefloor drama of Artist Code 4D422E on "Liquid Room" as well as the deep late night mood music of Artist Code 414C46 & Artist Code 524F43's "In Da Hood" (extended mix), the dystopian electro battle beats of Artist Code 4D5452 on "Verum Verbum" and the spiritual life music of Artist Code 505241's "Get A Life Back".

Review: Like its predecessor, 'Urban Grooves 2' takes a deep dive into the vast vaults of IRMA Records, resurfacing with a 30-track set of "urban funk breaks dub hip-hop beats". In practice, that means a mix of head-nodding, slow-motion disco-funk (see the various contributions by hypno-disco king LTJ Xperience), rubbery jazz-funk-goes-dub disco workouts (Vito Lalinga), toe-tapping, sample-heavy instrumental hip-hop (Ice One), Latin-flecked downtempo grooves (Lo Greco Bros and Flow Bop), sumptuous neo-soul (Orange Factory), and wah-wah guitar sporting deep funk (The Smoke Orchestra). Equal parts club-ready and sofa-friendly, 'Urban Grooves 2' is a uniformly entertaining and life-affirming compilation.

Review: Ed Cartwright and Leon Oakey's first collaborative compilation is one of the few we've come across to eschew a narrow focus on one genre or style in favour of celebrating an under-documented era, namely UK dance music's eclectic, impossible to pigeonhole 'post-rave' period in the mid 1990s. Given that lots of great music was released then, it's a great idea. The tracklist boasts a lot of very good cuts, including a near impossible to find Richard D James oddity (as Strider B), a couple of killer Richard H Kirk-related numbers, some stretched-out, acid-fired early morning psychedelia (Thunderhead The Word By Eden), classic IDM gems (Xeper, the Black Dog), a dash of dubby, post-bleep brilliance (Liquid Son, Rotor) and a clutch of hybrid deep house/tech-house tracks (Max, Fretless AZM, Herbert).

Review: On part two of the label's 13th anniversary compilation series, Local Talk bosses Tooli and Mad Mats serve up nine more previously unheard cuts from imprint artists and invited guests. As you'd expect given Local Talk's impressive track record, there's not a duffer in sight. After opening with a gorgeously warm, breezy and summery chunk of jazz-flecked electronic house by Wipe The Needle ('Light Years Away'), we're treated to an inspired mixture of sweaty, upbeat Latin jazz/house fusion (James L'Estrange Orchestra), speaker-bothering low-end wobblers (Damon Frost's accurately titled analogue jam, 'Dutty House'), piano-laden classic house excellence (Glenn Davis), dancefloor dub (Riddim Research Lab), Italian dream house revivalism (Aurelius), and much more besides.

Review: Faze Action Records bring us what's technically a V/A comp, though only one track - 'Les Vacances...' by Brazilian veteran Micky Milan - has actually come out of anyone's studio other than Robin Lee's, be that with brother Simon as Faze Action or in solo mode as Andromeda Orchestra/Rudy's Midnight Machine. Still, that does at least ensure a certain consistency in both tone and quality as the album moves inexorably from the near-ambient 'Crystal Dragonfly' and the hazy, lazy 'Floating World', via the phat 'n' squelchy 'Kano Line Dance', to the (early/proto) house-isms of 'Reach Backless' and 'Magic Touch', before 'Mangwana' (feat Zeke Manyika) plays us out on an energetic, uplifting note.

Review: The Let's Play House White label is up and running with this disco-not-disco collaborative EP, and we have to say that we're digging each one of these five floor-melters. Badman Jacques Renault sets the gears in motion with the house-powered "Where Do We Go", all pianos and rolling beats, followed by Mr Guy and the slow, sample-heavy chugger called "Luv Magic" - check that bass! Jesse Rudoy leans to an ore string-led disco swagger with "What U Do", "Just Give Me Joy" by Elvin Tibideux is a heavy disco slinger with a groove that you could just leave on repeat for eternity, and Private Panther's "Desire" is the perfect blend between old and new thanks to its dusty house beats and winding guitar loops. Recommended and not to be underestimated!

Review: Act of Sedition's popular 'Perfect Pitch' compilation series returns for a third innings, this time offering up "loose grooves for lazy days". In practice, that means re-edits and light-touch reworks of laidback soul, disco and boogie gems, some with subtle new instrumental touches. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the locked-in, delay-laden dub disco chug of 'Olhidos Coloridos' by Ben Jamin, and the breezy, morning-fresh AOR soul of Bully Boy's 'Baltimore (Refix)', to the languid but floor-friendly rework of a stone cold classic that is Mikeandtess's 'Preacher', and the carnival-ready summer samba shuffle of 'Bossa Soul (Timmy 7's Edit)' by Sucka Productions. Throw in slightly more up-tempo contributions from heavyweights DJ Steef, Lego Edit and Frank Argrario, and you have another must-check set of reworks.

Review: The Hotflush name and brand has always been synonymous with futuristic flavour, making this exceptional collection a perfect way to celebrate their success over the years, taking the title 'Post Whatstep?'. The project takes a serious deep-dive into the concept of thinking outside the box, whilst still maintaining genre ties to garage, dubstep and techno throughout. The roster involved is pretty outstanding, with household names such as Scuba, Mount Kimbie, TRG, Dub U and Untold all providing seriously high quality inclusions. There are definitely a few stand out features, with the sweeping synthetic layers of 'Don't You' from George Fitzgerald being an immediate point of interest, next to the heavily sidechained atmospherics of Sepalcure's 'Love Pressure' and the more old school garage chops of Or:la's 'UK Lonely' also setting a high standard. Exceptional work, as we have come to expect from such a critical UK label voice.

Review: Milan's Record Kicks have been championing contemporary soul and funk since way back in 2003, and now they celebrate their 20th anniversary with the release of a collection that brings together nine sought-after tracks from their back catalogue and 11 brand new cuts. Featuring contributions from well-known artists like New Mastersounds, Calibro 35 and Tamiko Jones as well as some more underground names, there's no room to go into every track but most of what's here operates in the arena known variously as 'neo' or 'new old' soul while there's room, too, for rawer funk cuts like Martha High's 'Answer To Mother Popcorn' and Calibro 35's 'Stainless Steel', as well as some surprise covers - not least a ska'd-up take on Britney's 'Toxic'.

Fittingly, band co-founder Chris Todd steps up first as Hot Toddy with 'Barry and the Mouse', a deliciously glassy-eyed Balearic shuffler shot through with nods to loved-up instrumental synth-pop and immersive nu-disco, before the duo offers up with laidback, sun-splashed warmth of A Certain Ratio's 'Atmosphere Sings'. Drifting, sunrise-ready motifs and tactile textures are the order of the day on Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi's gently funky cosmic disco number 'Neono', while Sarah Bates' 'All About That' is like a cosmic disco and Balearic pop head's take on 'Tango in the Night'-era Fleetwood Mac.

Review: Ritmo Fatale is a Toulouse based label run by Kendal Mulla & Paul Guglielmi with the slogan 'No Past, No Present, No Future'. The second installment in their various artist series titled Epifania features Mouissie's powerful trance exploration "Into Your Trap" that'll have you reaching for the lasers, Zaatar's mid '90s EBM muscle flexed well on "Abiad Al Layali" as well as Paladin's neon-lit Italo number "Argorythm" - indeed proving its a diverse affair. Closing it out is the afterhours sunrise breaks of Cosmic G's "Somehow It's Different Now" which is pure ecstasy.

Review: You can tell the age of a horse by counting its teeth, the age of a tree by counting its rings, and the age of a dance music reviewer by counting how many 'Cafe Del Mar' comps are stored away in his/her/their memory banks! That sadly makes this writer about 250 years old, but thankfully the series has recently hit a serious run of form and this latest volume is a delight from start to finish, kicking off as it does in dubwise territory before veering briefly into lo-fi hip-hop and then bringing the classic-style Balearic vibes. With detours into fluffy pop, pointless ambience or self-indulgent neo-classicism conspicuous by their absence, it's everything that's good about the Ibiza sundown experience distilled into two hours of chilled listening pleasure.

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, there's not much information to be found online about this near two-hour, 26-track collection from compilation specialists Electro Babes. What we can tell you is that it's an eclectic, boundary-blurring affair that explores the more downtempo and Balearic end of the musical spectrum before giddily charging towards the dancefloor as the set progresses. Within that wide remit, there's plenty to enjoy, from the deep, downtempo jazz of 'Gullivers' by Yan Gillis, the slow-motion trip-hop/dub-pop of Elli Uda's 'To Find Yourself' and the bleep-goes-new beat-pop flex of Gerald Peklar's 'Find a Way (US Mix)', to the trance-inducing Euro-techno stomp of Membran 66's 'Rounding Off' and the buzzing, Hardfloor-esque, acidic heaviness of 'But I Return' by Nils Pot.
