Like their previous wax outings, SAD001 is a Various Artists offering and highly eclectic in style, ranging from DJ Dreamer's pacey, almost juke-ish house opener with its nostalgically rave-y female vocal, via Groove Selecta's deep and mellow 'Bamboo', to the more melodic stylings of Vantane's 'Hommage to John', synth-y Detroit-inspired techno from Daemian and WhoreHouse Sequences and the ruff 'n' raw breakbeat house of Kanyalang!'s 'Destroyer Of Worlds'. Always good to support new labels, so get involved!

Review: Amentec have done a great job in assembling this top level collection of new school breakbeat action, welcoming no less than 14 artists inside across 13 hard hitting creations. The exciting thing about the project is that it leaves no breaks-inspired stone unturned, featuring the likes of Sound Synthesis, Inkipak, DAWL, Flatliner and more. From the intense, arcade style arrangements of Sub Oscillator's 'Ketzer' remix from Difool, to the more abstract acidity of Bobo's bulging 'Club Proxima', we see such an exciting range on display. Our highlights therefore have to include both the classy club-ready bops of Ova Doce's 'Keep On', next to the cloud-lining euphoria of MOY's 'Jovian Sunrise'. A truly top quality collection.

Review: Volume 7 in the series but for once we can't really say "you should know what to expect by now" because what this compilation really goes to show is just what an eclectic and diverse camp the long-running Manchester label has become, with tracks on 'Paper Cuts #7' ranging from the near-ambient Balearica of Aniso Tropics' opener 'Apricot Memorex' to the self-explanatory synth-y stylings of La Guardia de la Luz's 'Trance Aleman de los 90s' via the uptempo strut of Jahn Solo's 'Disco'. So all we can really do is point you in the direction of some standout cuts, which for this reviewer would include D.S.D's luscious 'Just Can't Stop' and Benny Pitcher's 'Transatlantic Motion', which is like a little musical nod to the days when Paper comps were called 'Splinter'.

Review: Based in Italy, Micky More and Andy Tee's Groove Culture label have been flying the flag for soulful house, contemporary disco and disco-house since 2017. Now here comes a second compilation of Instrumental mixes from their illustrious back catalogue, which follows on the heels of Vol 1, released back in 2022. The label bosses themselves contribute three of the album's 20 tracks, with the likes of Ron Carroll, Kathy Brown, Mr A.L.I, Da Lukas and Dutchican Soul also featuring alongside a wealth of more underground names. Expect rolling beats, fat funk basslines, sweeping, surging strings and handclaps galore, with highlights for this reviewer including Martina Budde & Husky's organ-rollicking 'Open Up Your Mind', Dutchican Soul's 'You Bring Joy' and More & Tee's own 'So Wide Open'.

Review: Reel People Music's annual Soulful, Deep & Dope compilations always deliver exactly what the title promises, namely club-focused jams of the most positive, musically expansive and spiritually enriching kind. This year's edition is a particularly potent collection, with 20 tried-and-tested tracks to devour. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the tech-tinged deep house soulfulness of Mark Francis's remix of Opolopo and Angela Johnson's 'Stay This Way', and Glenn Underground's wonderfully musically expansive revision of Harold Matthews Jr and Sean McCabe's 'This Place', to the sunset-ready wonder of Matthew Brandy's 'Wish' (featuring an impeccable vocal performance by Josh Milan) and the soulful deep house brilliance of Atjazz and Shea Soul's inspired 'Home'.

Review: As Miami Winter Music Conference spins around for another year so does Toolroom's affiliated compilation showcasing why Mark Night's label remains at the precipice of mainstream club music. Bringing with it two full length DJ mixes and exclusive tracks from crew like Alex Kenji, Jerome Robins and Camila Jun, there's also banging numbers from legends like Green Velvet, Nicole Moudaber and Shadow Child next to Low Steppa and Tony Romera! ESSEL kicks off the compilation with the catchy choral loops of "The Edge", with other highlights to mention across some 50 tracks coming from Martin Ikin's drippin' "Make U Sweat", CASSIM's disco-tinged "Wanna Feel Something" and Carly Wilford's "The Dance". Time to dive into Miami 2024 - Toolroom style!

Review: There's a hint in the title here, as theBasement Discos serve up a collection of 20 house tracks with the ivories firmly front and centre. But while the old Joanna might be the thread that ties it all together, there's still plenty of variety on offer, from sprightly jazz-house workouts like AFAMoo's 'The Art Of Jazz' to deep house jams like A Naranjo's 'What Lies To Head' and Foot-Loose's 'Weekend'-biting disco-houser 'LA Piano Mood'. It's not all nostalgic homages to the hands-in-the-air anthems of the early 90s, in other words - though naturally there are plenty of those as well, with Piem's '4Real' one clear standout in that department. Of course, if you're not a fan of piano-based house, it's probably not the album for you... otherwise the 'Paradise' part of the title is entirely justified, nuff said!

Review: Forget the therapist, "GLBDOM Therapy 2" is the prescription you need for a sonic escape. This compilation on the GLBDOM label boasts eleven diverse tracks, each crafted by a different artist, yet united by a common thread of soulful house music. It's an odyssey through sound, weaving together 90s-inspired pumping beats with the deeper, introspective vibes of the early 2000s. Review: Shall Not Fade has reached the ripe old age of eight, a cause for celebration in these troubled times for artists and labels. To mark the occasion, the Bristol-based imprint has offered up this vast, 34-track compilation featuring new and unheard cuts from its ever-expanding family of artists. Naturally, it not only reflects Shall Not Fade's output, but also that of its various offshoots and series. So, there's plenty of high-grade deep house and immersive, breakbeat-driven deepness, but also surging, high-tempo rave-era nostalgia (see the tracks by TESTPRESS and Sheffield sorts Adelphi Music Factory), bassline (ABSOLUTE & HRSN), futurist techno (Marc Brauner), deep electro (Halo), hip-hop revivalism (Lydia Eisenbatter), progressive house and trance-influenced loveliness (MNL), and much more besides.

Review: Volume 14 in the series, so regular buyers should know what to expect by now. For the uninitiated through, the 'Playa D'en Bossa' series harks back to an earlier era of 'Balearic', before the term became synonymous with ethereal chill-out grooves, whale song and fluttering Spanish guitars, and when it referred instead to an electic, open-minded approach to programming DJ sets. Accordingly, the 23 tracks here range from house and nu-disco (see cuts from Dis-Connection, Alex Twitchy and Dr Basement) to trance and EDM (see, eg, Tom-E Project's 'Shine' or Little Madam's 'Yeah Uh Uh Ah'), much of it served with a distinct Europop twist, with Joma's 'Space Virus' and Nick Saley's 'Bengal' among the highlights.

Review: Sub-urban's popular annual compilation series returns for an eleventh time, bringing with it 12 more slabs of dancefloor-focused goodness with the label's usual intergalactic, tech-tinged twist. It begins with a gorgeous slab of spoken-word sporing melodic electro deepness (Guri, Elder and Life on Planets' superb 'The Rhythm of Life') and ends with the twinkling piano motifs, shuffling grooves, soulful vocals and rubbery electronic bass of Lee Wilson and Emi CA's 'Empty'; in between, you'll find a fine blend of locked-in tech-house bump (Discuji's 'Octavia'), bouncy and ever-rising Afro-tech ('Wili' by Roman Jack, with its' jammed-out organ motifs and glistening jazz guitar), the spacey, hands-aloft vocal house loveliness of Round Shapes Triangles, Guri & Elder's 'Forever Young' (as remixed by label founder Sebas Ramis), and the lolloping, mid-tempo swell of Discuji's 'Space Is The Place'.

Review: Remixes for days in the haus with Pre-Rolled Joints Vol 2: Remix Collection, Pt. 2 by Unknown To The Unknown. Kicking of with a sultry Kelis vibe in Ludwig A.F's remix of "Sweat It Out", other highlights include Hashman Deejay doing the business on a Ruf Dug number, Andras turning over some proto-techno on Bell Towers, with Shed going all time on UTTU boss man's "Bit Too Deep". Willie Burns drops a spooky remake of Max's D's legendary "High Life", next to some reliable Legowelt wares, a Roza Terenzi rework of Assembler Code and final dose of Fantastic Man who goes deep with a luscious mix of DJ Shark's "Closer".

Review: Riva Starr's label comes good with another fine split release. With a focus on minimal house, Volume 2 has enough range and diversity to keep even the most discerning DJ engaged. Sebastian Xottelo's "Trick Trick" integrates creaking percussion and crackling electronic riffs into its rolling rhythm. Chicago influences bubble to the surface on Fabio Ferro's "I Have Some". Led by an insistent groove and peppered with disco samples and organ stabs, it's redolent of classic DJ Sneak. And for those who like minimal with dubbed out influences, the walking bass and trippy vocals of Diego Cardarelli's "Organ Jordan" is the track of choice on this EP.

Review: Hot Gorilla Records, self-styled purveyors of "disco for funky monkeys", has enjoyed a very successful 2023 - as this timely round-up of the imprint's finest moments of the year emphatically proves. Check first the summery, party-starting disco-goes-house joy of Dexter Jones' 'Space Sister', before admiring the horn-heavy, edit-not-edit excellence of Andy Buchan's 'Shake What You Got' and the Brenda Taylor-sampling boogie-meets-nu-disco fusion of 'Lovers Boogie' by Solazz. Highlights elsewhere across the compilation include the 21st century disco-funk of Harlem Dance Club's 'Shake a Hand', the eyes-closed peak-time rush of Fray Bentos' 'No Lies', and the rolling, effects-laden hedonism of 'Feels So Good' by Pete Whitely.

Review: Given the title and the hefty track count here, you might be expecting a collection of 50 hastily thrown-together generic club "bangers" - but nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, Italian stalwart Ferreri has put together a truly excellent selection of house tracks that span from the very deepest, jazziest of grooves (see his own 'Jazz Imprint', for starters), to raw soul/disco strutters (Zove's 'Feeling', Soul Divide's 'Hanky Panky') to bump 'n' grind garage jams (Chemars' 'Deep At Night', to unashamed party starters like Filta Freqz' 'Dope Demand' and 'Da Hitman', which make free with big chunks lifted from classics by King Bee and Cutty Ranks/Eek-A-Mouse, respectively. Featuring scene faves like Johnick, Italobros and Jazzman Wax, this compilation is an absolute must.

Review: For the fifth volume in their ongoing compilation series showcasing 21st century Afro-house sounds, Get Physical Music has turned to rising star (and genuine starlet of African house culture) Thandi Draai. Her selections are naturally inspired and on-point, with a smattering of her tracks and remixes (see 'The Clique', a richly percussive and sun-soaked collaboration with Candy Man, Cuebur, DJ Clock and Kitty Amor, Bun Xapa's Afro-Tech take on her hook-up with DJ Beekay and fine collaborative remixes of tracks by Samin and Monkey Safari) being joined by personal favourites and lesser-known dancefloor treats. Highlights in the latter categories include TorQue MuziQ's constantly building deep Afro-tech take on Aero Mayelo's 'If Only', the driving excellence of Suffocate SA's 'Africa Get Physical' and Tribe of Afro's bouncy and brilliant 'Vubela'.

Review: It's that time of year when label compilations arrive by the truckload, but this Midnight Riot collection is definitely one that stands out from the herd, because it packs more bullets than a Gatling gun! Leading the charge for yours truly is Yam Who? & Rikky Disco's 'Set Me Free' with its romping house pianos, fat-ass b-line and absolute killer of a jazz-like female vocal, but not far behind come Da Lukas's 'Drop The Funk' (which bites Diana Brown & Barrie K Sharpe's early 90s classic 'The Masterplan'), Domino DB's gospel-infused soulful house anthem 'You Got The Love', The Love Doves' strutty 'Sistahood', Brian Lukas & Suki Soul's Inner City-nodding 'Back Together' and, well, you get the idea! A disco, nu-disco, disco-house and boogie delight.

Review: Borders Of Light is an Italian electro label that for years now has made a name for itself through its Year 000.000.001 volumes, which now reaches it fifth edition. While there might be some recognisable names here for those who know, each volume boasts a cast of new and intrepid talent - beginning with it Kevin Paul and his eerie opener "Driving Percs" that moves into the playful horror of Yare's "Monster". Further into the compilation you'll find some acid warehouse tunes in "Sensei" by LEONOR next to some progressive minimal synth from Rob Hes & Paralel via "Not Human" before moving into the techno plane crash that is Raffaele Marchitelli's "Confusion" and Mombaak's badass burner "Hoo". To infinity and beyond.

Review: As befits the Tronic label's catalogue, the latest edition of Rockets is a diverse dance floor affair. It includes the hypnotic, deep house of Sofian's "FAKIR", which sits alongside the tough, Sound Factory-influenced groove of That Kid Chris' "Where's The Love". On the techno front, the compilation also has a lot to offer. Agent Orange DJ's "It's Gonna Get" revolves around an intense, building rhythm that has parallels with Luke Slater's remix of Joey Beltram's "Fork Lift". Rods Franchin's "Experience" goes down a more percussive route, while the compilation reaches a dramatic conclusion on Lucas Aguilera's "Tranzicion". Led by hardcore-themed synth builds and devastating snare rolls, it makes for an intense finale.

Review: Dave Lee's annual 'Essentials' compilations consistently deliver on their promise by rounding up the Z Records' biggest dancefloor hits and overlooked gems from the previous 12 months. 2023's edition is, somewhat predictably, another must-have collection packed to the rafters with house and disco treats. There are plenty of genuine scene anthems present - see Dimitri From Paris's epic revision of Leonid and Friends' cover of Chicago's 'Street Player', Lee's stunning disco rework of Jamiroquai's 'Little L', and his epic AC Soul Symphony cut 'I Want To See You Dance' - as well as lesser-celebrated gems such as the disco-boogie shuffle of Dynasty's 'Still In Love', David Penn's driving rework of Raven Maize's 'The Real Life', and Grant Nelson's piano-powered revision of Lee and Omar's 'Starlight'.

Review: Following the release of Part 15 during the summer, Innervisions drop the latest secret weapons that feature in Dixon and Ame's sets. With a focus on vocals and woozy melodies, this collection captures the energy of the Innervisions owners' DJing. A case in point is the flowing groove and haunting tones of Ivory & Filippo Nardini's "Could You Feel The Love" or Hardt Antoine's woozy, acid-frazzled and appropriately named "Inside Your Mind". On other occasions, the collection veers close to pop territory, audible on the electronic groove of Cipy's "Trip" or flirts with 80s synth pop and electronic disco on Samantha Loveridge's "The Pusher". But no matter the direction, like all previous selections, Secret Weapons 16 makes for essential listening.

Review: The fifth instalment of this series is a reminder of the impact that KMS had on dance music . Right across the spectrum, Kevin Saunderson's releases shaped the future. A case in point is Esser'ay's "Forces", one of the KMS owner's many pseudonyms. The track's use of rumbling sub-bass and booming vocals proved influential in both garage and drum'n'bass - and it still sounds fresh. Part 5 features other similar landmark tracks. "Just Want Another Chance", a Saunderson project as Reese, retains its eerie, otherworldly sensibility despite the passage of over three decades. However, it's not all about looking to the past. The evergreen "Rock to the Beat" is remodelled here by Smith & Selway, setting it in a brooding, pulsating direction.

Review: The Disco Express's 'Best of the B-Sides' compilations are based on a simple premise, namely showcasing remixes and bonus cuts from the catalogue that you may have missed. There are naturally gems aplenty to be found scattered across the compilation, from the infectious Latin-disco percussion, warming Rhodes riffs and deliciously soulful vocals of John Morales' remix of Magnolia & Elliot Chapman's 'Deep Inside My Soul', and the dubby tropical disco shuffle of Tigerbalm's remix of Cliff Colada's 'Souffle Monday', to Young Pulse's hybrid disco-boogie take on Barbara Tucker and Sam Carlson's 'Miracles', and the revivalist disco-funk-goes-house flex of Generoco's 'The Express'.

Review: Local Talk's celebration of the '90s house-inspired corners of its now vast catalogue continues, with the much admired Swedish stable serving up 12 tidy tracks from a mixture of rising stars and scene stalwarts. It begins with the tactile, sunrise-ready wonder of Sean McCabe's '6AM Dub' of his own superb 'It's My Life', and ends with the densely layered, loop-powered disco-house rush of Circulation's 'The Return (1997 Mix)'; in between, you'll find an array of highlights including Dirtytwo's 'Moody' (an on-point Mood II Swing tribute), the deep, Italo-house style colour of Willie Graff and Tuccillo's 'Sunday Morning', the vintage Kerri Chandler-esque bump of Tom Noir's 'Feel Me' and the rolling warmth of Art of Tones' 'Dirty Stories'.

Review: "Nu Groove Edits, Vol 1" pays tribute to the iconic NYC record label that has enchanted music enthusiasts for generations. This release features a curated selection of tracks expertly reimagined by contemporary industry figures and celebrated curators, putting a well-deserved spotlight on the artists who shaped Nu Groove into a cherished and influential force within the music world. At the forefront of this compilation is Rheji Burrell, the champion of the quintessential New York house sound. Alongside his twin brother Rhano, the Burrell brothers played a pivotal role in shaping and defining the signature Nu Groove sound. Under various monikers, four of which are featured here, they left an indelible mark on the label and the house music scene at large. The journey begins with Bruise, aka Christian Campbell, an underground pioneer, taking on Burrell's 'Secret Code' released under his Jazz Documents alias. House'n Authority. Their reimagining of this legendary piece is a celebration of the past, present, and future, encapsulating the enduring legacy of Nu Groove.

Review: Just in time for ADE, Toolroom drops this comprehensive compilation. Fans of the long-running label will find much to love here. Good-time disco comes courtesy of KC Lights & Lapsley's infectious "Better Times" and Ejeca's joyous, sample-heavy "In & Out". The minimal end of the house spectrum is also well-served; there's the woozy break downs and builds of Martin Ikin's driving "Oscill8" and Essel's deconstructed rhythm on "Lennon". Amsterdam 2023 also serves up some irresistible, old-school selections. Pirate Copy's "Love Will Save the Day" is an intense, hardcore-sampling house track. Meanwhile on "I Just Wanna", Local Singles meld skipping garage beats with an urgent vocal and insistent siren riffs.

Review: Local Talk has always been good at offering up themed compilations showcasing different aspects of the label's output. The latest, as the title suggests, offers up some seriously good nuggets - mostly made in recent times - that draw huge inspiration from house music of the 1990s. There's much to admire throughout the 12 tracks on show, from the undulating TB-303 bass, sparkling piano motifs and glassy-eyed pads of Deymare's '1990' and Gerd's terrific 'Deep Mix' of Mateo & Matos's Masters at Work tribute 'Maw Basics', to the organ-rich roll of Terrence Parker's 'Unconditional' and the breakbeat-driven deep house funkiness of Kiko Navarro's 'Dope High'. Kyodai's 'Breaking (90s Dub)', a mid-90s NYC meets New Jersey style gem, and S3A's breathless 'Sleepness 909', are also superb.

Review: French label Citizens Of Vice, self-described purveyors of "Balearic, disco and house for those of a sleazy inclination", bring us a V/A EP whose six tracks defy easy categorisation. For house lovers, though, the best places to start would be Crooked Man's atmospheric 'Illyrian Song' and Lanowa's disco-infused 'Every Move I Make', while elsewhere, 'Sons Of Dub' is one for wonked-out 5am floors, Offshore & Coen explore nu-disco's leftfield fringes, 'Love Of My Life' from Staccatoman brings the 80s/Italo vibes while Mass Density Human's 'Henry's Theme' starts out in drifty Balearic territory then slowly builds into a thunderous percussion workout.

Review: The third volume in a series that sees Oli Lazarus's Papa Records taking a deep dive into their back catalogue and serving up a selection of gems built for sunshine and lazy days. Broken beat and soulful house from the mellower and jazzier side is the order of the day generally, and what's most remarkable is how fresh it all sounds given that many of these tracks are now over 20 years old. Nathan Haines' sublime and steppy 'Sound Travels' is the standout for this reviewer, but with the album packing tracks and remixes from scene stalwarts like DJ Spinna, Reel People, Domu, Modaji and Kaidi Tatham, it'll delight long-term fans of the style - and probably draw in some new ones that were still in nappies when these cuts first came out!

Review: Toy Tonics' self-explanatory 'Top Tracks' compilations are not only a great way of keeping track of what the label has been up to over the previous 12 months, but also a superb source of guaranteed floor-fillers and underground anthems.
