Having been picked up by Kerri Chandler for his Kaoz Theory imprint, Leo & Benson quickly followed up with hyped releases on Dirt Crew, Madhouse and Watergate Recordings. Starting off with the slamming tribal tech house groove "Witchdoctor", while the slinky yet jacking acid house of "Music Box" equally impresses. On remix they have Fuse resident and Moscow Records founder Archie Hamilton, who shows just why there is so much attention on him at the moment. Review: Jazzy Soup makers Apparel Music begin 2017 in fine fashion, celebrating their sixth birthday with another typically swinging collection of dusty, jazz-fuelled deep house workouts. There's naturally plenty to get the juices flowing, from the hazy trumpets, rubbery double bass and snappy beats of Voyeur's "Swingin' For Theo", to the rich, evocative and luscious, broken beat era jazz-funk of Kerem Akdag's killer closer, "Friend". In between, you'll find the spaced-out, bongo-laden house hypnotism of Kisk's "Just U", and the pitched-up deep house soul of "je Suis Reconnaissant", a collaborative affair co-produced by Ivano Tetelepta and Eugene Latumeten.

Review: Kerri Chandler has long been an enthusiastic supporter of Benson Herbert and Leo Pickings' Voyeur project. He's already put out their singles on Madtech and Madhouse, and here brings them to his newest label, Kaoz Theory, in order to release their debut album. It's a pleasingly varied and assured set, too, moving from string-drenched, cinematic moods, to shuffling, atmosphere-rich tech-house, via African influenced tribal workouts, woozy downtempo hip-hop instrumentals, and dreamy, jammed-out deep house. Despite this eclecticism, it hangs together impressively thanks to Herbert and Pickings' assured use of mood and melody. File under: quietly impressive.
