Review: Waeys returns to Critical with four more steaming rave jams. 'Raw Flavour' says it all; a blistering head-rearranger with a rasping bassline and flips into springy breakbeat it's the perfect combo between the rougher UK style and the more cosmic European licks. Deeper into the EP we're immersed in a sea of powerful Waeys flavoured contrast as SOLAH joins the mix with the lush jazzy title track '10,000', 'B.B' goes full grizzly roller mode and P4VAN joins in on 'Vision' for a heavyweight dubstep finale. 10,000 reasons to be happy.
Review: Waeys to go bro, there's some delightful reworkery going on here as Overview take us back to one of Casper Waeys' breakthrough bubblers 'Objection'. First up is his own VIP which takes the craftily minimal original and gives it a good old course of steroids. Beefy but still lean, you can basically hear Waeys development as a producer in its dynamics and weight. Then comes the already massive remix from Simula who gives it his signature aggy grizzle. Dark and deadly, there's no overruling this one.
Review: Is it a small album? Is it a big EP? Who cares? It's Waeys doing bits on Critical Music with his most substantial and explorative body of work so far. Already preceded by big soulful singles like 'Set The Vibe' (with the inimitable flowanastasia) and 'Nothing' (with the equally brilliant Patch Edison) now comes the full showdown as the Dutch don delivers some of his best work to date... The jazzy introspection of 'Familiar Face', the dusty hip-hop feels of 'Five After' and the slower tempo of 'Your Eyes' are just some of the highlights here. What an exceptional release. Big love to Waeys.
Review: Celebrating two decades deep in the game, Critical Music deliver this exceptional 22 track collection from some of the most innovative artists in the bass field. From old label mates such as Sam Binga, Mefjus and Ivy Lab to exciting newcomer talents like Spectral, Able and Cauzer, the entire collection is a blistering jolt of futurism that ranges the full Critical spectrum. Highlights range from the introspective tones of Buunshin's 'Forget About Me' to the dark, tense minimalism of Calibre's 'Verstat' by way of the barbed soul of Halogenix's 'IDGAF'. Here's to another 20 years...
Review: Few artists have made as big an impact as Waeys in their first year of getting down to business, and his taking home of Best Newcomer at last year's awards shows just how successful he's been. He's on Critical these days, Snoar is his first full length solo EP on the label and oh boy, what a debut. 'Snoar' is Waeys as we've come to love him; jagged edged jump up textures delicately blended in with furious minimal pace, a hybrid club banger with which says all the right things. The other three tracks are all features, and its 'Rave Tool' featuring the badman Particle that really stands out, with a loping main bass of monstrous weight and width, a deeply satisfying element that ties the whole tune together in true style. Unreal from the young talent.
Review: Overview are without a doubt one of the biggest success stories of recent years and 2020 has proved to be their biggest yet, with a slew of fantastic releases across their roster of artists. Pretty much that entire crew is represented here and the tracks cover their 2 year history, from early tunes like breakout hit 'Around Me' to brand spanking new cuts like 'Framed' by Klinical and Waeys. Waeys has been an important part of the Overview story and his tune 'Who You Are' with Hadley was one of the first steps in that journey, a ridiculously dirty techy roller with an infectious bounce and a progression that will certainly get your gurn on. A spectacular album.
Review: By far one of the most exciting new artists to emerge in drum & bass in recent years, everything Waeys has put out into the world (including his magnificent moustache) has been high grade material. This new Critical EP being his highest benchmark so far. 'Ephemeral' says it all; crystal synth business, with strong touches of trance, there's a barbed soul to this that's on such a level of drama and theatre it's almost classical. Every other track hits with the same unique vibe and quirky soul; 'The Tune' has a playful almost jump-up infectiousness to its riff, 'Mist' is a beautifully slinky synth number with essences of techno while a killer collaboration with Was A Be concludes affairs. What an absolute killer EP.
Review: One of the several young talents that have been inculcated by Overview Music, Waeys is a Dutch producer who moved over from the world of halftime and beats to drum & bass and bloody hell, is he good at it. Objection is a blend of jumpy, foghorn sounds with tighter, more minimal tones and it's a combination he has apparently mastered. There are jumpy dance inclinations on the title tune and 'Ultimatum', whilst 'Mapper' takes a foreboding but simple bassline and intersperses it with tugs and pulls of foghorn wizardry. The overall result is club-friendly, superbly well engineered and incredibly moreish. More to come, we hope.
Review: Premiership D&B deepsmiths Delta9 hit the streets once again for another immense VA collection. All chiselled from new-gen coal face, all devilishly dark and stripped-back in nature, tracks come from the likes of Waeys, Screamarts, Askel & Elere, Sl8r, Nemy and many more key names-to-watch who are showing all the right sings of donning things in the very near future. Highlights across the 25 track collection include the waspy stabs and elastic bassline of Nemy's "Distracting", the bulldozer groove of RMS's "Mikro", the faraway soul and epic atmospheres of Glyph's "Across Hidden Dimension" to name but a few...
Review: Delta9 Recordings is one of the standout smaller labels of the last 18 months or so, with a string of releases that showcase just how much the scene is flourishing in terms of up and comers. Waeys had his first drum & bass release on Overview last year, and 'Vesta' shows off just how good this young producer is. The title track is the highlight, a stabby, superbly well put together roller that blends a panopoly of harsh sounds together into a formidable piece of dancefloor drum & bass. His remix of 'Deadline' by Krispy is also fantastic - this isn't a release to miss.
Review: The newly minted Overview Music is on an absolute roll at the moment, having released a string of bangers by Klinical and others. This time it's the turn of Waeys, another brand-new producer scouted by the king of A&R that is Overview head honcho Peter Maxted and blimey, we can see why they've roped him in. 'Ropple' is our favourite of the bunch, with an eerie landscape of basses and synths that subtly come together to form a minimal roller with precise levels of force and direction. 'Pressure' is the other highlight, with a sweeping back end of futuristic proportions - shouts to Skantia for the remix as well.
