Review: Contemporary jazz label outta the UK, First Word, brings us a compilation highlighting a select group of artists, groups and collaborations the label has works with and supports, taking in broken beat, hip hop, jazz and R&B to spoken word and soul. Highlights from its UK roster include tracks by Darkhouse Family, Kaidi Tatham and Sarah Williams White to a streak of US artists in 14KT (and that Tall Black Guy remix) to Muhsinah, Stro Elliot & James Poyser. Special mentions go to Melbourne songstress Allysha Joy, New Zealand jazz drummer Myele Manzanza and Japanese trumpeter Takuya Kuroda! French act Souleance turn out some playful latin breaks in "Mont Maudit" with some classy disco coming outta Don Leisure's "Egg Yolk Bun". Full flavoured First Word selections.

Review: Tom A. Leah, AKA Werkha, should need no introduction to broken beat and nu-jazz lovers by now: the likes of Gilles Peterson and Mr Scruff are regular supporters and he's toured with Bonobo and Chet Faker. This eclectic EP ranges from the wigged-out broken beat of 'Generation X' to the smooth disco-lounge of 'Favourite Corner', via the funk-hop of 'The Key', the cinematic leftfield jazz vibes of 'Swing Thru' and the neo-soul/future R&B of the female-vocalled 'In Sunny G', and as such neatly demonstrates the Glasgow-based Mancunian's stubborn refusal to fit neatly into any one musical box.

Review: Werkha is a Glaswegian fellow in Manchester. His seventh release comes courtesy of Brighton's Tru Thoughts. Comprising of four dark and disquiet tracks with an experimental groove. Starting out with the soulful urban blues of "So London", "Foolin' Self" picks up the pace a bit with some Bugz In The Attic style broken beat plus Berry Blacc's incredible talent on the mic. Finally "Glass Games" features the sultry vocals of Bryony Jarman on this irresistible hip-hop styled beat. The EP builds on the success of the "We Communicate EP", which gained heavy radio play from Gilles Peterson, Gideon Coe, Don Letts and Julie Adenuga, to name but a few. Criticising corrupt systems, the EP works towards giving something back to the people; to all the hands that run the machine that is our society.

Review: Manchester's Werkha first came to prominence when one of his tracks was discovered by Gilles Peterson no less! Things went pretty quickly after that and before we knew it, we had the hefty Colours Of A Red Brick Raft debut LP to contend with. Now he's back with the much anticipated We Communicate EP, which demonstrates a huge leap forward in terms of maturity and influence. There are three main jams here - the scattershot jazz beats, meandering bass and soothing vocals (by Bryony Jarman-Pinto) of "Shakedown Radio", the warm, off-kilter clubbiness of "4 String Flip" and the playful electro-boogie of "Paisley Rd Yes".

Review: Werkha's LP, Colours Of A Red Brick Raft, firmly put this Glaswegian producer on the map and now album track "City Shuffle" follows as a single. Boasting soulful breathy vocals by Bryony Jarman Pinto, the song features delicate jazzy guitar and gentle Sunday afternoon beats. Elsewhere General Judd remixes the tune into some pretty fine deep and techy house, Scratcha DVA turns "The Invincible" into a virtually beatless dubby menace, Tom Blip gives "Falling Through The Wall" a warm and sunkissed makeover and Contours wrap things up nicely with the nuanced percussion and soft piano chords on "A Revolution Blue".

Review: Werkha is a rising talent championed by like-minded fledgling label Cool Kid Music. In keeping with the label's aesthetic, Werkha has delivered a three track EP that fuses neo soul, sparse garage beats and lots and lots of synths. "Cube & Puzzle" starts all hazy before launching into Bowski-style stripped back garage. "Le Roitelet" is a bizarre mix of fuzzy digital soul and jazzy French female vocals. "Bottle Trick" keeps the jazz, this time guitar, and marries it to slo-mo beats and layered vocal loops.
