Review: We are here gifted one hell of a selection as we are welcomed in to view the second edition of 'Of Paradise', a VA compilation showcasing some of the best new breakbeat and techy sounds out there right about now. Overall, the compilation is a solid mix and blend of genre types, from the smooth melodic chord bounces of Will Lister's 'Sky Stepping' all the way around to the more moogish, 80's synth-inspired switches of Low Tape's 'Blue Noise'. Other heaters include the super percussive 'Ingenue' from Eluize, along with the well rounded kick pulses of Dwell's 'Warped'. Vibrant stuff!
Review: An alumnus of labels including Permanent Vacation and All City Records, Irish producer New Jackson returns to Fort Romeau's Cin Cin stable in the company of fellow label regular Will Lister, and between them they've come up with a very varied four-tracker. Opener 'Glass Stabs' is garage-y and organ-led, but 'Moonfeel', which follows, is an altogether synthier affair with a wonked-out, experimental feel. 'Disruption' shares much of its sound palette with the latter but has a more euphoric, blissed-out-in-Ibiza kinda vibe, while finally 'Windblown' starts out in slo-mo territory but then breaks out frenetic drum machine beats and lashings of bubblin' acid.
Review: The sixteenth release from Phonica Records' offshoot label comes from occasional shop worker Will Lister. As debuts go, the Phantom EP is very impressive. Packed with fluid, rising and falling synth lines, rich deepness, jazz-flecked drums and rush-inducing electronics, all three tracks sound like they were inspired - in part, at least - by Floating Points' early house records on Eglo. This is particularly noticeable on the slowly building closer, "Agency", where jammed-out synth lines are smartly used to increase energy levels throughout. The EP's best moment, though, is undoubtedly the title track, which ranks among the most gleefully positive and well-produced debut tracks we've heard all year.
