Critical Music shutdown their 20th anniversary sonic shenanigans with this humungous remix collection that features pretty much every respected and hugely talented artist Kasra's label has ever worked with. 23 cuts fresh for 2023, every single track is guaranteed to slap and tickle and dancefloor right the way through to summer, especially the likes of Foreign Concept's synth-twisting take on 'AYO', Particle's contemporary jungle take on 'Grave', Buunshin's emotional take on 'Sane' and Hyroglifics' deep and smouldering take on 'Wingwalker'. All this and so much more, this is why Critical Music are at the top of the game right now. Exemplary.

Review: Wrapping up a serious year of heat, Hype's Playaz look back over their many releases of 2021 and brings them altogether in one place for those who missed out on the label's many big bruisers, bumpers and thumpers. Ranging from Xtrah's trippy, leftfield 'Droplets' to straight-up face-melters like Spaow's 'Amd Planet' with a whole range of fire in between from some of the label's (and the scene's) biggest and most respected names like Taxman, Voltage, Limited, Dunk and of course the mighty DJ Hazard, it's a pretty forthright reminder of just how much clout and musical muscle the longstanding label has - even when half the year was spent with the clubs and raves closed. Playaz ain't playing around!

Review: Well well well... What a way to kick off a new year: Modified Sonics sees the entire Critical troop go to town on each other's work and celebrate the label's 15+ year contribution to the game. No stone unturned, no shoe unthrown; from long-demanded VIPs such as Emperor's sharp update on "Infrasound" and Mefjus's VIP of "Disrupted" come well-deserved re-ups of classics such as Binga's fuzzy take on Serum & Bladerunner's "Who Jah Bless", Benny L's gut-troubling twist of Enei's "Mosquito" and a crucial twist of Rockwell's breakthrough gamechanger "Underpass" from none other than Perez. With loads more dopeness from the likes of QZB, Hyroglifics, Klax and many more, this is one of the best V/A albums Critical have ever put together. Essential.

Review: It's been a while since Xtrah last treated us to a Cyberfunk bounty but boy has he made up for lost time with this all-star cast. Phace, Ulterior Motive, Stealth and the X man himself are all in one the action as they demolish and rebuild label smashes from the past. Phace adds a little space funk tech wiggle to Xtrah & Mefjus's supercharged "Fever", Ulterior Motive strip back Simple Technique's "Cold Steppin" to its rumbling, pranged out bare bones, Xtrah tears Phentix and Signal with a rising technoid twist while Stealth takes "Operator" to some strange dark-funk places. Serious remix business.

Review: What a crazy trip it's been so far for Xtrah's Cyberfunk imprint. Championing both blisteringly fresh talent (Incognito, Simple Technique, Phentix) and pioneers (Mefjus, Current Value) at a commendable unhurried pace, and hosting some legendary parties along the way, they now unlock album warrior mode with this sterling document of furious futurism. Showcasing not only Cyberfunk's ear for forefront compositions but drum & bass's current rude health the entire album is soaking in innovation. Highlights include the detailed percussion and walloping subs of Sub Marine's "Club Mate", Phentix's grizzly cyber-neuro "Complex System", Simple Technique's thundering halftime robot hip-hop stampede "Gorilla" and Xtrah's seasick flabby bass textures on "Nachtmuzik". Review: Few producers enjoy the exalted position that Current Value does. And since he's moved back from his hectic crossbreed creations to more traditional tech drum & bass sounds, you can really hear the detail in every element. Xtrah is a man of similar frequency obsession, making this Cyberfunk release a really natural and honest project. Highlights include the cymbal-splashing twist on the triplet arrangement ("Escape") and the insane blocky snare funk on the total sci-fi freak out "Matchfit". With all other tech territories explored in between, one could easily argue this to be Cyberfunk's best release so far.
