Eighty One
Review: The alias of Californian Joe Corrales, Yppah's third album for Ninja Tune sees the producer build on his mix of psychedelic soul and rock with a more electronica-orientated sound on Eighty One. The lush waves of shoegazey organs on opener "Blue Schwinn" set the tone nicely, with similarly dense songs like "Happy To See You" and "Paper Knife" providing a pleasing link between rock and the detuned haziness of artists like Balam Acab and Evian Christ.

Film Burn
Review: Joe Corrales Jr's Yppah alias returns for this, the first taste of his forthcoming third album Eighty One. Released on Ninja Tune, and joined by singer and violinist Anomie Belle, "Film Burn" is a swirling, slightly shoegazed mix of stuttering live drums and thick, gothy bass. Warp's ever-popular Kwes contributes a hazy and urgent remix that pitches the vocal down to gender-blurring levels and adds some deliberately lo-fi textures, while another Yppah newie -- "Her Star Won't Shine' -flips things up for a blitzed indie charge, in the vein of Slowdive or MBV.
