Review: Roam Recordings' periodic compilation series returns after a year off in 2021. As with previous editions, main man Jason Peters has put together a fine selection of back catalogue gems, lesser-known remixes and obscurities from the vaults. It's a fine snapshot of the San Francisco-based imprint's uniquely psychedelic, cosmic and heavily electronic sound, with highlights including the clap-heavy, mind-mangling hypno-throb of Freudenthal and Jake The Rapper's '1982 (Darlyn Vlys remix)', Endrik Schroeder's Patrick Cowley-inspired revision of 'Brothers' by Back To The Wave, the acidic electro-disco breathlessness of Vongold's 'Pleasure Cinema' and Cardopusher's new beat-meets-EBM style revision of Tronik Youth's Fairlight-sporting 'Number Wang'.

Review: Over the last few years, Zakmina has quietly gone about building up an impressive catalogue, with contributions to releases from Futureboogie Recordings, Nein, Bordello a Pargigi and Correspondant [sic] only enhancing his reputation. Here the young Lithuanian producer returns to Roam Recordings with a predictably rock-solid EP. There are two Zakmina originals to choose from: the atmospheric, bleeping, occasionally intergalactic dark Italo-disco shimmer of 'Mondo' and the more muscular, star-fall electro-disco of 'Sunshine in the Rain'. REES remixes 'Mondo', opting to smother sparkling electronic melodies and bustling beats in razor-sharp TB-303 acid lines, while DC Salas re-frames 'Sushine In The Rain' as a revivalist Miami freestyle throb-job with added peak-time Italo muscularity.

Review: If you're a fan of music that pushes boundaries and producers that aren't afraid to take risks, then the five rulebook ripper-uppers here should be right up your alley. Opening with two minutes of sampled speech before introducing a Chems-like backbeat, Shkema's 'Emotions' sets the tone - thereafter we're treated to the playa house-rock/indie fusion vibes of Zakmina & EGOMASINA's 'Dykuma' and Deserted Island's 'Georgian Dumplings', plus Shkema's 'Vaiku Ligonine' - think Larry Heard and The Clangers take a trip in Algiers - and the breaksy, leftfield funk of Bojarchuk's 'Force'. Interesting stuff that'll delight the more adventurous jocks.

Review: A year or so back, the hinterland between Italo and prog was one of the busiest regions on the entire dance music map; lately the deluge of surging synths seems to have slowed down somewhat, but if that for you was a golden age then fear not because this EP from Bordello A Parigi, which packs four tracks from as many artists, should cater for your requirements nicely! Pete Beluga & Du Chatinier's 'Only Shine At Night' is the standout for yours truly, thanks to its authentically new wave-y kinda feel, while Some Chemistry's 'Euro Connector' gives things a slightly housier twist.

Review: Roam Recordings was set up by Jason 'JP Soul' Peters and Jeni 'Jeniluv' Erickson in 2001, and has since put out records by the likes of Demarkus Lewis, Rhythm Plate, Hesohi and Dino Lenny. For their 100th release/20th anniversary, though, they've avoided the obvious 'best of' route and instead serve up 21 brand new tracks coming from a mix of familiar names (Emperor Machine, DJ Rocca, Tronik Youth) and newcomers. The overall vibe leans towards cosmic and Italo disco, but that's a very broad-brush picture - there are tracks here that could, variously, be filed equally well under house, techno, electro, Balearica or prog. Psychedelic electronic disco at its best.

Review: A round of applause for Dave Harvey's Futureboogie label, which is closing its doors after a decade in which it's releases got stronger and more varied year on year. This superb compilation acts as the imprint's final testament, offering no less than 20 previously unheard nuggets from the Bristol-based imprint's nearest and dearest. Given the wealth of high-grade material on show, singling out highlights is tough, but our current favourites include the echoing,'80s alternative pop-meets-proto house dubbiness of Tech Support's 'Writers Block', the alien synths, glassy-eyed stabs and bustling electro drums of Warehouse Preservation Society's 'Ron's House', the kaleidoscopic house psychedelia of Manami's 'Nacros.Is', the bleeping, drug-fuelled oddness of Chez De Milo's 'Need Someone' and the breakbeat-acid insanity of Hard Ton's 'Don't Believe The Hype'.

Review: Sometime Roam Recordings and Nein artist Zakmina has been rather quiet of late, so this outing on Bristol's increasingly assured Futureboogie Recordings label is long overdue. Titke track 'Church of Madness' is pleasingly psychedelic and mind-altering, with the publicity-shy producer layering trippy acid lines, ghostly chords and wayward electronic motifs atop a chugging, Moroder style bassline and early '80s machine drums. On his accompanying 'Ezoteric Breakdance Remix', Hungarian producer Gnork re-imagines the track as a melancholic chunk of eccentric dancefloor electro. Elsewhere, 'D?j? vu' is a foreboding, strobe-lit acid chugger capable of inducing hallucinations, while 'Running Amore' is a hedonistic, timbales-sporting late-night throb-job.

Review: For the next installment on their Sulk Magic imprint, Bird Of Paradise and Force Majeure present ascendant producer Zakmina, who has previously impressed on like minded labels such as Roam Recordings and Nein. The Lithuanian artist seves up three retrofitted originals on the Introduction EP: from the infectious nu-disco energy of the title track, the neon-lit synthpop of "Introduction 2" and the gritty Italo/electro noir of "Till Death Do Us Part" (original mix) perfect for getting those brooding vibes happening late at night. There are some terrific remixes featured too, courtesy of label boss Bird Of Paradise on his Rogue Piano mix of the latter, and Mexico's Colossio going for a lo-slung and kosmische rendition on "Introduction".

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Toolroom's "Poolside Ibiza" compilation strand, namely groovy nu-disco, house and laidback Balearic beats inspired by afternoons spent lounging by the water in stonking White Isle heat. Naturally, there are plenty of gems to be found amongst the 40 unmixed tunes selected by chosen DJs Moullinex and Xinobi, from their own collaborative post-punk/dub number "X Marks The Spot", to the slick '80s synth-pop dreaminess of Tensnake's fine remix of Xinobi's "Far Away Place" and the drowsy, Morricone-influenced soundscape weirdness of Simple Symmetry's remix of Moscoman's "I Ran". Throw in some seriously good cuts from Felipe Gordon, Donald Dust, Pin Up Club and Meera (whose carnival-ready boogie jam "Fine Without You" stands out), and you have a fine collection of summery cuts.

Review: Amsterdam/Geneva based Nightnoise are back with Zakmina. The Cosmic Polo EP features two new tracks from the emerging Lithuanian producer, who has most recently been heard on Berlin's Nein Records. The title track is a sexy Italo disco influenced number, that gets an adrenalised injection via its soaring 303 acid leads. The second track, "Come Here Vladim" is a saucy/neon-lit nu-disco number. Additional remixes come from K-Effect and The Soviet Union, who both provide brooding EBM renditions of the respective tracks - both will surely bring out the inner goth in you!

Review: Nein is keeping tight-lipped about this EP, offering no information whatsoever about debutant producer (or producers) Zakmina. Musically, though, there's plenty to enjoy, from the ricocheting, manipulated vocal samples, druggy electronics and pitched-down EBM drums of "Drama", to the foreboding dancefloor throb of "Narnia", where buzz saw guitar riffs and paranoid synth riffs rise above a pulsating backing track. Swiss sorts In Flagranti re-imagine "Drama" as a lolloping chunk of punk-funk electro complete with live drums, while Man2.0 successfully pitches down "Narnia" whilst retaining the inherent paranoid creepiness of Zakmina's fantastic original version.
