Review: Strapontin and Zillas On Acid enjoyed collaborating on their 2021 EP 'Acid Straps' so much, that they decided to keep recording music together - despite one living in Belgium and the other in Philedelphia. Their second joint missive for Optimo Digital Danceforce - a label they've also appeared on as solo artists - is every bit as alluring as their first, with opener 'Dial Up', a pleasingly psychedelic excursion rich in jacking drums, wayward TB-303 lines, doomy bass and sweat-soaked rap samples, setting the tone. They opt for a darker and even more mind-mangling tone on 'Reading Comments', where clandestine, effects-laden guitar licks and trippy electronics rise above a low-slung post-punk bassline, before getting hypnotic on the ghostly and sub-heavy 'Another Job'. Shroom-powered acid throb-job 'In Your Mind' completes a fine package.

Review: Zillas On Acid - the US duo of Thomas Roland and James Weissinger - come to Argentina's Playground with an EP that fuses house, techno, disco and prog into a series of dark and glorious dancefloor concoctions. 'Sticker Shock' itself is a moody, unhurried chugger in its Original form before being given a pared-back remix by Tolouse Low Trax, while 'Paper Party' starts out on the techno/prog cusp before getting a heavyweight acid rerub from Martin Noise & DELLA. 'Wake In Fright', meanwhile, has a Guerrilla-ish, early prog kinda feel, though the standout for yours truly is the lumbering, lugubrious 'Cracked Fish Tank' - it's what headfried 4am floors were made for!

Review: Some 15 years after Benjamin Frolich and Tom Bioly launched their Permanent Vacation label with a fine compilation of the same name, the Munich-based pair return with a seventh showcase of treats from the imprint's now sizable roster of artists. As you'd expect, it's an eclectic and uniformly high-quality affair, with the 22 included cuts touching on everything from cheeky electro covers of Chris Rea (DMX Krew's rather good take on 'On The Beach'), deep nu-disco (the star-fall synths and Italo-disco bass of Kendal's Basorexia') and sun-soaked, 80s synth-pop-meets-dream house bliss ('Digital Joy' by Rees), to sleazy slow acid ('Lose Your Soul' by Zilas on Acid), late-night proto-house revivalism (Felice's 'Just Passing By') and rushing, breakbeat-driven dancefloor dreaminess (Dharma's 'The Epiphany'). In a word: excellent.

Review: A four-tracker here that will suit those whose dancefloor tastes lean towards the exotic and eclectic side. Red Axes' 'Maztomeret' tops a Moog-y cosmic disco groove with a nursery-like "la la la la la" chorus, Zillas On Acid comes on like 70s Indian sitar funk given a Solomun remix, Tyu flirts with African and Arabic flavours on 'Kongaloka' and then finally there's the oddity that is Manfredas's 'Meshugas', a quirky slice of Balearica with a hint of The Clangers about it. Peaktime tackle for big, glitzy clubs this most definitely is not, but leftfield spinners would do well to check it out.
