Review: The term "Balearic" originally referred to an eclectic mix of styles rather than a genre in its own right, and that's exactly what you get on this new EP from Music For Dreams regular Islandman, AKA Istanbul-based Tolga Boyuk. 'Sunshine' is a blissed-out synth-athon that gets more and more intense as it goes on, while 'Simple Man' is a tribal-infused bass bubbler with psychedelic overtones. Both of those two come with matching Extended Mixes, while the EP's completed by a couple of more contemplative cuts, the hazy, acoustic drifter 'Kalpler' and the dreamy, jazz-fusion tinged 'Hemsin'.
Review: Turkish producer Tolga Boyuk aka Islandman released his brilliant Agit EP almost two years ago, but it's still worthy of some remixes so here we are. In fact, he releases two remix packs of the EP, with this first one seeing great remixes by Berlin's M.Rux (HHV/YNFND) who delivers a drifting and balearic version of the title track, while fellow Istanbul producer Anatolian Sessions (Art Vibes/Ready Mix) certainly delivers the standout here - with his emotive and ethereal deep house perspective. For those of you who did not check out his Rest In Space LP which came out on the label last year, it was terrific - do yourself a favour and check it out now!
Review: Those who dig around Bandcamp for inspiration may have come across Islandman, a Turkish producer and multi-instrumentalist dedicated to jaunty Balearic fusions of summery styles and sounds. Rest In Space marks his first release for an established label - Kenneth Bager's fine Music For Dreams imprint - and offers the perfect introduction to his seductive sonic world. The ten instrumental cuts included are colourful and attractive, with the Istanbul native wrapping jazzy guitar solos, whistling synthesizer melodies and Persian melodies around a variety of gentle, sun-soaked grooves. There are occasional nods towards drowsy new age ambience, dub and Pat Metheny style jazz-funk fusion, but for the most part it's a sparkling and humid affair.
Review: Chillout hero, Kenneth Bager (aka Dr. Baker & The Kenneth Bager Experience) is a man on a mission - running his Music For Dreams label and forever searching for, and releasing, the finest downtempo beats on the international Balearic scene. His Sunset Sessions series is hugely popular, and here we have the fifth instalment. Highlights of the 28 tracks(!) featured include the quirky synth pop of "Thank You Wally" by Ruf Dog, the deep acoustic tech of "Night Wind" by Islandman and the sunkissed 80s disco vibes of "So Elvissa (RunSQ mix)" by Blank & Jones feat Mike Francis.
